Can someone tell me about the prison in Memphis mentioned in this article, or anything else about this article? In the "Confederate Veteran", published in Nashville, TN., December, 1901,an article written by A H McAlister, New Albany, Miss, titled "Ballentine's Partisan Rangers": ....".Many other boys were prompted to go to the front and stay because of the treatment their families received by the Federals. Of this class were the McKinney boys of our company, whose father was insulted, robbed of everything, imprisoned, waylaid, and shot by Hurst's band of Tories. Mr McKinney was sent to the "Irwin Block" prison in Memphis, Tenn., because he did not see proper to swear falsely in taking the oath of allegiance. However, the officers of the prison released him for $500.00 in cash sent by Dr. Stovall, of Camden, Tenn. The McKinney boys refer to J J (John) and William McKinney. A H McAlister married the McKinney boy's sister, Josephine, after the war. The boy's father was William McKinney. J J McKinney was my grandfather. I will appreciate any help anyone can give me. Sincerely, Dortha Greenlee
