There is a relationship between the Short and Parks families. Miller E. [Easley] Parks m Manerva VanPelt and had 2 children Joseph and Rebecca. (Manerva died and Miller 2m Sarah A. Robbs and had 5 more children. The question had been what happened to the first two Parks children? It was found: Miller and Minerva had two children, Joseph and Rebecca. Joseph, named for his father¹s father, was born 1848, 2 years after the marriage. In 1850, when Joseph would have been 2 years old, there is a Joseph Parks living with George W. Short in Rhea Co, TN. QUESTION: Why was 2 yr. old Joseph living with a relative? [I believe mother had died.] There was a Joseph Parks in the 1860 Roane Co, TN Mortality Schedule, age 13. [b =1848] He died from Congestion and Chill. He is probably first born of Miller Parks, as marriage of Miller and Manerva was 31 Mar 1846. AND There is a Washington Short who married Eliza Parks, dau of Robert Parks (sister of above mentioned Miller E. Parks.). They had children: Robert, Miller, Buck, George, Alex Christopher, James, Rebecca, Charlotte, and Sarah. Wash Short died aft 1877. In Hinds Baptist Church abstracted records, it lists Eliza and Wash Short as ³dismissed² as of Oct 1877... Hope that gives you a clue! The 1880 census I have lists the John H. Short family we've been discussing: 1880 Census, Rockwood, Roane County, Tennessee, page 390C: John Short, Self, M, M, W, 35, Engineer, TN, TN, TN. Rhoda Short, Wife, F, M, W, 36, Keeping House, TN, TN, TN. George Short, Son, M, S, W, 13, At Home, TN, TN, TN. Fredric Short, Son, M, S, W, 3, At Home, TN, TN, TN. I have no record of Fredric after this. Also, the obituary for George Short above states: George W. Short was born 13 August 1867 in Tennessee, and died 04 October 1937 in Johnston, PA. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Sharon, Mercer County, PA. Survived by: three daughters: Mrs. B. D. Kiningham, Danville, Ill.., Mrs. Isaac Barnes, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Mrs. P. Martin Kleindienst, Granite City, Ill.; and one son, G. W. Short, Jr.; a step-son, Clavin Clark,, Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister, Mrs. L. L. Lyell of Tennessee. The Kleindienst listed is my grandmother, but I have no record of George's sister, the "Mrs. L. L. Lyell of Tennessee" (I wish the early 1900's were enlightened enough to list the woman's name and not her husband's :)). This sister was either born later tha1 1880, which is a possibility, based on Frederic's age, or Frederic might actually be a girl (Frederica?) and the census guy botched it. I thought I saw a post that said 1890 is not available, but might 1900 have anything? John H. would only have been 55 in 1900 and should have been living either at home, or with neighboring family (if still alive, of course). Can't find George in 1900 census in PA (he moved here in 1889), but have him in 1910, 1920 and 1930. His parents were not living with him in 1910. So, they were either both dead, living with the sister, another relative or in their own home. But, I can't track this family from 1880 until I pick up George in 1910. Any hints? Thanks in advance!! Eric
While we are on the subject of SHORT family, I will post some notes I made during a search for Holland folks (not very successfully). I strongly suspect Mary Short is sister to Willis Short. When they arrived in Roane County, and whether they were the only ones in their family to travel from SC, I have not determined. But since they live close together, I feel confident they are related. I have not really worked on the SHORT family, and would be interested in sharing any information as to the parents of Mary and Willis. There seem to be two William Hollands in early Roane, one moving soon to Morgan Co. Some of my notes. ++++ WILLIAM HOLLAND was born Bet. 1760 - 1770, and died Bef. 1840 in Roane Co. TN. He married MARY SHORT April 09, 1808 in Roane Co. TN. She was born Abt. 1792 in SC. (In view of the age difference, there is always the possibility that this William Holland had a previous wife, and of course, other children) 1823 Capt. Ken, your posting is a good example of how researchers should double check everything they find on the Internet against public records. Indeed, Geo. W. Short is found in the 12th District of 1860 Roane. I carelessly looked at the date - 14th August - instead of the District. Incidentally, listed next door to Geo. W. Short in 1860 is Rob't. P. Short 21 TN farming, and Almira T. 20. One would assume he is the son shown in 1850 census, newly married? I did not find the marriage records for Robert on my CD. However, I did find a marriage for Nancy R. Short to George W. Frazier in 7 Nov. 1860 Roane. Recall this man, 25-year old physician, was living in the household of George W. and Eliza Short. Nancy R. fits with the 1850 Rhea census, but seems not to be listed in 1860?? Poor thing--they overlooked her. Or does the film show her? I have a page on my website about Roane ironworks. http://www.roanetn.com/ironwk.htm It is copied from Roots of Roane County, TN by Snyder E. Roberts. There is no mention of Gordon, and I would be pleased to add this pioneer to the page if you would like to submit some data. Eric, I have looked at the SHORT family a little, in an effort to determine the parents of Mary Short who married William Holland in 1808 Roane. She was from SC. I did not have any success in finding her parents, but I SUSPECT she is sister to Willis Short, born abt. 1796 in SC. Anyway, in 1860 Roane, Willis Short is listed in the 11th District, as 64, wife Nancy 59, and some young adut children--oldest 22. (#1529-1423) He has big bunch of kids in 1850 census. In the 14th District (1664-1538) is George W. Short 43 TN, farming & tanning & Iron-making. He has wife Eliza 41 TN, and Rebecca 16, JOHN 14, Geo, 11, Alx. 8, Chrisman 6, Lottie 5, Mary 3, James 1, and also listed with them is Geo. W. Frazier 25, physician. I can't find this family in 1850 Roane. I do not find a marriage record for this couple, but in 1870 Roane 13th District, #318-314, John Short 23, keeper furnace, Rheoda 25, and G. W. 3. If you have not checked out the George W. Short family, I think you might want to do so. I also suggest you try to find some history of Rockwood. It is interesting little town. Hello, I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, George W. Short. He was born 8/13/1867. What I know of him is from an article written in February of 1890: He is but 22 years of age but his head is planted squarely upon his young shoulders. George W. Short first saw the light near Knoxville, Tenn. He was born on a farm where he spent his time until he was 12 or 14 years of age, when he began his apprenticeship in the Roland Iron Company at Rockwood, Tenn. I know that Rockwood is about 50 miles from Knoxville, so it's possible that this Pittsburgh, PA paper called that "near Knoxville". The 1880 census has one George Short of the right age: 1880 Census, Rockwood, Roane County, Tennessee, page 390C: John Short, Self, M, M, W, 35, Engineer, TN, TN, TN. Rhoda Short, Wife, F, M, W, 36, Keeping House, TN, TN, TN. George Short, Son, M, S, W, 13, At Home, TN, TN, TN. Fredric Short, Son, M, S, W, 3, At Home, TN, TN, TN. He also had a sister, likely born after 1880, listed in his obit as surviving him. The obit lists her as Mrs. L.L. Lyell of Tennessee. I can't find this John Short anywhere else in census data. Can anyone give me any advice on how to track him or any information available? Thanks.

Phyllis, Here is what I could pull out of the 1830 census for Roane & Knox Cos. for both BURNETT & LUTTRELL (& variations). I hope this may help you start to figure out the parents of Silas & Stacy (BURNETT) LUTTRELL. Good luck with your search. Ken Parks Only Silas LUTTRELL listed in the 1830 TN census is: Silas LUTTRELL-Knox Co. page 323--110101-201101 To break that down: 1 male under 5 years old 1 male 5-10 0 males 10-15 1 male 15-20 0 males 20-30 1 male 30-40 2 females under 5 0 females 5-10 1 female 10-15 1 female 15-20 0 females 20-30 1 female 30-40 The only LUTTRELL listed in 1830 Roane Co. census: George LUTTRELL-p 10--200201-112001 (Same age range as Silas, not likely the father) LUTTERELL listings in Roane Co.: Nelson LUTTERELL-p 47--00010001-0101101 (Nelson 50-60 yrs old) Mason LUTTERELL-p 48--0000001-2322001 (Mason 40-50) Martin LUTTERELL-p 55--1011001-0001101 (Martin 40-50) Of these, only Nelson would be old enought to be father of Silas. LUTTRELLs in Knox Co. 1830 census: Silas LUTTRELL-p 323 (see above) Edward LUTTRELL-p 325--0000000001-0000000001 (both 70-80 yrs old) John LUTTRELL-p 328--10001-20001001 Martha LUTTRELL-p 329--0001-0010001 (Martha 40-50) James LUTTRELL-p 355--1000100001-0000100001 (both 70-80 yrs old) William LUTTRELL-p 362--01010001-0111001 (William 50-60) Lewis LUTTRELL-p 362--2000001-12101 (Lewis 40-50) [note: William & Lewis listed next door to each other] Elizabeth LUTTRELL-p 394--10012-10002001 (50-60 yrs old) John LUTTRELL-p 394--000110001-000010001 (both 60-70 yrs old) [note: Elizabeth & John listed 12 households apart on same page] Jackson LUTTRELL-p395--10001-0001 Those listed above with age ranges COULD possibly be old enough to be father or mother of Silas. BURNETT: ROANE Co. 1830 census: Carter BARNETT-p 56--110010001-1002001 (Carter 60-70) Moses BURNET-p 48--00100001-0012101 (Moses 50-60) William BURNETT-p 15--00001-0100100001 Samuel BURNETT-p 26--100001-120001 Hiram BURNETT-p 36--20001-01001 Jefferson BURNETT-p 45--21002-00001 James BURNETT-p 61--000000001-000000001 (Both 60-70) Of the above, only Moses & James are old enough to be father of Stacy (BURNETT) LUTTRELL. KNOX Co. 1830 census: Judah BARNETT-p 318--002-00010001 Jane BARNETT-p 359--00001-0001001 (Jane 40-50) William BARNETT-p 394--00001000101-00020001 (William 60-70 or 80-90) John BARNETT-p 395--00001-10001 [note: some of these BARNETTs are on the same page or near other BURNETTs and LUTTRELLS--always a possibility transcriber misread name] Jeremiah BURNETT-p 335--110001-10001 Mabel BURNETT-p 355--01001-210001 Joseph BURNETT-p 358--00001-10001 Howel BURNETT-p 361--10101-10001 Samuel BURNETT-p 387--00002-10001 Zachariah BURNETT-p 388--001001-111 Lemuel BURNETT-p 388--020001-20001001 Judah BURNETT-p 388--000111-00001001 [note: Zachariah 6 households away from Lemuel/Lemuel & Judah next door to each other] Elisha BURNETT-p 395--00001-10001 None of the male BURNETTS in Knox Co. are old enough to be father of Stacy (BURNETT) LUTTRELL. Looking at all the above, Moses BURNET (Ro-p 48) & Nelson LUTTERELL (Ro-p 47) are both old enough to be the parents of the couple in question and are living near each other, though it's hard to estimate proximity from page numbers alone, but I think this is a good possibility to start with. Do the names Moses or Nelson turn up in children or grandchildren of Silas & Stacy?
That is Stacy Burnett married to Silas Luttrell on that date. Bondsmen were Silas Luttrell and Moses Burnett. I believe Silas died about 1851 in Roane County. about 1800-1860's or so. then the family moved down to MO. Here is a story on James "tennessee Jim" Massey that was given to me from another researcher and a little of the family outline. Rachell History and Families of Laclede County (2000) first one MASSEY - James S. "Tennessee Jim" Massey (Nov. 15, 1815, NC-Sep. 30, 1885, Laclede County, MO) was called "Tennessee Jim" because he walked from TN. He married Charolotte Snow (1815, TN-May 11, 1897, MO). Jime's family farmed in Roane County, TN. Jim was a handyman, great sportsman; was physically very strong. He went to town every Saturday and entered boxing, wrestling and relay matches. For a long time, he was the local champion. One farmer wanted the championship title for his son; he set up a boxing match with Jim. The son used brass knuckles to increase his chances of winning. Although injured during the bout, Jim fought back and the other person was killed during the fight. The farmer was a friend of the sheriff, the fight was uncalled unfair, and they wanted to hang Jim for murder. Jim broke out of jail and headed for MO, where he had relatives. When he arrived at the mile-wide Mississippi River, he started to swim to the other side. Two sheriffs who had followed him, picked him up in a boat. On their way to shore, Jim fought the sheriffs and capsized the boat. He swam back in handcuffs across the Mississippi River to MO. Part of the boat was later found, and people in TN thought Jim and the sheriffs had drowned. Jim continued to Wright County, MO, where his relatives lived. By using flint rocks, he was able to saw off the hancuff chain, which held his wrists together. He slept during the day and walked at night, using the North Star for navigation. He was in constant fear of being pursued by sheriffs and was concerned about getting food. Another problem was the constant presence of wild animals. There were many Indian tribes in that area. Some were friendly, but Jim avoided all of them. One morning he came upon a farmhouse with children playing in the yard. He was friendly with the children; the farmer helped remove the handcuffs. He gave Jim a job in the blacksmith shop. Jim left a few days later. The farmer gave him food, a gun and knife for protection and hunting. After many exhausting days, he arrived at a stream and could go no farther. A 12-year old boy found him; Jim swore the boy to secrecy. The boy steal food from his parents. With the boy's help, Jim was able to rest a few days. He slept in a hollow tree at night. It was truly a miracle that he survived and lived a normal life for many years afterward. He got to Wright County and his relatives. They sent a message to his wife in TN, who was sick with worry over him. She was overjoyed to that he was alive and well. She and her nine children traveled from Roane County, TN to MO in a covered wagon to join him. They homesteaded a farm and raised their children close to Cobbs Creek in Wright County near McBride Cemetery.
