    3. Am wondering if there are persons from Roane County living in the Western North Carolina area. I live at Lake Junaluska, west of Asheville and close to Maggie Valley. Would like to hear from you. My Long family roots go back to 1910 in Rockwood when my grandparents, William Sherman (Joe) and Rutha Jane (Jenny) Guffey Long moved there from Kentucky. On the Guffey side, Richard and Phoebe Adams Guffey lived below Kingston from ca 1825-1830 before moving back to Clinton and Wayne counties, Kentucky. They also lived in Morgan County for a while where his brother, William Guffey remained. Enjoy all the queries and messages. Allen E. Long

    3. Hi Neighbor Mary and I live in the FM 1960 area (NW suburban Houston) Am not sure what you mean by Roane County Family History webpage? In my personal opinion, these are the most helpful sites for general information (in other words, not on a specific family). Not necessarily in any particular order: The Roane Heritage Commission site has general information of all kinds, but very little on family *trees*. It is packed with info. Books for sale by Bailey Publishing are best available! Trust me. Darleen Trent offers research services. I have used her, and been very pleased. Jamey McLaughlin has put in many, many volunteer hours to make this site available to us. We are so fortunate to have a forward-thinking County Historian, Robert Bailey! The TNGenRoane site has general information, and especially good for queries. New stuff being added. Am sure you are familiar with it. My Roots of Roane site is mostly about Families, and a few misc. general articles and links. I have a list of books offered by the Roane Gen. Society. Their 1850 census book is best book you can find (still my opinion). Sandy Eskew has a lot of Families, and other info on her site. GenForum has a TN and a Roane County query site that I think is excellent. I especially like the surname boards at GenForum. Family Tree Maker has a Query site, and I don't much like the way it is arranged, but it is certainly worth looking at from time to time. I think it is called Genealogy.com now? And I have the Oliver Springs Historical Society too, if that area is of interest, but again, no Families. They do sell two of Snyder Roberts' books, a VANN book, and some other things. Most of the above have links to each other. There are a number of excellent personal home pages devoted to one or more Families. I link them when I know about them, and think there is enough about Roane County to be of interest to my visitors. Believe Sandy does too. If looking for early settlers in particular, one should not overlook Knox, Anderson, Morgan, Rhea counties--all of which have good information either on the GenWeb site, or linked to it. Various degrees of Family info there. Edna Clack has great site, as do several others. The Anderson Co. site links to several family pages. There are certainly other sites, such as Cyndislist, etc., that have information about Roane, but as far as I can tell, they mostly link back to the above-mentioned sites. Couldn't hurt to check them out though. And don't forget about FamilySearch. It is my understanding the SW Point DAR is in the process of making a new web site. They may have some info on their patriots, which would be nice. The lady who is going to do the site is highly skilled and qualified in web building, so I look forward to seeing what she publishes. For more recent times, the Obit section of Knoxville News and the Oak Ridger are worth checking every so often. The Roane County News has less info, but also worth a peek. (I was just looking at the Oak Ridger yesterday, and saw an article about at explosion at Y-12 that was scary. I hope all that turns out okay. ) And, if you are lucky enough to go there, as Mary did, try to save time for the McClung library in Knoxville too. The online site does not have any Family info that I have found though. And send me photos! :-) Hope I haven't left something out. If so, it's just another Senior Moment. 2. Pat, I used to live in Anderson and Fentress Counties. My father was a coal miner .We lived at Fork Mountain and Devonia (Moore's Coal Camp)in Anderson Co. About every three months if we had extra money , my Dad would take us over Petros Mountain to Petros and Oliver Springs. We would have a bowl of beef stew(it was the best) at a restraunt near the train station. Then we would head back and stop at Petros and buy an orange pineapple ice cream cone. We would stop at twilight time and eat our ice cream on top of Petros Mountain and look out over the mountain at all the little lights from people's houses and Brushy Mountain State Prison .I still love looking at lights. Times were rough and hard , but I treasure those moments. I think I'll have an ice cream........... Milly^i^ "This is the Season ....with a reason

    3. Tina, the problem with this is that in the pension application of Mrs. Barnett, she says they married in 1799. And that doesn't allow for a daughter born 1780, or other children who were born in the earlier 1790s. It could all work IF there was an error, and she meant to say 1789, and Elizabeth was about 16 when she married. Otherwise, there must have been a first wife for Carter Barnett, which is what makes us all crazy. Census information is notoriously wrong, so we can't always count on that--but sometimes it is all we have to go by. I am thinking it is important to try to determine the ages of all of Carter's children, in order to accurately reflect any particular line. If anyone has any documentation on any of the kids, I hope they will share it.
