Mary Frances White was my grandfather's sister. She was married to James N. Puckett that is supposed to have killed Mary Frances's father, William White. There was a grand jusy investigation but not enough evidence. Family legend on both sides though say it was James N. Puckett that shot and killed my gr-gr-grandfather. Had you heard this story. In a message dated 1/25/2005 7:26:34 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I am researching the James Moore King family from Murfreesboro. Thanks, Edie Edie, Here is some information I found on your James Moore King. Hope it is of help to you. Jo Ann Crafton Copy and paste this in your web browser, click go and then type in his name. There is a lot of information on your James Moore King. _http://www.searchforancestors.com/google/searcher.html_ (http://www.searchforancestors.com/google/searcher.html) BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH James Moore King was born on November 18, 1792, in Clinton, North Carolina. His parents were Henry King IV and Jeanett Moore King. In 1807, James Moore King moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee, with his widowed mother and his younger brother: Henry. Both boys enlisted to fight with Andrew Jackson in the Indian Wars and in General Coffee’s regiment of dragoons for the War of 1812. James' brother Henry was killed at the Battle of New Orleans. James continued his military service in the militia during the Seminole War. However, the military was not the primary career that he wanted for himself: agriculture was his path. In a letter to his uncle upon his return to his home outside Murfreesboro, TN, after the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812, King wrote, “With pleasure I inform you of my return home to the joyful scenes and pleasures of Tennessee, after a trying and fatigueing (sic) campaign of near seven months.” At the time his home was the original log cabin that he, his brother, mother, and the few slaves they brought with them had lived in when they first moved to Middle Tennessee. He still maintained strong ties with his family in North Carolina, as evidenced by the active correspondence between himself and those family members remaining in North Carolina, but he considered Murfreesboro his home. In correspondence between himself and his family from 1815-1819, King spoke of finding a wife back in Sampson County, North Carolina, and his family encouraged him to return for that purpose. Not only was his attempt at this unsuccessful, but his one offer of marriage to a woman there was rejected. While still remaining in contact with his extended family, by 1820, he was no longer looking for a wife or place to live in North Carolina. In a letter from his cousin, William G. Parrish, he received the first acknowledgement of their acceptance of this. Parrish wrote, “I at one time enjoyed the pleasing hope, that we ere many years revolved, should become near-neighbors in this pleasant, and salubrious claim, but hearing that you have again entered in the delightful pursuits of Agriculture in your State, precludes all hope of enjoying that pleasure I fondly anticipated.” James took over the land that his mother had owned, purchased more slaves, assisted other family members in financial matters, and married a local girl, Martha Batey in 1821. In 1831 he completed Rural Rest, a two story, ornate house that became the home for he, his wife, and their thirteen children until he died in 1877. He never ran for a political office, but maintained close ties with those who did, including his cousin, Thomas O. Moore, the governor of Louisiana. James Moore King strongly opposed secession, but when the state did secede, he and his sons enlisted with the Confederate Army. During the Civil War, most of the King slaves deserted the plantation leaving the care of the house and the farm to Martha Batey King and her invalid son, William Henry King. When the Union Army occupied Murfreesboro, the King family was assigned a Union soldier to guard their house, but a great deal of their livestock and produce were stolen or appropriated during the war. .James Moore King, married Martha Batey, 11/24/1821, Rutherford, Tennessee.

I'm researching the WOOD families in Rutherford Co.,TN. Thomas WOOD, Sr. b. ca.1750 in VA moved to Rutherford Co., TN in the late 1810s from VA - probably Buckingham Co., TN. His children were all born in VA and also moved to Rutherford Co. 1. Edmund WOOD - born ca.1776 2. Thomas WOOD, Jr. 3. John WOOD 4. Robert WOOD - born ca. 1781 5. Elizabeth WOOD I'm going through the available census records, deed records, court records, tax records, marriage records for all WOOD or WOODS - and attempting to place them in family groups. I descend from Robert WOOD who was born about 1781 in VA and married Elizabeth HURT (marriage recorded Prince Edward Co., VA). This couple had 10-14 children. There were two different WOOD families in the area - with the same given names - of course! ;-) I'll post more later. If you have a WOOD or WOODS connection, please let me know. Thank you, Ginger Rogers New Caney, TX

There was a pencil factory in Walter Hill. If you were standing on the bridge over Stones River on Lebanon Pike (Hwy. 231) looking toward the mill and dam you could see the pencil factory behind them. There was a very tall pencil beside the mill. My grandfather sold them cedar for their pencils. I have an old photo that appeared in the Murfreesboro paper in the 70s or so. I can email you a copy but it may be a couple of weeks before I can get to it. I'm not at my main computer which is where the photo is. Let me know. Estelle

I bel;ieve the pencil mill in the 1920 was in the Walter Hill area. Maybe someone else knows. I remember hearing my mother talk about it. Thanks, [email protected]
I know very little about my White line. Just info from 1850 census showing William White, age 53, farmer, born in Va. He was married to Martha ?nee b. in NC, age 36. Their children Dorothy A. 7 b. TN, Nancy J. 4 born in TN, Charles W. 2 born in TN. I wonder if he is related to the Rick H. White just 4 houses down from him since families lived close to each other in that time period. I am descended from Dorothy A. White who married Thomas Marion Cooke in 1858. Hi, I have posted this before but since everyone is listing their connections to Rutherford County I thought I would try again. I am trying to trace back my LANDRUM family connection and cannot find anyone earlier than Nathaniel Carpenter Landrum, b. November 26, 1847 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. My idea is that he had to have parents and they have had to come from somewhere, and they had to have gone somewhere. This is what I have right now: Nathaniel Carpenter Landrum, b. November 26, 1847 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, TN. He died March 17, 1922 not sure where. I know nothing more about Nathaniel or who his parents were, or from where they came or went. Nathaniels parents departed Rutherford County, Tennessee prior to 1850 and don't show up again until 1872 when they are in San Augustine, Texas. They may have gone through Jones County, Mississippi and be connected with the branch of Landrum's and the Landrum Homestead at Laurel, Mississippi. Nathaniel married Margarette Noel (Jan. 26, 1871 at San Augustine, San Augustine County, Texas) b. July 29, 1848 and died April 6, 1928. No places. The Noel family was in Mississippi in 1842, 1844 and 1846 as three girls were born somewhere in the state. don't know yet where. They celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary in San Augustine in 1921. Children: James Edward Landrum, born January 17, 1872 at San Augustine, San Augustine County, Texas Susan Emma Landrum, born March 17, 1873, at Pleasant Hill, Sabine Parish, Louisiana Aleatha Ann Landrum, born Dec. 4, 1874 Florance Californa Landrum born 1876 Smith County, Texas David Landrum, born Feb 21, 1878, Henderson, Rusk County, Texas Ida Eugene Landrum born Sept.13, 1882, Robline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana Maggie Adelia Landrum born Feb 11, 1886 Nora Bell Landrum born July 31, 1888 Fred Landrum born Nov 22, 1890 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas Thomas Murry Landrum (my great uncle) born Sept. 22, 1879, San Marcus, Hays County, Texas, d. 1957 married about 1918 Virginia Frances Lay born Feb. 12, 1888, d. 1983. Thomas Murry Landrum married (about 1913) Virginia Lay (born February 12, 1888, and died 1983. Children of Thomas and Virginia: Thomas Eugene Landrum (my uncle) born 1914 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana married (December 19, 1946) Jessie Virginia Matthews Frances Murrel Landrum Earl Robins Landrum Mildred Wallie Landrum Does any of this fit with anything you have found? Beverly, John Reed b. 1764 Randolph Co, NC applied for a Revolutionary War pension from Bedford Co, TN in 1832. His wife Sarah Bolen Reed applied in 1845 for a widow's pension. This record is in Soldiers of the Revolution of Bedford Co, TN by Tim and Helen Marsh and I first found it the new book, Pioneers of Rutherford County, TN. I do not have a copy of the original pension and need to get a copy to verify several things.
