    1. [TNROANE] Census 2000
    2. Hello List, This article was in the Cleveland Plain Dealer this morning. I thought it was interesting and may be helpful to the people with short forms...alas I have the 53 pager..I'm not answering all the questions , they should have sent me the short one. Pass it along:You can file your census on line by Jerry Daniel Reed One of the best kept secrets of this census gathering season is that people can file their census form via the Internet , unless you got the long form. The one out of every six households that get the long form must still file by paper. The U. S. Census Bureau added the electronic filing option late in the game---too late to adequately publicize it, said Census official Jack Evans. Nowhere on the census forms mailed to 119 million American households does it even mention the Internet option. "I think they wanted to make sure it was flawless" before proceeding , Evans said. But, for the computer-savvy, the process is simple and can save licking the envelope and a trip to the mailbox. First, call up the Web page at http://www.2000.census.gov which will fetch a menu offering this option: 'See if your paper form can be filled out by the Internet." Be sure to hang onto the barcoded form delivered to your specific mailing address ,for that contains a needed to sign in to file electronically . Evans said the same concern about security and privacy of personal information crops up as with paper filing, so the Census Bureau uses a double encryption process to guard against unauthorized access to the census information provided. Because online filing is being publicized so late, John Thompson , director of census operations, said the Census Bureau expected only 7 million of 115 million households to file electronically. Ten years from now, though they expect a radically different story. Evans envisions mailing postcards to all households in 2010 , allowing residents to choose between requesting the traditional paper form to be mailed or logging onto the Internet to complete the census. Those who haven't already mailed in the form , they may still file electronically until April 15. Milly ^i^ Genealogists have no Census.....
