Ooops,I sent the post before finishing the article. lol. ......,and then entered the Army, greatly against his wishes. In 1864 he was taken sick in East Tennessee, and left by his Company in a seemingly dyng condition. After the close of the war he went to Atlanta,Ga., and for two years was engaged in the grocery business, after which he moved to Meigs County,Tenn., and eight years later located at Calhoun He is one of the leading and most successful merchants of the place, and carries a first-class stock of goods. He was appointed postmaster in 1880,and filled the office for six years. He is a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church,a Master Mason, and a Democrat. In January 1867,he married Mattie, daughter of Madison and Matilda Johnson, who was born in Meigs County and died at Calhoun January 24,1878. She secured a thorough education at Georgetown,Tenn.,was a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and the mother of four children, Etta, Mattie, Maggie and Leonidas, Three are living. Karen. This was a reprinted version from 1887.
This is the complete article about I.H. Bond from the book "Goodspeed History of East Tennessee", published by Charles and Randy Elder. I.H.Bond, a prominent merchant of Calhoun, was born in Knox County,Tenn., twelve miles below Knoxville,March 10, 1828, a son of George and Eliza (Swan) Bond.He received an excellent education at Maryville,Blount County,Tenn., After traveling extensively over the South he attended school at Clinton, Anderson County,Tenn.,for one year. He then went to Texas, where he taught school for four years, and returned to East Tennessee one year after the outbreak of the Rebellion. He was in the employ of the Confederate Government one year,
Here is the whole article about Samuel P. Blair from the book,"Goodspeed History of East Tennessee", published by Charles and Randy Elder. Sameul P.Blair- a member of the mercantile firm of Blair,John & Co., also a tanner at Mouse Creek, was born in Monroe County,East Tenn., Aptil 5,1847. He is the fourth of the six children of Thomas R. and Athamalinda (Martin) Blair, both of Irish descent and natives of Tennessee. The father was born in Monroe County in 1812.He has always been a successful tanner and is a Republican. His wife was born in Rhea County about 1810.They were married in Knox County, are now residents of Loudon County, and are members of the Presbyterian Church. The subject of our sketch received a common-school education in Blount County.September 1, 1868 he married Miss Mary L.Martin, who was born in Roane County Oct.21, 1851. Both are consistent and esteemed members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr.Blair, being raised a tanner, engaged in the tanning business in Morganton,Loudon County, in the fall of 1868,and carried on the business there until the spring of 1877. He then came to Mouse Creek Station, McMinn County, and purchased from H.L.Cate an old tan-yard,in which he has greatly enlarged and improved upon. He has also a shoe, harness and saddle shop. In Aug.1882,he was elected Justice of the peace of the Fourth Civil District of McMinn County. In Aug.1884, in partnership with Z.T. and A.K. John, he established a general merchandise store at the same place, which has been a success. Karen.
>From the Chattanooga Free Press,Oct.20 1933. JOHNSON GUILTY OF MURDER, GETS LONG PEN TERM. La Follette Filling Station Operator Convicted of Burning Entire Family- Gets 21 Years. Jacksboro,Tenn,Oct.20,1933. "Finis" was written to one of the most sensational murder cases in the history of the state, when a Campbell County circuit court jury gave Floyd Johnson 21 years here Tuesday morning for the murder of his wife and three children. He was found guilty of first degree murder. The case against the 27 year-old La Follette filling station operator originated on the night of August 31 when the Johnson home, on the outskirts of the city, was totally destroyed by fire,Mrs. Johnson and her three small children perishing in the flames. The state charged that Johnson murdered members of his family and then set flames to his home to destroy evidence of his guilt The prosecution claimed that Johnson had reasons for wanting to get his wife out of the way.At the time of the tragedy it was claimed that she was an invalid, having been confined to her bed for weeks prior to her untimely death. While there was much sensational evidence produced at the hearing, the outcome of the case seemed to hinge on the testimony of Eules Anderson, who took the stand and swore that he visited the Johnson home the night of the tragedy and that Johnson approached him with an offer to burn his (Johnson's) house.Anderson said he and Johnson were drinking heavily, but that he refused to accept the offer. The defene tried to impeach Anderson's testimony, resulting in the latter being arrested, but later being released on perjury charges. ANOTHER STAR WITNESS. Another important witness, whose testimony probably saved Johnson from the chair, was Rev.J.H.Torrey,who told how he heard an explosion which was followed by screams, which he took to be those of a woman or a child. This indicated that Mrs.Johnson was alive when the house burst into flames. In pushing it's charges, the state proved that Johnson had to crawl over the bed, alleged to have been occupied by his wife and children, to reach the window through which he escaped.Johnson didn't deny this, but claimed that he remembered nothing about the affair, excepting a vague memory of hearing his wife say,"Oh Lord,Floyd," and a sound which he took to be that of one of the children falling off the bed. When the flames had been subdued, the body of Mrs.Johnson, face down, was found over in an opposite corner of the room, with the charred remains of the three children huddled close by. The ???? claimed that they were first murdered and then piled iin the corner of the room. Johnson took the verdict very calmy, but his attorneys announced their intentions of asking for a new trial, the grounds of their claims being stated later. Karen.

Hello, I am wondering if anyone has identified (in today's geography) the counties/place of residence of the signers of the 1787 Petition regarding the Lost State of Franklin, one of many online versions of which can be found here: http://members.tripod.com/tracers/franklin.htm I am particularly interested in whether the Thomas Williams there might be Thomas Williams found 40 years later in Cocke Co TN, who I believe maybe father of James Williams b. there who dies 1842 in Moniteau Co Missouri. Cocke is burned before Civil War, but there is blessedly a transcription of a Survey Book at the Sevier County website, which can be viewed here scrolling down: http://www.sevierlibrary.org/ahgp/coc.htm That's about as close as we'll get to deed books for early settlers, and will be added to soon by a database of the early TN land grants for Sevier and Cocke Counties. Or might the above Thomas Williams, be connected to the later Judge Thomas L. Williams? Thanks in advance, Janet Hunter
Documents that were added to the Tennessee USGenWeb Archives and Tombstone Transcription Project last week are listed at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/newdocs.htm If you have documents about your ancestors that you would like to share with others, please let us know.
