Hi My great grand father Justus Higbee died in Oliver Springs, Roane County, Tennessee on July 25 1910. What newspaper might have carried his obituary? I called the Oliver Springs and Rockwood libraries but they have nothing. Pat
Do you have a child interested in family history? Would you like to encourage a child in your family to explore his or her heritage? You can help nurture the budding family historian in your family at this year's East Tennessee Historical Society History Camp. The camp will be held July 8-11, 2002, at the East Tennessee History Center in downtown Knoxville. At the camp, kids will enjoy learning methods to research their family tree, such as talking to older relatives, using original records, visiting cemeteries and libraries, and touring history museums. Each child participant is invited to bring along an adult family member to help them dig their roots. The ETHS Family Tree Camp provides families with an activity they can do together not just during the camp, but for years to come. Part of the fun of genealogy is the interaction between generations as young people interview older relatives and hear the stories and events that have become part of a familys history. Help us plant the seeds of historic interest in tomorrow's generation. For more information about this year's camp and how you and a child in your family can participate together, visit the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org Sincerely, Shane Rhyne East Tennessee Historical Society www.east-tennessee-history.org

Hi, Thanks Francis. I will try and get over to Rockwood this Fall and check out the library. I am in Murphy NC. so it shouldn't be a bad trip. William~~~~
Mr Sharp, the Rockwood library might have copies of the old papers on microfilm. Roots of Roane County TN here is a good Roane Co. site. Frances
Thanks everyone for the history and information on Rockwood. I just found out that a fellow telephone equipment installer worked on installing the new switching office in Rockwood in the early 1950s. To bad I didn't get that assignment. I would still like to find out if there are any copies of the old newspapers available. Like the Roane Co. News.
Thanks Jamey!!! I could not remember all the history when I was sending the note. Cardiff was a booming railroad town in the 1800's and early 1900's. I can remember as a child visiting relatives there and going to the butcher shop before going home. It was almost a ghost town by 1960. And today is only a few homes and a business or two. The K-Mart that is in the process of closing and the new Super-Wal-Mart were the merchants in that area today. On the new road of course, the old Cardiff road was almost impassable in places a few years ago. Today Cardiff may be incorporated into either or both Rockwood and / or Harriman. Depending on which end of the community your visiting. She was second wife of Medlin Johnson DUNHAM: they were married in 1835 in Warren Co TN. First wife was Nancy Louisa JOHNSON. I believe Nancy and Elizabeth were cousins. But, who were Elizabeth's parents? Do you have JOHNSONS in Roane Co. about this time? If so, perhaps we can pick each other's brains. Have considerable info on Nancy's parents, who were William Johnson (b. 1774-77 & d. 15 Jan 1815 at Battle of New Orleans) and wife Sarah, last name maybe BEAN. Also, brother to William JOHNSON: John JOHNSON (b. 1780-90-d. 1854 MO). John is my direct line ancestor. That could have been Rockwood, Tn where the body was taken as Rockwood is between Cardiff and Chattanooga. There is the Roane Co News and Rockwood Times, both probably being published at that time. Roots of Roane County TN or www.tnroane.com/
Hello List, I am searching for information on a railroad accident that happened at Cardiff, Tn. Sept. 6, 1900. A brakeman fell from the train and was run over and killed. The newspaper in Chatt. said that the body was carried to Rockwell and returned to Chatt.by train. Does anyone know of any newspaper in the area that may have carried the story or any other records that may be available concerning this accident. This man was my grandfather William L. Sharpe he was employed by the Cincinnati Southern Railroad (now the Norfork Southern). He was living in Chatt. at the time of his death.
Hi Pat, I just went through the Cemeteries of Roane County, Tennessee of Harriman, Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs Vol II. There was no Justus Higbee. I ordered the book a week ago and the cost was $30.00 and they only have a few left. I had emailed the person in charge. Sincerely, Lorraine Strohkirch PatriciaDanby@aol.com wrote: > Hi > > Where do I write or call to order the Cemetery Book with Oliver Springs > Cemetery in it? > > I am looking for my great grandfather Justus Higbee. If you see me before I do, please ask me to wait until I return! (unknown)

Hi Where do I write or call to order the Cemetery Book with Oliver Springs Cemetery in it? I am looking for my great grandfather Justus Higbee. It is reported that he died in Oliver Springs in 1910 but he is not on the death rolls for that or any other year that I could find. Pat Danby
