A dead man fathering a child after death? This day and time with modern scientific technology maybe yes. In the era of 1850 there were a lot practical jokester among the census taker. Bill..

I don't know if the family just took in some relatives' children, or if some of those old maid sisters had children or what. Sue

From Roane County many went to the Jackson & Montgomery Co areas of AL via the river. Maybe he was making regular trips up and down the river and had a family on both ends! Jeri _______ Jeri J. Sue, do you have any information on this Brannon? I have some Brannons in my Roane County files. Richard
There are all kinds of strange stories that we can find in this imperfect study of our ancestors. I have a child who appears on the 1830 Roane Co census in the right age group and correctly as the only son at that time, but not on subsequent ones. There is a TVA record of a grave with the name of this child having been moved at one time. Yet, despite not being listed on this family census records or any other Roane Co records, he appears as if by miracle as an adult, naming the right person as his father, fathering children of his own and then dying (again??) at a ripe old age. And no...his name was not Lazarus <g> Audrae Mathis
If we can find evidence of a man giving birth to children, whether dead or alive, it will indeed, be news. :-) However, one case in which a married couple separated after they apparently had 3 children is that of Isaac Roberts and Elizabeth Liles. We have reason to believe Isaac left Roane County and moved to AL, where he married and had a second litter by 1850. Elizabeth Liles Roberts remained in Roane County, and although I cannot prove it is the same woman, I believe she is the estranged wife of Isaac, and she has some additional children in 1850 census--surname Roberts, which is what her name was. But I don't think they were fathered by Isaac Roberts. It may not be what we would prefer to find, but the best explanation for children born after a death (or divorce) of father is that mom had other gentlemen visitors. Times were hard--especially for women and children. I can't imagine how they got along as well as they did. We could exchange info if you like. [email protected] Would also like to know the identity of the man who had children after his death :-)) Norma

Milly: You just wrote down what a lot of us have THOUGHT but couldn't express. I loved it! You also need to add that they changed their ages with every new census and I have encountered a few sex changes during my research, too, not to mention they spelled their names (first and last) different every decade or so. Thanks for a good laugh with a lot of truth mixed in with the humor. Carolyn Lane Danville, AL
It's worth the flack! Thanks! Mary -----
I will probably get some flack for this , but it's worth it...I thought maybe we can use it when we get stuck or run into a brick wall...looking for our ancestors. LETTER TO MY ANCESTORS After spending a frustrating evening pouring over illegible handwriting in badly damaged and out of focus parish registers - and still NOT finding my relatives, I thought it was time to send an open email (at www.ofcoursethereisaHeaven.com) to all my "Upstairs" relatives who have gone to Heaven (99% of them) or the Other Place (1%). The text follows. (Feel free to insert your own relative's names where appropriate.) "Dear __________________: I am your _____________ and living in the early 21st century here in___________, ______. I am sitting in front of a microfilm projector (I'll explain what that is in a later email) in a special library run by the LDS (nice people, but later on them, too) trying to decipher the small and shaky handwriting of your parish's minister/vicar/curate (choose one).He must have been either vertically challenged or had palsy - because it's unreadable! At least I think it's your parish! I'm not even sure of the decade. Thanks for leaving such a good paper trail! (Sarcasm intended.)According to family legend, you and your wife ___________ had _____ children, some of whom lived beyond infancy. Yet not a single one was recorded in the parish records! I can't even find your marriage certificate. You two WERE married, right? Didn't you know that there would be legions of people like me fanatically spending their waking hours and small fortunes looking for any and all traces of your lives? Were you just stubborn, couldn't afford the fees, or not members of the Established (or any) Church? You're wondering, "What's all the fuss, we're dead as doornails?" We're not sure, but I think down here we're infected with the same disease:Rootsus obsessionus. Of course, WE are going to leave better records for our descendants! Anyway, I'm glad I was able to vent my frustrations upward. If I couldn't do that, I'd have probably popped the obnoxious researcher next to me who is right now translating an old parish records in German - and out loud, for Pete's sake! I have an idea.... When I'm "dead-on" (pardon the expression) to finding the correct record, give me some sort of sign. Make the projector bulb flicker twice. Or, if it must be done in the privacy of my home, I have a Labrador Retriever. Talk through her. That will get my attention for sure. Thanks for listening. I'll be better in the morning..... I'll be back at the library tomorrow night for Round 14, so catch me there. Sincerely, Your ________________, Milly Piros Genealogy OWENS~WARD~WELCH~WORLEY~ROSENBAUM~BYRGE~ RANDOLPH~FLETCHER~DELK~PATTON~MILLER~CRABTREE~ VANHUSS~WATMOUGH~WILLS~~PIROS~MINTON~~~~CHANCE~CLARKSON~IVEY~
Dear Friends, We found late last night that I had a virus that recycled all the mail in my inbox and sent it out with an attachment "docs.exe". Unfortunately, this list is one that the attachment was sent to. If you received an e-mail message from me last night with an attachment, please delete it immediately without opening the attachment. I'm all clear again and again I apologize for this whole mess. You don't know how badly I feel for the mess it caused on everyone else's computers. The strange thing is that I never even opened an attachment . . . I believe it came through on some regular e-mail I received last night. It looked strange and I immediately deleted it, but I must have looked at it long enough to set things in motion, I really don't know. Norton AntiVirus initially didn't detect it, but with the help of some technical people, we've got it cleared out now. Again, I apologize for everything . . . someone's idea of a sick joke!
