I would like to know about your Nannie M. Cates when you find out. Trying to find out how the Cates and Lovelace were kin. I know that Katherine White that married Taylor Lovelace in AR. was born In Roane Co. TN. ( death certificate) and that in her picture was a picture of Aunt Jane and Uncle Sam Cates. Need marriage lookup for William M. Littleton to Nannie Unknown in or around Roane County, TN. They were married about 1900. Would also like Nannie's maiden name if known. Known children are Ralph, Hazel, Mary, Addie, Charles, John. Thanks, Wanda
Wanda, Knock me off my chair!!!!!! My great aunt gave me OODLES of info. about 2 years ago and I am just now getting around to looking at it. She had a type written list of headstones from the "Allen Cemetary", I assume at Dogwood, Roane Co, TN. Not being a local, I'm not sure about that. Two of the names I looked at JUST TONIGHT were William M Littleton and Nannie. This is what my aunt had: William M Littleton - June 5, 1874 Nannie M Cates - Nov 5, 1900 Would love to know IF and HOW they fit in with my family. From that area, I am doing these families:ALLEN, TINNEL, YARNELL. Please get back to me if we can help each other. Sheila in WA state
Hi, I was just looking over the URL that Ken Parks posted and found some books (Listed below) that look like they might have my family included. At least the dates covered were the dates my Reuben and Olive HURTT family lived in Harriman..(1885-1910) Is there anyone out there who might have these books or know of a way to get them on loan in an Arizona institution? Last time I tried to get a loan through Tennesssee Library, they said they would not allow the book to be loaned out of state? Any help, advice or information you might share would be appreciated. A special thanks to Ken for sharing his findings. Happy Hunting, Maureen Donovan, William F., Jr. "Real estate speculation in Cardiff & Harriman, 1890-1893." THQ 14 (1955), pp. 253-256. Try asking someone here in Tennessee for a lookup . I'm sure they wouldn't mind doing a fellow researcher a favor or two ! Frankie

Debra, Did a little searching and came up with this from the TN State Library and Archives website--now we both know the answer!--Ken DESCRIPTIONS OF CENSUS AND INDEXES 1790, 1800 and 1810: Tennessee became a state in 1796. The territorial census schedules and the 1800 census were lost or destroyed. The 1810 census of Tennessee was also lost, except for Grainger and Rutherford counties, which have been indexed. 1820: This census is incomplete and most East Tennessee counties are missing. The missing counties are marked with an * on the following list. Jackson's alphabetical state-wide index lists the heads-of-household, plus a series of numbers indicating the sex and approximate age of family members. The age categories for males, given in order, are: under 10, 10-15, 16-18, 16-25, 26-44, and over 45. To the right of the first hyphen are five similar columns for females in the following age categories: under 10, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, and over 45. Following the second hyphen is a column detailing number of slaves in the household and a column detailing number of free blacks in the household. Another index, by Bentley, only shows the heads-of-household with a county and page number for each. ABBREVIATIONS USED FOR TENNESSEE COUNTIES 1820, 1840-1870 Each census index entry provides the county name and census page number. This list will help you identify county names which have been abbreviated by the indexer. The year the county was created is also listed. * Indicates missing from 1820 census. Debra, Perhaps someone more knowlegeable out there will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I've been told the 1820 census records for Roane were destroyed in a fire. At any rate, I don't think there are any 1820 Roane census records available--if there are, I'd sure love to know about it! Ken Parks
Hello all, Does someone on this list have the 1820 census for Roane? Thanks! Debra
Looking for ancestors of John Robert Pugh, born in TX May 1862. His mother was born in AL (don't know where) and his dad in TN (don't know where). He married Lucinda Jane Payton in AR 4/7/1889 and died in AR 12/16/1900. Sure would like to get past this brick wall. Melba Pugh
Sandy Fine Thank you for the response. Yes, believe John Winton donated land, etc. for the church. I understand there was a 200th anniversary in recent years...somewhere's in my files I have an invitation. -- Peggy [email protected] ICQ 31827094 Maw Peggy @ AOL IM [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] http://homepages.go.com/~mawp/ I'm getting paid to surf, read e-mails, play games, etc. and will be happy to share info on how you can, too!
Peggy, I'm not a Winton descendant. My husband's g-grandparents, Daniel and Mary Jane (Greer) Fine are buried at Martel Cemetery along with Daniel's brother and his some of his family. The church and cemetery are located 2 or 3 miles from where we live. I believe it was Rev. John Winton that settled in the Muddy Creek / Martel area and started with camp ground meetings that lead to the establishment of Muddy Creek/Martel Church. Mike, I believe the Muddy Creek Cemetery you are looking for is now known as Martel Cemetery and is located by Martel (formerly known as Muddy Creek) Methodist Church in Lenoir City , Loudon County. This area was in Roane County before Loudon County was established in 1870. The church was founded by the Winton family and the cemetery is located next to the church. My husband's g-grandparents are buried there. If you will tell me the direction you are coming from, (Nashville, Chattanooga, NC, etc.??) I will give you directions.
