    1. [TNROOTS-L] Charles L. Ruffin
    2. Crilley
    3. Can anyone help me with information on Charles L. Ruffin - Johnson City TN I'm trying to help a fellow-Ruffin researcher, and hoped someone on this List might give us some leads. Charles L. Ruffin was the civil engineer who built the Black Mountain Railway and other railroads. ** As part of my research on the Black Mountain Railway, I am interested in one Charles L. Ruffin, who was a civil engineer and promoter of that lumber-hauling road in North Carolina. In particular, I would like to locate any papers or other effects that might have survived from his building of that line from 1910 to about 1913. Here is what I know about the man: Ruffin as born 1866 in Virginia. (descendant of the famous Edmund Ruffin line) He had a wife Mary, born 1875-1878 in Maryland; daughters Mary (b. 1897), Henrietta (b. 1895?), and Ella(b. 1905), and son Charles L. Jr.(b. 1901). In 1900, he lived in Richmond VA. In 1910 he lived at 401 Holston Avenue, Johnson City TN. (Don't know if family was with him in TN or not) He worked with South and Western RailRoad as division engineer. "I began service with that road in November 1905 and had charge of the location of what was known as the Fourth Division, from Spruce Pine (NC), to a point opposite Embreeville (TN) on the Nolichucky River. " Ruffin was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, but they could not tell me anything else about him. Virginia

    1. [TNROOTS-L] TARPLEY of DeKalb & White Co's, TN
    2. Craig Beeman
    3. "Hello again Cousins!" Or I do surely hope this might prove being so! Might any of you be familiar with DeKalb and White Co., TN, TARPLEY family? Am engaged in an on-going effort to trace the descendants of our CRAIG family from the mid-1700's down through about 1920 or so, as best I might be able, for the benefit of future generations of family researchers. To date I have varying amounts of information for a bit over 5,000 descendants of our CRAIG family coming down just through the sixth generation. I recently learned of the 10 Jul 1853, DeKalb Co., TN, marriage for Elizabeth WILSON to John TARPLEY. Elizabeth being a CRAIG family descendant, I am now hoping to follow her descendants, down through to at least the 1920 census, if at all possible. Yesterday, I was able to get back to Mid-Continent Public Library once again, and was successful in locating this family and some of its descendants in the 1870 and 1880 DeKalb Co., TN censuses, and in the 1900 White Co., TN census. Descendants of John TARPLEY and Elizabeth WILSON and Mary L. HODGE 1. John TARPLEY, born abt 1835 in , , TN He married (1) on 10 Jul 1853 in , Dekalb, TN Elizabeth WILSON, born abt 1828 in , , TN; died bef 9 Jun 1874 in , DeKalb, TN, daughter of Samuel D. WILSON and Dorcas Caroline NESMITH; (2) on 9 Jun 1874 in , DeKalb, TN Mary L. HODGE, born abt 1853 in , , TN. Children of John TARPLEY and Elizabeth WILSON were as follows: + 2 i William TARPLEY, born abt 1854 in , , TN. He married (1) Sarah (---); (2) Nanncy A. (---). 3 ii Sarah TARPLEY, born abt 1859 in , , TN. 4 iii John TARPLEY, born abt 1862 in , , TN. 5 iv Monroe TARPLEY, born abt 1864 in , , TN. 6 v Lemuel TARPLEY, born abt 1868 in , , TN. 7 vi Josie TARPLEY, born abt 1872 in , , TN. Children of John TARPLEY and Mary L. HODGE were as follows: 8 i Henry TARPLEY, born Jun 1882 in , , TN. 9 ii Limmuel TARPLEY, born Feb 1886 in , , TN. 10 iii Nancy A. TARPLEY, born Mar 1889 in , , TN. Generation 2 2. William TARPLEY (John), born abt 1854 in , , TN. He married (1) Sarah (---), born abt 1854 in , , TN; (2) Nanncy A. (---), born May 1845 in , , TN. Children of William TARPLEY and Sarah (---) were as follows: 11 i Thomas L. TARPLEY, born abt 1870 in , DeKalb, TN. 12 ii Earnest TARPLEY, born abt 1872 in , DeKalb, TN. 13 iii Nancy J.
