This story came from the Chattanooga Free Press,Sept.14,1933. NO BOND FOR MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER. Floyd Johnson of La Follette Must Explain Actions On Night of Fire Which Destroyed Family. While Sheriff Baxter Swicegood of Cumberland County continues his investigation into the alleged wholesale murders in and around the Winesap Community, situated 18 miles southwest of Crossville, public interest throughout the state is focused on La Follette, the county seatof Campbell County,in upper Tennessee. Here on the night of Sept.1, one of the most tragic events in the criminal history of the state is alleged to have taken pace. At this time Floyd Johnson,a resident of La Follette,is in the Knox county jail at Knoxville, being held without bond on a charge of murder- the murder of his wife and three small children. He was removed to Knoxville for safe keeping shortly after being given a hearing before magistrates Friday afternoon of last week. The charges of first degree murder grew out of the burning of the Johnson home shortly after 2 o'clock on the morning of Sept.1. Mrs.Johnson and her three small children perishing in the flames.According to testimony offered at the preliminary hearing, neighbors heard screams like that of a woman, followed shortly by an explosion. Shortly afterward,Johnson dashed out of the house, nude. He went to the home of Jeff Hatmaker and informed him of the fire.Hatmaker gave Johnson his overalls and then went back into the house to dress. In the meantime,Johnson went to a nearby filling station, broke in and called the fire department.Returning to the scene of the fire,Johnson is said to have removed furniture from the front porch and then went back to the rear porch where a washing machine was pulled to a point of safety. When neighbors arrived on the scene and were informed of the fact that Mrs.Johnson and the three children were trapped in the living room,Jeff Hatmaker testified that he went to the window, lifted a shade and made a hasty survey of the room, failing to discover the victims. At that time, according to the witness testimony, fire was just breaking into the room and anyone trapped in that part of the building could have been rescued with ease.He estimated that this investigation was made a least eight minutes after Johnson had made the alarm. BODIES PILED TOGETHER. Search of the ruins revealed the body of Mrs. Johnson and her three children piled in the corner of the room.Unburned bed clothing indicated that the clothing had been piled over the bodies.Officials charge that positions of the bodies when found indicated that there was no struggle of suffocation. For instance, Mrs.Johnson was lying on her face with arms outstretched, the bodies of her three children being piled in unusual positions. They also charge that there was evidence of much ????? on the clothing under Mrs. Johnson. Those pushing the prosecution have charged that Johnson went to La Follette a few days before the tragedy and took out insurance on the three children, but that a special clause prevents him from collecting. The policy would not have gone into effect until Sept.4 three days after the tragedy. The house and furniture were all insured for $1,000. It is also said that a hive of bees had been placed on the cistern in the back yard preventing the use of water from this source to fight the fire. WANTED TO BE FREE. Witnesses were also introduced to show that Johnson had only a few days prior to the fire, expressed the desire to be free again. This coupled with the fact that he was known to have been attentive to a woman in that community, and that the woman in question has expressed her intentions of going into court with the truth, indicates that the trial will be a sensation from start to finish.Presence of a five gallon can found in the smoke ???? in which gasoline had been kept, has to be explained, together with many other mysterious angles connected with the case, the officers insist. Johnson explained that he heard Mrs. Johnson shouting for help when awakened by the flames, and that he also recalls having seen one of the babies crawl off the bed.He explained however, that he did not have time to save his wife or any of his children.Mrs.Johnson was ill at the time having been confined to her bed for several weeks.
