Hugh 22001-11001 1830: John Hughes 000110001-00000001 >From Rhea County, TN, Census, Marriages & Tax records 1850-1900 Marriages: William J. Hughes to Mary A Dodson, Dec 23, 1857 (DEC 24), NH Long JP 1-#625 (too early?) This William and Mary Hughes appear in the 1860 Census and are 24 & 21, that would make birth dates 1836 & 1839. No other William Hughes/Hughs appear in Rhea or Meigs County census for 1870, 1880, 1900. "James Smith acquired 50 acres in a deed of conveyance dated Sep 29, 1838, from Richard and Blackstone Waterhouse. Land in Pleasant Garden Valley described as aparcel in the County of Rhea, on line of Charles McClung's survey and comes to John Bolen's 41 acre tract, thence with line of said 5,000 acre tract North one hundred poles to a small hickory thence West eighty poles, thence South one hundred poles to corner of said Bolen's 41 acre tract with his line East eighty poles to the beginning... Signed by Richard Waterhouse and Blackstone Waterhouse by his attorney in fact, Richard Waterhouse, Executors of R. G. Waterhouse, and is witnessed by Darius Waterhouse and N. G. Frazier." "This property was the subject of a long legal controversy following James Smith's death in 1843. James's first wife, Jaly died in South Carolina about 1837. His sons William and John were in South Carolina; Charles had married and moved to Rhea County about 1824 or 1825." "John W. HUGHES got possession of the 50 acres of land after James's death. The daughter from the second marriage, Rebecca, and hnusband Andrew J. Covington, started an ejectment suit that stretched over several years with many depositions from kin, friends and neighbors." "William S. Smith, son of Charles who was a son of James, Deeded his interest in 50 acres to John W. Hughes in Nov 1855" Page 135, titles MORGANTOWN "Morgantown is usually considered a suburb of Dayton, but has a distinct history of its own... Over the years, the citizenship of Margantown has included such names as William L. Humphrey, John Pl. Walker, J. W. Hughes...." >From Rhea County, TN Land Entry Book 1824-1889 & 1902-1929: There is a half page description of 150 acres more or less surveyed on Nov 4, 1872 for John W. Hughes, on Waldens Ridge.
