    1. JOHN VARDELL documents
    2. I have a Vardell that married into one of my Bowman/Brown lines from Rutherford Co, Tn. I may have the documents you found already, on a John Vardell who died 1815, widow Mary.Below is a little of what I've gathered on them. Joyce Terrana, Burleson, Tx The Vardells were in Rutherford Co as early as 1815 when John Vardell died leaving widow Mary. By 1820, there were 3 Vardell heads of house: Mary, Sarah and Thomas. More research needs to be done of this era. It is likely that the John Vardell who died 1815 was probably the same as the John Vardell who served with Thomas Vardell in S. C., during Rev War 1781-1782. This has not been proven however. Two of my Brown sisters married 2 Bowman brothers in the 1830s in Rutherford Co. The girls were: Mary and Jane Brown. Another of their sisters was Margaret who married a Vardell as follows: Margaret Brown b ca 1802-1806 S. C. Married ca? 1832 (cant find marriage) to John T. Vardell (b ca 1801). She was almost certainly his 2nd wife. Margaret Brown Vardell was described as a "femme sole" in 1855 documents of her father's estate By 1850 she lived in Rutherford Co, in the Youree dist with her 3 children and in the home of her parents. Nearby was John T. Vardell, shoemaker also living alone. Whenever they parted, it must have occured after birth of their last child in 1843 and prior to 1850. By 1860 she was in Bushnell Creek/Murfreesboro dist with real estate valued $200 with her daughter Martha and grandchildren. John T. Vardell enlisted from Rutherford Co, in Confederacy at age 60, in 1861, in Co H, 18th Tn Inf. but only served a few months, documented by his Compiled Service Record. (released after a few months surely due to age). Most of the men in this outfit came from extreme eastern part of Rutherford Co, near Readyville. It is thought that John T. Vardell married twice more in Rutherford Co, (1858 and 1872) but only had children by his first 2 wives….likely had additional wives. John T. Vardell born ca 1801 married first 1817 to Rebecca Cook, 2nd ca 1832 to Margaret Brown (d/o Robert and Eliz Brown). It is likely that he married 3rd in 1858 to Catherine Elliott, and 4th in 1872 to Mrs Martha Marshall. There was another marriage in 1880 to Martha Shipp. I am not sure that the last 2 or 3 marriages were by the same John T., even tho ALL were listed as 'John T. Vardell'. Found him in 1830, 1840 and 1850 census. In 1850 he lived alone in Youree Dist, occupation shoemaker. His age was slightly off (53) and birthplace listed as Tenn. Nearby was his (probably 2nd wife, Margaret Brown Vardell) and 3 of her children, all living with her parents. Need to find him in census of 1860, 1870 and 1880 if he lived that long. Also need to find each of his sons in every census. His first 3 boys and a girl (Margaret J. b 1830) were by his first wife Rebecca Cook, the remainder by Margaret Brown. I have the known children of John T. Vardell by 2 of his wives 1817-1872, some Vardell Rutherford Co, Tenn. marriages Margaret Brown probably married John T. Vardell ca 1832 but can't find this marriage. 25 Jan 1817 JOHN T. VARDELL/Rebecca Cook, by James Whitsett, J. P.,surety Uriah Nixon 13 Feb 1820 Thomas Vardell/Sarah Fnch by L. Davis J. 1. Isaac Whitworth on 1810 census, Rutherford County, Tennessee
    2. Steve Carson
    3. Does anyone have any additional information about the Isaac Whitworth who is listed in the 1810 census of Rutherford County, Tennessee? The data for his family is on handwritten page 32, printed page 17, line 6 Isaac Whitworth 3100121110-0-0 This expands to: Males: In census under 10 3 (b. 1800-1810) 10-16 1 (b. 1794-1800) 16-26 0 (b. 1784-1794) 26-45 0 (b. 1765-1784) 45 and over 1 (b. bef. 1765) Females: under 10 2 (b. 1800-1810) 10-16 1 (b. 1794-1800) 16-26 1 (b. 1784-1794) 26-45 1 (b.1765-1784) 45 and over 0 (b.bef. 1765) Total: 10 number of other free persons except Indians not taxed 0 number of slaves 0 Based on knowing where some of his census neighbors lived, I think this Isaac Whitworth lived in the far SE corner of Rutherford County very near the ridge line that divides Rutherford from Bedford County. I don't see an Isaac Whitworth in the 1820 census of Tennessee in any county, but in 1830 I find an Isaac Whitworth in the far NE corner of Bedford County, TN, page 113, line number 3: 0100000100000-0100110100000 This expands to: Males: under 5 0 (b. 1825-1830) 5-10 1 (b. 1820-1825) 10-15 0 (b. 1815-1820) 15-20 0 (b. 1810-1815) 20-30 0 (b. 1800-1810) 30-40 0 (b. 1790-1800) 40-50 0 (b. 1780-1790) 50-60 1 (b. 1770-1780) 60-70 0 (b. 1760-1770) 70-80 0 (b. 1750-1760) 80-90 0 (b. 1740-1750) 90-100 0 (b. 1730-1740) over 100 0 (b. before 1730) Females: under 5 0 (b. 1825-1830) 5-10 1 (b. 1820-1825) 10-15 0 (b. 1815-1820) 15-20 0 (b. 1810-1815) 20-30 1 (b. 1800-1810) 30-40 1 (b. 1790-1800) 40-50 0 (b. 1780-1790) 50-60 1 (b. 1770-1780) 60-70 0 (b. 1760-1770) 70-80 0 (b. 1750-1760) 80-90 0 (b. 1740-1750) 90-100 0 (b. 1730-1740) over 100 0 (b. before 1730) Total: 6 Unfortunately the 1810 census data does not "propagate" well to the 1830 census data since the age range estimates for the oldest male are different (born before 1765 in the 1810 census vs. born between 1770 and 1780 in the 1830 census). This makes me conjecture that the 1810 and 1830 census data should not be attributed to the same individuals. Anyone know more about either of these Isaac Whitworths?

    3. Concerning veteran records, the following is a statement from vet affairs: "Attention: There is a rumor circulating among veteran service organizations that Official Military Personnel Files (OMPFs) at the National Personnel Records Center will be digitized and then destroyed. This rumor is NOT TRUE. Neither the Department of Defense (DoD) nor the National Personnel Records Center intend to destroy any OMPFs stored at the Center. The purpose of any electronic scanning would be to reduce the handling of fragile records during the reference process or to reduce the time necessary to locate and answer an OMPF inquiry. The National Archives and Records Administration preserves and protects OMPFs because they are permanently valuable records that document the essential evidence of military service for the veterans of our nation." The following is the correct url for vets record request: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/index.html Hope this helps, Bill Brandon [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Mari Byers [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2004 2:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TNRUTHER] attn: Teresa Teresa, You know how awful I am about losing email addys.
