Hi, I'm new to the list but have discovered lots of connection to Jackson County. Has anyone done a survey of the Duke Young Cemetery in Gainesboro or the Ragland/Haile Cemetery? Carol

The only reference I have is the 'Tennesseans in The Civil War' They don't mention where the soldier was from. There is (1) J.J. and (7) John McKinney and (10) William McKinney. I am sending the one J.J. McKinney. If you could give me a little more information on the unit your John and William served in it might help pinpoint the right man for me and someone else on the list with better references than I have. Here is the one J.J. McKINNEY, J. J. K Co. 19/20 Cav. There are so many John and William under all surnames. I am also having problems with those giving names in one of my lines. Hope I can help. Can someone tell me about the prison in Memphis mentioned in this article, or anything else about this article? In the "Confederate Veteran", published in Nashville, TN., December, 1901,an article written by A H McAlister, New Albany, Miss, titled "Ballentine's Partisan Rangers": ....".Many other boys were prompted to go to the front and stay because of the treatment their families received by the Federals. Of this class were the McKinney boys of our company, whose father was insulted, robbed of everything, imprisoned, waylaid, and shot by Hurst's band of Tories. Mr McKinney was sent to the "Irwin Block" prison in Memphis, Tenn., because he did not see proper to swear falsely in taking the oath of allegiance. However, the officers of the prison released him for $500.00 in cash sent by Dr. Stovall, of Camden, Tenn. The McKinney boys refer to J J (John) and William McKinney. A H McAlister married the McKinney boy's sister, Josephine, after the war. The boy's father was William McKinney. J J McKinney was my grandfather. I will appreciate any help anyone can give me. Sincerely, Dortha Greenlee
Thank you for helping me locate records for J J McKinney and William McKinney. They both served in Co E, Balentine's Regiment, Armstrong's Brigade, Jackson's Div. But, J J (John) Didn't join this unit until May 25, 1863, in west Tennessee. However, in my grandmother's application for a widow's pension, she stated he was in the Confedracy from 1861-1865. We know he served a part of his time under General Nathan Bedford Forest. I saw somewhere on this list (I think I'm correct) that there was a unit called the Scouts for Nathan Bedford Forest. I'm curious if he could have been with them before he joined the Partisan Rangers under Balentine. This unit I have mentioned belonged to Mississippi, I understand. Again, thank you for your trouble. Sincerely, Dortha Greenlee
Could you please look about Confederate Soldiers from TN and see if you find John (J J) McKinney and also his brother, William McKinney? They lived in Lincoln Co., TN. Thank you, Dortha Greenlee
