Thomas ("Ham") SCROGGINS,former gravedigger at the Greenwood cemetery, was indicted by the Hamilton county grand jury yesterday on a felony charge for the desecration of the grave of the late Mrs.Holtzie GUESS several weeks ago.A few days after cemetery officials discovered that Mrs.GUESS ' had been reopened and the body pulled out of the coffin,SCROGGINS was arrested on a misdemeanor charge for removing a body from it's place of interment. The indictment returned against SCROGGINS includes two counts,one charging him with a misdemeanor,the other charging him with a felony.If he is convicted on the felony charge he may be sent to the penitentiary,but if the felony charge is thrown out the maximum punishment that he can receive is a workhouse sentence of not more than eleven months and twenty-nine days and a fine of not more than $750. Shortly after his arrest SCROGGINS reportedly signed a confession in which he admitted reopening the grave.The body of Mrs.GUESS was found lying on top of the coffin the next day after it was buried. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The grand jury also indicted Mrs. NOVELLA PACK for the murder of Mrs. KATIE OWENS on Aug.20.The slaying of Mrs.OWENS occurred on Aug.20 at the intersection of Seventeenth St. and Rossville avenue and was said to be the result of a jealous quarrel between the two women over Mrs.PACK'S husband. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The grand jury returned eighty-seven indictments and eighty--three no-true bills yesterday.The list of indictments: Murder-NOVELLA PACK, CHRISTINE COTTON, and ELIZABETH BOHANON.
