Wanted to check with some "local" folks about directions from Caryville to Dayton, TN. From my road map, it looks like the most direct route would be I-75S to the Lake City exit, taking 25W to Route 61 to Oak Ridge. From there, it looks like Route 62 would go to Route 27 to Dayton. Is this the best route/roads? Sometimes it's hard to tell from atlases just how well traveled roads are. Do you locals agree this is the best route, rather than going from Knoxville on I-40? TIA, Donna (Brock) Strong P.S. Would the Dayton Courthouse hours be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, as is pretty typical? Do they have really old Rhea County records to where I might trace my grandfather and his family?

I have some new information to on the CRANFILLS such as some locations, and married names of some of the the children as well as the YEAR of my Grandparents marriage. Bessia Dellary Trew * My Grandmother*, born in 1889 was married * in 1906 to John Westly Cranfill * My Grandfather*, born in 1889. I am not sure of the location of their birth's or their death's, but I do know that they lived in Meigs County - Euchee, Tennessee. They had 10 children: I learned that some of the children lived in Louden and Lenior TN and it is very possible that Bessia Cranfill-Trew died in Louden TN I heard she may have been put in a Nursing home in Louden Tn Nancy Lee Cranfill - Scott *deceased* Born 1906 ~ Died ? I do not know the name of his wife, but I heard that there was a paper clipping about John Westly Cranfill divorcing Bessia Cranfill. I have no clue of the date...Does anyone know where I might find such an article?

Who is the list owner for TNRHEA?
W.C., I also was struck with awe and dismay over the Littleton, Colorado incident. I am a mother of two toddlers ~ ages 4 1/2 and 2 ~ and it is very frightening to know that we live in a society where something of this nature can occur (and occur more than once!). I think letting people know you're supporting them through the turning on of lights is WONDERFUL. Sometimes just knowing people/Americans are behind you can be very comforting. However, I'd like to make a request to those on this mailing list as well. I'd like to ask everyone to pray that we can return prayer to our schools. I strongly believe that one of our major reasons we're seeing this type of violence is because we have, as a nation, forgotten God in our daily lives. This country was founded on religious freedom. People braved the high seas of the ocean to cross into a land so that they could worship God as they chose. Anymore, it seems that separation of church and state indicates we should NOT worship or try to tell others about the good news of Christ and his love for them. Seems mighty strange to me that knowing of Christ's love for us would be detrimental, yet being able to see violence and access guns so readily is a "right." I'm not exactly sure where I stand on gun control, as I truly believe that if we as a nation had our hearts changed, the need for gun control wouldn't be such an issue. A court recently removed the Ten Commandments from a school because they were afraid the children there might be influenced by it. Well, let me tell you: I'd much rather by children be influenced by commandments to love God, love their brothers, not covet what others have, not take things that don't belong to us, etc. than by the violence we see in all types of media (including our local and national news programs). I think we've gotten the separation of church and state mixed up in its meaning. When our forefathers dictated separation of the church and government, it was so that we as individuals could chose HOW we wanted to worship and WHERE. They did not want a state-run church, as was the case in Mother England. Now, we've turned that "privilege" into something totally erroneous from its first meaning. In 1998, my family recorded a gospel music project where we placed a song that my sister had written entitled, "How Much More." During the recording, I felt God telling me during the second verse of the song, "Jonesboro, AR; Oklahoma City." I cried tremendously and we have the song currently released to gospel radio stations. Upon our return home from the studio, I told some friends that I really wanted to get the song out to secular radio stations; however, I had NO idea as to how to go about doing that. When I saw the message of turning on the lights, I decided to turn on my own light by sending the lyrics to this song to all of you on this mailing list. Folks, believe me, I don't think it will be long until God tells Jesus Christ to come back to claim the church; the church made up of all people who have asked Christ to be their Lord. It doesn't matter what denomination you may attend; but, you MUST have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to make it to Heaven. I don't want to "preach" on a mailing list meant for something other than that. However, family is very important to everyone on this list and each of us in the family of God is concerned about those who are not. If anyone wants to discuss more in this area, please feel free to write. I'd be more than happy to chat with you. Thanks for letting me express my concerns. Here are the lyrics: "HOW MUCH MORE" (written by: Brenda Messaros) I. Sin is worse now than ever, the world is more evil each day; They've taken prayer from our children, explained creation away Satan's attacking the family, violence has entered the home; They say if it feels good, just do it; no rules, anything goes. Cho.HOW MUCH MORE until you say enough is enough, How much longer can this world reject your love; When will your grace be over, when will your mercy end, How much longer 'til your Son comes again. II.It's legal to kill unborn babies, they call it a choice not a sin; Abuse and murder surround us, will this bloodshed ever end; We must take a stand for Jesus, show this world He's the only way; There's no time to waste, today is the day; for tomorrow may be too late. My wife's line is from Horace M. Smith, brother of Charles D. Charles parents were Charles and Nancy (Jacobs) Smith. In 1860 census Rhea County, Malissa A, 4 is in her father's household, in 1870 her grandma Nancy Smith lived with them. Also shows Minerva J, 9. The "J" must have been a misread: "The fourth child of Charles "Dunk" and hannah C. (Casey) Smith was Minerva Tennessee, known as "Tennie" and she was b. in Rhea Co, in Oct 1860. She apparently came to Missouri with her sister, Melissa, and uncle, Wm. Smith. The "Dunkham" usually spelled like that comes from James Smith 1772-1843 and Jaly Duncombe 1770-1837. Charles was called "Dunk". "He was born 4 Feb 1823, according to his pension papers, in Rhea Co, TN. However, in the 1850 census and 1870 census he shows his birth state as Alabama. Dunk Smith did not marry until he was almost 30 years old, on 2 Jan 1853 in Rhea County, to Hannah Caroline Casey b. 1829 in TN. She is believed to be a daughter of Randolph or Abner Casey, and her mother named Elizabeth, born NC, 1785" There is way to much info on your Smith's to type here. I will have to either make copies of pages, or find a way for you to get a copy of this book. (150 pages) Larry
Hello Rhea County Researchers, Just checking to see if there are any Smith researchers on this list who are researching the following family which I found on an 1870 4th Civil District, Rhea County census transcription on the Internet the other day. I believe Malisa is my great-great- grandmother who married James K. Carr in Stone County, Missouri, in 1876. Smith, Charles D 48 M W Farmer AL Hannah C 40 F W Keeping house TN Lewis E 16 M W Farm Laborer TN Malissa A 14 F W TN Nancy E 12 F W TN Minerva T 9 F W TN Charles N 8 M W TN Horace 3 M W TN Family history given to my mom by my grandmother's cousin says Malisa's father was Charles Dunkun Smith. Malisa's mother was Carolyn Casey, possibly the Hannah C is Hannah Carolyn. Malisa's brother's and sisters match up if Minerva T is her sister Tennesee who married a Bud Wooly. Malisa is the right age and her claim for a widow's pension indicates she was from Rhea County originally, where she had previously married a William E Rogers in 1872. Mr. Rogers apparently headed for the hills after a short marriage and she later heard he had been shot in 1873, one story says in Memphis, another says in Alabama. The story continues that Malisa went to Stone County to visit her sister Tennessee and met and married James K. Carr. I have information about the Carr family, but just a few names for my Smiths so I would be extremely happy if anyone knows for sure if this is the correct family. Thanks. I don't find Richard or these children in the 1920 Rhea Census, and I don't have a 1910 yet. Richard married his first wife in GA, and possibly Isabella also, she was born in IN. There is no record of their marriage in the info I have. Larry
