Thanks, Edna My Stover ancestor bought land from Moses Greer in Rhea Co. ca 1892. I'm trying to find if the Greer family came into TN from, possibly VA. I've been tracking families from the Shenandoah Valley, down into NC, then over into E. TN. A Moses Greer was in the same area of VA as my Stovers. I'm trying to determine if the Rhea Co. Moses is of the same family. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Moses Greer was here in 1900 as a hotel keeper. The census indicates he was born Sept 1829-VA/Va/Ireland-M 48 years. Wife's name appears to be Orpha 68 (May 1832-T/Va/T-M 48. Son named Wetherinton S 32 years old (Dec 1867-M 2), daughter-in-law named Jennie 34 born Aug 1865 (Oh/Oh/Oh-M 2-0). Others in household were boarders. Thanks Bettye Tinker I am primarily researching my LOCKE family tree, and the names FIKE and ROSE show up as marriages only.... no other info available from me. I am including the info regarding both names and the marriage into the LOCKE family in case *you* have any info that would help 'flesh out' the branches.... Hi, Donna! In regards to your recent query: ----- Original Message ----- From: Donna Sue Strong <dstrong@worldnet.att.net> To: <TNRHEA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 09, 1999 4:40 PM Subject: Re: Roll Call > Saw your "Wilson" surname on the roll call and wanted to see >if the name Jeremiah Wilson (sp: Elizabeth Ridenour) meant >anything to you... >... If any of these names sound familiar, we may possibly have >a connection. > > Good luck, > Donna (Brock) Strong Well, none of the names you mentioned meant anything to me, *but* that isn't saying much. I am PRIMARILY researching my LOCKE Family in Tennessee. WILSON is a marriage 'branch' that I am trying to track down. Here is *ALL* the info I have on the WILSON connection: "Benjamin Franklin LOCKE Jr. b. 28 MAY 1851, Decatur, Meigs County, TN, occupation Doctor, m. 1875, Hattie WILSON. Benjamin died 13 FEB 1900, Oklahoma." So, the *only* WILSON name I have to go on is "Hattie WILSON". I did not see a "Hattie" mentioned in your info, but she could have possibly related to your WILSON's somehow. PLEASE look and see if you have ANY info on a "Hattie WILSON" in your info anywhere. I do not know if Benjamin Franklin LOCKE Jr. married Hattie WILSON in TN, or OK. I do know that sometime after the Civil War, B. F. LOCKE Jr. and his two brothers - Victor M. LOCKE and Elisha Sharp LOCKE - all moved from TN to OK. How SOON after, I am not exactly sure, so the marriage date is of no help to me. Again, I am trying to 'flesh out' the WILSON branch from this marriage. Thanks for any help you can offer! Just a note to let everyone know that in the short period of time since I first mentioned marking some of these unmarked graves in Rhea County, already two people have documented unmarked graves and are taking steps to get the stones. This is a great beginning, how about some of the rest of you checking your files and see if you have someone here that needs a stone. There's literally thousands of unmarked graves here and each that gets identified is a step in the right direction. For clarification, let me add that we have not identified the actual grave, that would be impossible, but they have provided proof of where they were buried and presently do not have a marker. If you can provide the proof of burial (which cemetery) and get the marker, and if you can't or don't want to come to Rhea County to install it, let me know and I'll do what I can to take care of it for you. BUT, please, if you want me to help you, contact me before you order a stone so that I can contact the individual cemetery associations to make sure there will be no problems with putting one there. Sorry I am late have been out of town. My Sir Names in Rhea county: Burton, Rhea......
In response to several inquiries, let me just post to the list some suggestions for getting a marker for your ancestor's grave. First, they must have served in some military capacity. This is for any time frame. Second, you must be able to prove they did. You can prove it by several means, use your imagination. The easiest, of course, is if someone received a pension for that service. Another way is to get copies of payroll records. Third, the grave must be unmarked at this time or in bad shape and in need of replacement. One comment about #3 - I see them all the time on graves where the original isn't in bad shape, so you may have to take that one with a grain of salt. Take this information to your local Veterans Affairs office (most towns have them), look at their brochures that show the different styles available, fill out the paper work, then sit back and wait. It can take months but it will show up. It is your responsibility to get the stone mounted in the cemetery, they don't do that, but they will deliver it to your house or where ever you specify. Out of the blue, a semi showed up at my house one day, they don't tell you ahead of time when it's coming:):) The tall monument weighs over 200 pounds so be prepared with some help to handle it. If you do get stones for previously unmarked veterans graves in Rhea County, it would be nice to know about it so that our cemetery records can be kept up to date. Good luck in finding the proof, the rest is easy. Edna Clack
Hi Folks, I was just in Denver and visited one of my ancestors and found he had one of these nice new stones. There were about 20 more lined up along the building waiting to be set. The office was closed but needless to say I will be writing to see who ordered the stone...I must have at least one cousin out there. So if you order the stone, you may find cousins too. After talking about this with Judy Henry, I thought it might be a good time to remind people on this list with Rhea County ties that if you can show military service for any of your ancestors, and they don't have a stone or it is in bad shape, the government will provide one for free. If you can take the time to order the stone, it will not only account for one of your ancestors, it will also document one more fact in the history of Rhea County. Edna Clack
Judy, Could you please contact me? Lost your email address. Thanks to Judy for documenting another burial in the Clack Cemetery by using the National Archives for reference. Edna Clack
Kelley, Saw your surname of Henry and was wondering if you could tell me if you have a William Henry in your line who was married to a Caroline Brock (actually, she may have been Martha Caroline Brock). She would have been born in July 1889 and apparently died while in the outhouse. She was reportedly very young when she died and the family assumed it was a heart attack, although they never knew for sure. If you have any information on her and the marriage to William ("Wild Bill") Henry, please pass along ~ I'd certainly appreciate it because no one in the family still living actually remembers her; only the stories about her.
