Karla, the 1860 Roane book Index does not list any entries for this surname. :-( PatMc > Please, please, let us know. So many Thanks... Looking for all SHAHANS > in the 1860 > Census... > > Again, Thank you > Karla Shahan
Oddly enough, the home page is www.heritagequest.com It is not organized all that well, in my opinion. You can go directly to http://www.heritagequest.com/ProdFind2/census.htm#1860 Be advised, this is a copy of the original microfilm. No index is included. But CD has cleaned up the film as best they can, so it is easier to read. You can print out copies, of course, and zoom in for closer look. You may want to take a look at what Family Tree Maker has to offer too. I'm not up to date on their catalog. I would also make another comment about the book (and others done by RCGS, and Bailey Publishing). Local people worked on them, sometimes correcting known errors, and including introductions that might be helpful to you, and Index. Since I have a lot of ancestors of interest in Roane, I got both the book and CD. If a person only has one or two searches, the most economical thing is still the microfilm rental. The1860 Roane census does exist. You can order a book from the Roane Genealogical Society ($25) - see http://www.roanetn.com/rcgs.htm It is also available on CD from Heritage Quest. And, of course, it is on microfilm available at Family History Centers and some libraries. I am not aware of any posting to web. Pat McDonald > Dear All, > > Does the 1860 Census exist? I have death certificate for a John WESTMORELAND, age 21, who died in Clay Co. TN. 1910. Certificate says he was born in Rockwood, TN. I believe he is s/o Dave Westmoreland - a brick wall. Any information appreciated. I have Dave Westmoreland b. TN. on Clinton Co KY census in 1860 and 1870. Married Clinton Co. Ky. in 1872. Said to have died Celina Co. - date unknown. May have remarried in Roane, Jackson, Clay in mid-1880's. Any suggestions for search or any information appreciated. Linda
Whoops, Made a mistake when talking about Welcker's Cavalry Bn.. Apparently, it was in operation from abt. Aug. 1863 to Early 1864. I believe that is about the time the Capt? J.M. Kincaid and other men from the 5th TN Cav.(McKenzie's), Co. B went to that unit. Didn't mean to confuse anyone and hope this helps. Thanks again to the list. Chris
Hi Donna, Nice to hear from you. I have been searching for a roster of the 5th TN Cav(McKenzie's), Co. B for some time. All I've been able to put together has been from my family that was in this unit: Monroe(J.M.), Henry W., Abraham Looney CASH and Stephen FORD. My ancestor, Monroe CASH b. 1826 East TN joined the 5th TN Cav., Co. B in Jan. 1862...then goes to Welcker's abt. Aug. 64(Kincaid also went to Welcker's about this time...so alot of these guys were following him, probably).....Welcker's was disbanded in early 1864 and my Monroe went back to the 5th TN Cav., Co. B again. He was pardoned 1865 in Charlotte, NC giving his home of residence as Decatur, Meigs Co. TN. Check out this website: http://www.tennessee-scv.org/heroes/edgemond.htm This Pvt. Edgemond(I think he is from Roane Co.) is in the 5th TN Cav, Co. B and also serves in Welcker's Cavalry Batt'n. also: you can find info on Welcker's Cav. Bn and the 5th TN Cav(McKenzie's), Co. B at these sites(you'll have to fish for these units a bit...just go under Confederate Cavalry and you can find them on the list: http://www.tngennet.org/civilwar/tncwindex.html there is a copy of the rosters of Welcker's at(unless it isn't posted anymore): http://www.roanetnheritage.com/research/military/civil%20war/confederate/02.ht m I only see a Jesse Cooley on the rosters...probably a relation to your group? Hope this helps some. Again, nice to hear and take care, Chris.
Re McKenzie's 5th Cavalry in TN. I believe John Franklin Cooley was on the roster for this unit. Also could you check for Cooley's in the Welcker Unit. Thanks very much Donna Bray [email protected]
Hello to this list, I need help with a lookup for William and Benjamin CASH on the 1830 Roane Co. TN census. Could someone give me the age codes for these individuals? Sorry all that I have for the list is questions(and little to contribute). Hopefully someday I will. Thanks for any help. Sincerely, Christopher D. Cash PS... Also researching the 5th TN Cavalry(McKenzie's), Co. B and Welcker's TN Cav. Bn which were associated w/ Roane Co. TN during the Civil War. I have some small bits of info on these units/personel, but am hoping to come across more. Thanks again to the list for all of your help to me in the past.
You are invited to visit, or re-visit, Roots of Roane County TN, if you haven't been there in awhile. I have added a few things lately, including some family info generously shared by other researchers. I have a few more photos to add soon. I've caught a few typos, but there's probably more. Please double check anything you find on my site. I also have added some photos to my Oliver Springs Historical Society web site. It may be of passing interest to those of you who have never been to Roane County, and perhaps bring back some fond memories to those who have been to Oliver Springs. I was there recently, and pleased to learn that some of the old homes there are being restored, as well as many new items in the Depot Museum. What an active Historical Society for a small town! The same kind of thing is going in other Roane towns. Additionally, I have made a MyFamily site (private) for SILVEY researchers. If anyone is interested in seeing it, let me know and I'll add you to the list if you want. And, I have been contacted by a man in Australia who is doing a bio on JOHNNY DUNCAN for a soon to be released music CD. Seems Johnny was born in Windrock (Anderson County) ca 1932, son of Columbus Duncan. He joined the Army, and spent some time in Europe, then Australia where he now lives. He never really made it big in this country, but has become very well known (country music) in Europe and Australia. Small world, huh? Anyway, if anyone has a genealogical tie to this family, please contact me. Pat Roberts (her X mark) McDonald [email protected] http://www.roanetn.com http://www.roanetn.com/oshs/
Hello List, I am trying to locate my family. I found that Volti (Love) Lowery was married to Bertha Jenkins in Roane County August 21, 1887. That is the extent of the information I have. Love Lowery is my GG Uncle and I have been trying to follow the migration of his family. Father was David (R?) Lowery mother Rebecca C. POE. Would appreciate any assistance any might be able to give. Greg Lowery [email protected]
Digging up Roots was suppose to appear in "Blue" and you should have been able to go directly to that link by clicking on the blue. Here it is again. <A HREF="http://sandysq.gcinet.net/digging_up_roots/">DIGGIN G UP ROOTS GENEALOGY #2</A> If that doesn't work for you, then try this: http://sandysq.gcinet.net/digging_up_roots/ Sandy is pretty good at what she does and her site is reliable. I once had a great site stored in my "favorites" which had the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census by neighborhoods. Now, I can't find it. Would someone please send me that site address? I believe it was on someone's personal web page. I remember Sparks being in the same neighborhood with my Bracketts, but at the time I didn't know that Mary Sparks was my ggggrandmother -- would like to find out who her parents were. Thank you very much, Ann

I am looking for information on Sarah Jane SCARBROUGH who married Thomas HUCKABY in 1873 in Anderson County, Tennessee. I was told that a lot of SCARBROUGHs came from the Roane County area, so I'm trying to find Sarah Jane's parentage through this list. Thank you. Ima J. Stephens
While the group is thinking about Elizabeth Cofers, I need some help. My gggrandparents were Thomas Davis b. ca 1800 and Elizabeth Cofer b. ca 1802. Don't know where either were born or their parents, but they wandered around in Tn after they married (don't know that tidbit either). Am assuming they married ca 1825 because the first child we find is Robert b. 1826. Does anyone have any info on this Elizabeth? Could she have been married previously to a Cofer and thats not her surname (and the reason I can't find her belonging to any Cofer family)? Any help is appreciated.
