Hi Mary Sue, I am doing lookups from the 1850 census, i don't think that anyone born in 1895 would be in there. Was E. T. Forrester an adult by 1850 perhaps? Beth, You are a darling to offer this ... am I too late, I hope not? Hubby decided he wanted to take me out for dinner and a show .. so we got back later than planned. As for the search .. if you have the time ... I know you only have the heads of household ... but I'm looking for anything with the surname CHAMBERS in SHELBY County or Memphis proper. My great-grandfather FRED THOMAS CHAMBERS was born in 1852 .. and I'm hoping that you may snag his family. I know you wanted more than just the surname ... if I knew it I wouldn't have to ask you for help! I only wish I DID know .. that's why I'm searching! Thank you, dearie ... if this is more than you had expected to do .. I'll understand. Hugs! Maggie

Actually, if you have the social security number, and you can possibly get than from the social security death index, you only pay $7. If you don't have the SSN you pay $16. I know as I've ordered several within the past 6 months. Bob .. Just a thought .. have you contacted the Social Security folks about getting a copy of the original application? That would have all the data you need on it .. place and date of birth, parents names, etc. They only charge about $10 for these .. I have ordered them for my Gran and her brother .. but they do take about 4 - 6 months to get. Don't contact the lcoal office .. they only act horrified and tell you everything is private! Go to Ancestry.com, search the SSDI, and when you find the exact listing, click on the button to print the form letter, which requests the copy under the Freedom of Information Act. It also gives you the correct amount and address to send your request to. One other suggestion .. in my Gran's case, the Courthouse was burnt and there WERE no birth records, so she must have provided other documentation. I have requested that they copy all documentation in their file for my genealogical research purposes and explained that she is my maternal grandmother. You might want to do the same. I've heard stories of people getting a whole packet of wonderful information this way. Good luck! Maggie in MI

.....And while we're on the subject of railroads, does anyone know of a history or other records of the LaFollette Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, based in LaFollette, Campbell County? My father was an engineer and mechanic for them, and I believe he and/or his brother Robert may have worked in mines in that area, c. 1900-1918, or perhaps before. Mary Evelyn GLENN Young

In a message dated 10/19/2000 11:04:59 AM Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2000 08:51:24 -0500 From: Crilley <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Message-Id: <[email protected]> Subject: [TNROOTS-L] Charles L. Ruffin Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Can anyone help me with information on Charles L. Ruffin - Johnson City TN I'm trying to help a fellow-Ruffin researcher, and hoped someone on this List might give us some leads. Charles L. Ruffin was the civil engineer who built the Black Mountain Railway and other railroads. ** As part of my research on the Black Mountain Railway, I am interested in one Charles L. Ruffin, who was a civil engineer and promoter of that lumber-hauling road in North Carolina. In particular, I would like to locate any papers or other effects that might have survived from his building of that line from 1910 to about 1913. Here is what I know about the man: Ruffin as born 1866 in Virginia. (descendant of the famous Edmund Ruffin line) He had a wife Mary, born 1875-1878 in Maryland; daughters Mary (b. 1897), Henrietta (b. 1895?), and Ella(b. 1905), and son Charles L. Jr.(b. 1901). In 1900, he lived in Richmond VA. In 1910 he lived at 401 Holston Avenue, Johnson City TN. (Don't know if family was with him in TN or not) He worked with South and Western RailRoad as division engineer. "I began service with that road in November 1905 and had charge of the location of what was known as the Fourth Division, from Spruce Pine (NC), to a point opposite Embreeville (TN) on the Nolichucky River. " Ruffin was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, but they could not tell me anything else about him. Virginia >> I have a friend whose name is Ruffin Apperson and he is a Rufin descendant who does a little family history. I'll ask him to get in touch with you when he gets back from vacation. Hi Pamela, I think the Russell Family are part of my Husbands Clan. His Grandmother was named Ava Jane Russell Shoupe. They were born in Claiborn County, TN. Ava Jane's Mother was Sarah Russell, and married Thomas Robertson. They died in Knox County, KY. and buried in the Higgins Cemetary. Sarah and Thomas had a Son named Scott. I have a photo of him. There was also a Sister named Hester. Does any bells ring here. Thank you.
