The East Tennessee Historical Society is hosting a free workshop with Tony Burroughs, one of the nation’s leading experts on African American genealogy, and the recent author of Black Roots: A Beginners Guide to Tracing the African American Family Tree. The workshop will be held at the East Tennessee History Center in downtown Knoxville (600 Market Street), on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will cover a variety of topics: “Researching Vital Records,” “Tracing African Americans in Cities and Towns,” “Problem Solving in African American Genealogy,” and “Out of the Mouth of Slaves.” The topics will touch on a variety of subjects including census research, oral histories of slaves, finding new sources for research and similar topics. Tony Burroughs is an internationally known genealogist, and author, who teaches genealogy at Chicago State University. He lectures throughout the United States and Canada on all aspects of genealogy. He is the author of Black Roots: A Beginners Guide to Tracing the African American Family Tree. He is a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association (FUGA) and was also awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Genealogical Society. The East Tennessee Historical Society, headquartered in Knoxville, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the state of Tennessee. Founded in 1834, ETHS is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting the history of East Tennessee.
