    3. I humbly suggest that, even more important than the symbols and mottos of our country, is the Constitution it was founded on. Its defenders also have a website and a petition. http://www.petitiononline.com/sabene/petition.html I'm sorry for being off topic. --Alison Clement On Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at 07:22 PM, Gloria & Bruce Wilson wrote: > > WePledge.com is trying to secure ten million signatures for the > Constitutional Amendment to save the Pledge of Allegiance and our > National Motto. 3. JOHN SILVEY m. Rhoda Cunningham in 1820 Roane, and they had William Silvey (b ca 1821) who married (1843) Angeline NELSON (b ca 1826) Rhoda died and John Silvey married secondly in 1839, Mary NELSON (b ca 1822). Both daughters of John E. Nelson. So, at the approximate age of 21, Mary Nelson Silvey became step mother-in-law to her sister, Angeline. William Silvey was her stepson AND brother-in-law. The children of William and Angeline Nelson Silvey were nieces/nephews of their step-grandmother (Mary). Wonder what they called her? The children of Mary Nelson Silvey were half-siblings to the children of Rhoda C. Silvey, except William was also uncle by marriage. John E. Nelson, father of Angeline and Mary, was father-in-law to John Silvey AND his son, William Silvey. John Nelson was grandfather to the children of John Silvey and Mary Nelson, and the children of William Silvey and Angeline Nelson-but not the other children of John & Rhoda. (step-grandfather?) Chapter II John Silvey is thought to be the son of William Silvey, Sr. and first wife, unknown. Rhoda Cunningham is said to be daughter of Valentine Cunningham and his first wife. Valentine Cunningham married secondly to Frances Lahton (widow). After his death, it appears Frances Lahton Cunningham married William Silvey Sr. in 1839. At this point, Frances' step-daughter, Rhoda is surely deceased. But Frances would be step mother to John Silvey, and I suppose, step-grandmother to all his children-both by Rhoda and Mary. If there could be such a thing, Frances would be double step-mother to the children of John and Rhoda. (sorta) William Silvey, Sr. then became father or grandfather to the whole clan, plus he was father in-law to Mary Nelson, and grandfather-in-law to her sister. And he was step-father to the children of Frances and Valentine Cunningham. Chapter III Valentine Cunningham and Frances had: Lucinda Cunningham married John DAVIS. Cynthia Cunningham married Nathan DAVIS. Children of James Davis. Another child of James Davis was Polly Ann DAVIS who married Franklin B. NELSON, brother to Mary and Angeline. Franklin B. Nelson would be brother-in-law to John Silvey, John Davis and Nathan Davis. Their mother-in-law was Frances L. Cunningham Silvey. After her marriage, William Silvey Sr. was their step-father-in-law too. (Wm. Sr. died before 1850) The Cunningham girls, above, were half-sisters to Rhoda Silvey. They would be sisters-in-law to Franklin Nelson, but not to Mary and Angeline. I can't figure all the relationships from there, but it gets into half-niece/nephew, etc. And I may have this wrong. My head hurts. Thank God for genealogy software! PatMcDonald

    3. I would appreciate help finding a James C. MATTHEWS or a John C. MATTHEWS on the 1870 census. I am trying to verify his given name. In 1850 he is John C. and in 1880 he James C. He is on the 1850 Roane Co as a 10 year old living with his parents Talton and Rhoda MATTHEWS. On the 1880 Meigs Co census he is 36 years old living next to his parents. The right James C. or John C. would have a dau. named Harriet abt. 3 years old in 1870. This surname is often spelled MATHIS, MATHEWS, etc. Your assistance would be appreciated. 3. Frances, Thanks for sharing your neighbor's memories of Eagle Furnace. I have since discovered a newspaper article from the 1920s on the Roane County Heritage Commission website that stated the Eagle Furnace was built around 1841-42 by Robert CRAVENS, a nephew of the George GORDON we were speaking of earlier. That article, by the way, can be found at: http://www.roanetnheritage.com/research/historical%20articles/mcelwee/12.htm Again, thanks for the info! Ken Parks

    1. [TNROANE] Eagle Furnace
    2.   The last road turning left off of Hwy. #27 south of Rockwood,  just before the Whites Creek Bridge is Eagle Furnace Road.  Back on it is the area called Eagle Furnace and where the old iron works once stood.  My neighbor (b 1902 d 2002) told me her greatgrandfather  was a teamster for the furnace.  He hauled pig iron from Eagle Furnace to Nashville in a wagon with a six horse team. It took six weeks to make the round trip.  Pig iron was the load to Nashville and supplies were brought back on the return trip. The route to Nashville was across the mountain where Hwy #70 is now located .  Much of the area where the Eagle Furnace stood is covered by Watts Bar Lake. Eagle Furnace is in the 5th district of Roane Co. which is the old 12th district, and was just across Whites Creek from Rhea Co. My neighbor mentioned nothing about the name of the owner or operator of Eagle Furnace. She might not have known his name, or it just didn't enter into her story. Frances Roane Co. TN
