Hello List, I recieved today from FTM(FamilyTreeMaker) a flyer with a CD for Land Records in KY 1774-1924 for $29.99 CD#650. To those researching KY it may prove helpful. Says there are 100,000 individuals listed with >the # of Acres>Entry Date of the record>Landholder's residence>Nearest watercourse on to the landholding>Information on Military service (for those individuals who were granted land based upon their service in the Revolutionary or French Wars I think I will order it... East Tennessee Historical Society Hosts Genealogy Conference and Family Reunion Celebration The sons and daughters of Tennessee's pioneer founders are heading home this Memorial Day weekend. The East Tennessee Historical Society (ETHS) is hosting a weekend-long genealogy conference and family history fair, May 26-28, in Knoxville, Tennessee. A highlight of the conference will be a "family reunion" of members of the society's family heritage project, First Families of Tennessee (FFT)the debut of a new First Families of Tennessee book. Guests attending the conference will face a wide variety of options and activities, including a two-day genealogy conference featuring national and regional experts, a family history fair and street party in downtown Knoxville, motorcoach tours of historic East Tennessee sites, and a "family reunion" dinner at the home of Tennessee's first governor, John Sevier. The genealogy conference, held at Knoxville's Hilton Hotel, May 26-27, will examine Southeastern "roots and routes" - focusing on our ancestors and their migrations into and out of East Tennessee. Guest speakers will discuss a variety of topics including Scots-Irish research, Cherokee genealogy, Tennessee land records, Tennesseans in the California gold rush, frontier religion, and more. Experts will also discuss research topics in states associated with Tennessee's earliest residents, including Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Descendants of Tennessee's first families will celebrate the publication of the East Tennessee Historical Society's newest book, First Families of Tennessee: A Register of Early Settlers and Their Descendants. The book, a tribute to the ancestors enrolled in the FFT project, will include names and vital stats of the more than 2,000 ancestors enrolled in the project, along with a registry of FFT members. The book will be unveiled in a special ceremony and will be available for purchase at the history conference. Guest speakers will include Dr. George K. Schweitzer, Charles Sherrill of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Russell Baker, Robert Davis, historian Walter Durham, and other experts on a variety of genealogical and historical topics. In addition to the multi-track genealogy conference, ETHS will host a genealogy and family history fair featuring mini-workshops for beginners, vendor displays, tours of local historic sites, carriage and trolley rides in downtown Knoxville, and living history demonstrations. The fair will also include a downtown street party outside the historical society's headquarters with live music, dramatic performances, historic reenactments, children's activities and more. While the theme of the weekend will be built around a family reunion of First Families of Tennessee members, attendance at all the events is open to anyone with an interest in history and genealogy. The First Families of Tennessee was founded by the East Tennessee Historical Society in 1993 to honor the state's early residents and to recognize their descendants. The program is open to those who can prove descent from a person living in any part of Tennessee by 1796. Housed in Knoxville's Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection, the First Families of Tennessee files provide a one-of-a-kind resource for historical and genealogical research. For additional information about ETHS, the First Families of Tennessee project, or the upcoming genealogy conference and First Families of Tennessee reunion, visit the historical society's website at www.east-tennessee-history.org # # #

Jim, Thank you for posting the information on William and Nannie. Wanda

This William was the son of David Ragan Littleton and Mary Jane Farmer Littleton, who was my aunt.William had Two sisters and three brothers.I know very little more about them since I am descended from the Farmers. Sheila, In the cemetery listings there is this: Dogwood Cem: Nannie M CATE b. 5 Nov 1900 - d. 1 Apr 1983 Shares Stone with Daniel F. Cate. Daniel F CATE b. 12 Dec 1894 - d. 8 Nov 1964. Notice that the name is CATE not CATES. There are several Cate people listed in the cemetery books. Don't know about the census books. Will check if there is anyone in particular that you need. Wanda
Andrea, I have: Elizabeth Littleton born 26 Sep 1880 (married will Billings). Sallie A. Littleton born Feb 1877 (married an Eblen). Sarah E. Littleton born about 1868. (no spouse) Do you know who she married or who her parents are? Wanda
You wouldn't happen to have a Sarah Elizabeth Littleton 1879 prob. Sheila, When searching thru your info. Keep an eye out for a Robert Cates. After your posting I looked in the 1900 census records and found this. But Nannie is listed as a daughter-in-law. Looks like she was married to Robert Cates when the census was taken. Was there another Nannie Cates? Wanda
Sheila, Our paths cross once again. Thank you so much for the information. I looked in the Roane Co., TN cemetery books for the Allen Cemetery listing and there was no William Littleton or Nannie. However, there are 25 unmarked graves in this cemetery. How wonderful that your great aunt gave you all this information.. She probably knew the William and Nannie were buried there and added their name to this list. Thanks again and good luck with your research. Wanda
Jim, I'll probably end up claiming the first William Littleton (with wife Sarah) that you listed. Knowing how hard it is to read old headstones, I can see how my aunt might have gotten 1892 & 1872 confused. Thanks for the additional information. Sheila
If anyone does have access to the library, could they also check for a death record of my husband's grandfather, WILLIAM BENJAMIN ROSS, who died around 1909/10 but whose death certificate has never been located? He and his family were living around Coalfield, but we also know that his children attended school in Kingston at one point after his death. Just another possibility we don't want to pass up . . . Does anyone have access to holdings in the public library in Kingston? I've been told they may have records there of an undertaker who was in business in Kingston early in the 20th century but who never sent his records to the state archives. Death records of persons he attended perhaps may be found no where else. His name was DeArmond. I am trying to find a record of the death of Martha Jane Green in Kingston in 1923, my great grandmother. Bonnie Fuller Boise, Idaho
Nannie M Cates - Nov 5, 1900 This is all I know about the lady. Puting 2 and 2 together with what Wanda sent about the 1900 census makes me think that Cates is her married name (Wanda listed her as a daughter-in-law to George Cates) I assume Nov 5, 1900 as a death date. She was 22 in 1900 (born Jan 1878 according to the census) and she must have died that year after the census was taken. What do you think? Sheila
Andrea, I have two Littleton people in my data base. JR Littleton who marr. Sarah Jane Allen, who was born 1870 Emaline Littleton who is buried at Oakesdale, WA and marr. Ephraim Miller. Their daughter Sarah Elizabeth Miller b 1855 marr. Richard Tinnel Not much help, am I! Sheila
Wanda, Oops, forgot to turn the page and missed a child. Will list them again. Daniel Cates marr. Mary Jane Allen. Their children: Dan, Charlies, Oma, Oscar, Ernest, & Allen Sheila
Wanda, Oh the list from my aunt are the follow Cates - Mary J Cates - sister (I believe this to be Mary Jane Allen because the dates match exactly and she married Daniel Cates below) Dec 7, 1870 - Aug 22, 1922 Daniel R Cates Dec 12, 1894 - Nov 8, 1946 Nannie M Cates - Nov 5, 1900 between the William Litleton's name and Daniel Cates' name is this one: Sarah - Jan 16, 1892 - April 4, 1946 It's position on the list may mean it was part of the same family and then again, it may just be coincidental. Mary Jane Allen Cates was the sister to my great grandmother. Mary Jane Allen married Dan Cates and they had the following children: Dan who marr. Imogene Gerald Charlie Oma Oscar Ernest That's what little I know about the Cates family. Sheila
