Forgive me. This e-mail is being sent as a one and all together. I wanted all, to know what we are looking at here in california legistalor at the moment. Could affect you later down the road ----- Original Message ----- From: JackieF Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2002 10:00 PM To: CA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CA-CEMETERIES] Birth & Death Records in California Hi all Listers, Below is a email I received concerning the new laws that are trying to be passed in California about the Birth and Daeth Certificates. If it starts here then it is sure to spread to other states. Let's try and nip this in the bud. Please heed Nan's message and get out your paper and pens and write the addresses below. Original Message: ----------------- From: Nan & George Wolf 71532.734@compuserve.com Subject: ACTION ALERT- CA SB1614 Hi: Am forwarding a message from Iris Carter Jones, the legislative analyst for the California Genealogical Society. It does not look good. She put a RAPID E-MAIL CUT-N-PASTE at the very bottom of the message. You may have time to send a snail mail letter. Paper in the hand is more effective than an e-mail in the computer. Faxes are also paper - good idea. But, send along the e-mail also. Regards, Nan Wolf 71532.734@compuserve.com -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: Iris Jones, INTERNET:ijones@accessbee.com To: Master List 3, INTERNET:ijones@accessbee.com "G.A.S. List", INTERNET:ijones@ns.net Date: 8/10/02 12:05 PM RE: ACTION ALERT- CA SB1614 ALERT SB1614 - LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - AUGUST 10, 2002 Forgive me for not updating information during this last week, it has been like following the bouncing ball. Certainly more than you want to know. Where we stand right now is, SB1614's required waiver has not been granted, but it could at any time. Then SB1614 will move quickly through the process. It could be heard as early as Wednesday 14 August in Assembly Appropriations. The following ALERT has been shared by our 'partners in opposition.' It is imperative we let the committee members know of our objects. ----Iris Carter Jones, Legislative Network Coordinator, CSGA. ACTION ALERT CALIFORNIA SB1614, WHICH WILL REMOVE THE CALIFORNIA BIRTH AND DEATH INDICES FROM THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, IS ON A FAST TRACK TO THE STATE ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS. IMMEDIATE ACTION IS NEEDED. Heavy opposition has been mounted to kill SB1614. However, in the event that our efforts fail, this bill will rapidly move to the California State Assembly Committee on Appropriations as early as August 14th. We cannot wait for any more committees to wheel and deal. Full access to the Birth and Death Indices is at stake. We must act now. It is vital that you call, fax, and E-mail ALL MEMBERS OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS IMMEDIATELY and urge a DO NOT PASS vote on SB1614. Tell the committee it must not spend taxpayer's money on a bill that won't do what it says it will do. SB1614 purports to solve the problems of identity theft by removing the birth and death indices from public domain. This bill is misdirected. It won't work because most experts agree that the majority of identity theft occurs through the literal theft of mail, purses, or wallets, through on-line and telephone scams, and occasionally through the misuse of birth and death CERTIFICATES-NOT the indices. In support of this fact, both the Department of Justice and the State's Office of Privacy Protection confirm that neither office has documentation that the indices have been used for identity theft. SB1614 will cost the state of California more then $2 million dollars in the first year alone. In addition, there will be *annual* local mandated costs which will run into multimillions of dollars. In California's current budget CRISIS, taxpayer's dollars must not be used to fund a bill that won't work. VOTE NO ON SB1614 Read the full text at <http://info.sen.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_1614&sess=CUR&h ouse =B&site=sen> Please share this information with any adoption and genealogy lists you are on. Added Reflections of the Past: 1896-1929 from v1n2 In 1976, in observation of America’s 200th birthday and in-conjunction with local Bicentennial activities, Carmel Burke published a booklet about Scott Co, TN which listed notable local, state and national historical events. This article is an excerpt from that booklet. Added A Brief History of Chitwood and Winfield from v1n2 A community developed by one family of people -- James and Martha Chitwood and their children: Lazarus, William, Daniel, Pleasant, Winnie, and Elizabeth. They, with James' cousin Shadrack settled the area known as Chitwood that later became known as Winfield. This is a story by Abb Crabtree, a Winfield resident. Added The historic Bryant home at Bear Creek from v1n2 The Bryant House, named for Louis F. Bryant, is located in Bear Creek just northwest of Oneida in a secluded area formerly known as Roberta. The aging English manor style home is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the only residence in Scott County to have that distinction Added Roach's Creek: modern town of a bygone era from v1n2 Sitting in a valley between two mile-high mountains was the most modern coal operation of its time. It was called Roach’s Creek. It was the dream of a few men in the State of Ohio in the year of 1921. This is the story of the Roach's Creek Coal Mine. Added Jellico Grocery - a tradition since 1914 from v1n3 This is the story of the Jellico Grocery Company of Oneida that started business here on May 1, 1914 through its buyout in 1975 by the H. T. Hackney Company headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, up to present day (1990). Added Looking Back: Growth and Progress Since '42 from v1n3 Bill Swain, Chairman of the Oneida First National Bank was asked to reminisce about his life and experiences covering the last 47 years since he arrived in Scott County on June 3, 1942. Added Reflections Of The Past: 1929-1950 from v1n3 This is a continuation of excerpts from a publication compiled by the late Carmel Burke of Oneida during the local celebration of America’s Bicentennial in 1976. The booklet, about Scott Co, TN, listed notable local, state and national historical events. This article is the 2nd excerpt from that booklet. (part 2) Added 1950 Oneida Baseball Team from v1n3 A picture Added The Glass House: story of a bygone era from v1n4 If you are 40 years old or older, you probably remember a restaurant that was located just south of the junction of Highways 63 and U.S. 27 called the Glass House. This is the story of of the famous Helenwood restaurant. Added The brick-making era of Robbins, Tenn. from v1n4 The story of how the Southern Clay Manufacturing Company of Jersey City, New Jersey came to be in Robbins, TN. Added World War II Navy Armed Guard from v1n4 The main purpose of the Armed Guard was to protect allied and American merchant ships: to maintain the guns and ammunition, protect the ship, its crew and precious cargo from the enemy, with the order to fire the guns as long as the ship was afloat. This was to keep the enemy from crippling the ship, then boarding it for provisions they needed to stay on patrol longer. This is the story of three Scott Countians who served in the Navy Armed Guard. Scott Co, TN Reunions > Added Huckeby Family reunion
