Mari Byers reporting in <G> WILLIAMS BARFIELD HARRIET SOPHRONIA TARKINGTON BARFIELD-From Franklin..Williamson Co., TN. Married Oct. 28, 1810-Amite County, MS. Moved to Rutherford County soon after and raised a family till Williams got rode out of town on a rail. (He was a tobacco dealer and the market crashed.) Harriet and the kids went "down the river" alone to Natchez around 1820. Williams is on the 1830 Adams County, MS. census with them. After that aliens attacked and he is lost. (sigh) One odd thing..in Natchez Wms. is not listed on ANY of Harriet's houses, etc. There is however another man listed with her on "papers". Mari Byers has graciously made it so that posts to the Rutherford County forum come to our list. When posting to one of these messages, remember that the person who originally posted to the forum may not be a member of our list. Please do submit the information to the list for the benefit of those of us here, but you might want to click on the forum link in the email and post your information there as well for the benefit of the person who asked the original question. Otherwise, they will not see your answer. Rarely is Mari the one wanting information, so responding to her, either on or off the list doesn't get the reply to the right person either. <G> I don't want to discourage people from posting the information on TNRUTHER-L, but I do want to make sure that the original poster of the question sees the answers too. Fain/Phaine/Almaville According to the HISTORY OF ALMAVILLE, TN compiled by the Heritage Committee of Almaville Extension Homemakers Club, November 1985, "Older residents remember a local boy, David Fain and Alma, the pretty girl he hoped to marry. Alma died young, whether through sickness or accident no one recalls. When Alma died, David Fain's dream of a happy married life with his sweetheart died too. The enormity of David's grief cast a pall over the tiny Rutherford County community of Locks. [As Almaville was then called] In 1898, the post office department requested David Fain to operate the local post office from his general store. He was also asked to name the post office. Fain chose to name the post office for his sweetheart, Alma. He took the name Alma and added "ville" to it and suggested the name to the post office department. The name was approved, and when the community prospered, it was named Almaville." (From the "Introduction" page of the above named publication.) This publication was written by members of the local community who told their tales based upon memory or what they had been told by older generations and by various people affiliated with the history of the area, among whom was C.C. Henderson who wrote THE STORY OF MURFREESBORO. A listing of acknowledgements and bibliography is printed before the table of contents. I believe this publication is out of print, but the local library has a copy. Also perhaps a way to check this would be through the post office department. > >> The following new message has been posted on Forum at >> <http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/webbbs/queries/index.cgi>. >> >> *************************************************************************** >> >> >> MESSAGE: (#2029) Fain/Phaine/Almaville >> >> <http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?rev=2029> >> AUTHOR: Randi >> DATE: Thursday, 13 January 2005, at 2:39 p.m. >> >> I am trying to find out more about Almaville, Rutherford County, >> Tennessee, >> and how it came to be named. Steve, From the answers I received about District 132 in 1910 it appears it was Rutherford Co. Civic District 18 which if I look at the 1878 Beer's Map it is due west of Civic District 19 which included part of Readyville. District 18 has a creek running through it that I believe to read Liylile Creek. It's not plain but does this mean anything to you? This Civic District was very near what was considered Murfreesboro at the time. To get a good look at the map click on http://www.tngennet.org/rutherfor/map1878/ then double click on the 18the district and you will see people's names who lived there in 1878. I did not see any of our Bragg listed.
