I have just confirmed that Roane County has suffered a tragic historical loss. Last night the Historical Browder Hardware Store in Kingston was completely distroyed by fire. Located at the corner of Race and Kentucky Streets the building was one of the oldest businesses in the area dating from the late 1700's or early 1800's. (I will need to check the date further.) Where many historically famous men have visited, worked or lived in the rooms to rent upstairs. A tragic loss for all of us. Some of my earliest memories as a child are of visiting the store with my family. I remember seeing the local men gathered around a pot-belled stove and playing checkers near the rear door. The warm friendly faces of the Howard and Browder family members as they greated my parents or grandparents as we entered the store. Leota

Hello, I am researching the names CASH, FORD, RENFROW(O, OE,), GIBSON, and ROWDEN in early Roane Co. TN. I am looking for a connection to a James Monroe CASH aka "Monroe" b. 1826 TN. He married Sarah Emilene FORD b. 1827 TN. He went to MO ca. 1848-1860(appears to have moved w/ family members of the above names) came back by 1861 to TN and lived near Ten Mile Region, Meigs Co. TN, right over the Roane Co. border. During the War he enlisted in the 5th TN Cavalry(McKenzie's), Co. B and later Welcker's Cavalry Battalion, both of which I understand were mustered in Roane Co. Other family CASH family members that he was with back in MO are listed as being born in Roane Co. also and appear in the above units, Does anyone have a connection to any of the above names? They would have been in Roane ca. 1810-1850+. Thanks for any help. Sincerely, Christopher D. Cash

Hello List, This article was in the Cleveland Plain Dealer this morning. I thought it was interesting and may be helpful to the people with short forms...alas I have the 53 pager..I'm not answering all the questions , they should have sent me the short one. Pass it along:You can file your census on line by Jerry Daniel Reed One of the best kept secrets of this census gathering season is that people can file their census form via the Internet , unless you got the long form. The one out of every six households that get the long form must still file by paper. The U. S. Census Bureau added the electronic filing option late in the game---too late to adequately publicize it, said Census official Jack Evans. Nowhere on the census forms mailed to 119 million American households does it even mention the Internet option. "I think they wanted to make sure it was flawless" before proceeding , Evans said. But, for the computer-savvy, the process is simple and can save licking the envelope and a trip to the mailbox. First, call up the Web page at http://www.2000.census.gov which will fetch a menu offering this option: 'See if your paper form can be filled out by the Internet." Be sure to hang onto the barcoded form delivered to your specific mailing address ,for that contains a needed to sign in to file electronically . Evans said the same concern about security and privacy of personal information crops up as with paper filing, so the Census Bureau uses a double encryption process to guard against unauthorized access to the census information provided. Because online filing is being publicized so late, John Thompson , director of census operations, said the Census Bureau expected only 7 million of 115 million households to file electronically. Ten years from now, though they expect a radically different story. Evans envisions mailing postcards to all households in 2010 , allowing residents to choose between requesting the traditional paper form to be mailed or logging onto the Internet to complete the census. Those who haven't already mailed in the form , they may still file electronically until April 15. Milly ^i^ Genealogists have no Census..... Milly: Maybe there hiding with my invisible Murrays...<G> Mary
Mildred, While you are looking for your Wards, look for mine too. My gg-grandfather's (James Liles) daughter, Elizabeth Liles married David N. Ward on December 28, 1858 in Blount County, TN. I found Elizabeth on the 1860 Blount County Census living beside her sister Rebecca Liles who was married to Ralph Perkeypyle. David was not listed with Elizabeth, only her two children, David W. A. age 1 and Sarah A. E. age 2 months and and Elizabeth Lyle age 75 who I think is her grandmother. I don't know if David died, if her was living somewhere else, or what. Some of Elizabeth family had left for Missouri and maybe Arkansas about this time. The only time I found Elizabeth and her children was in 1860. In 1870 Elizabeth Lyles is in an 'old folks home' in Blount County. Sandy
