    3. Fred, Isham Reece and Mahala Thompson are in my direct line. Isham and Mahala, along with Isham's father Jesse, Sr. took off for Johnson Co., MO and got there early Feb, 1836 (from a family bible). Isham was sheriff from 1840-43, and assessor from '43-46 for Johnson Co.. Jesse, Jr shows up in St. Clair Co, MO (next door to the south) about 1840-50, after a stint in AL. All three of Jesse, Jr's kids were born in TN, but only his son and he show up in St Clair Co, MO that I can tell. Isham and Mahala are buried here in Cass Co, MO, and most of their direct descendants are still around here along the MO/KS border. I have much more information about this family, both ascendants and descendants, if you are interested. 1. RE: Question for you Rhea County folks
    2. Fred Salter
    3. Tim, I've worked on the Reese Family a little bit. Is this your Joseph and Sally? This is a very complicated mess. I got a lot of it from Census material, marriage records, and Cemetery Records from Rhea County. There was a lot of multiple marriages and kids living with stepparents and such here. Let me know if you see anything that looks familiar. Were the three kids Eliza J. Reese 16, James 13, and Lucinda C. 3: living by themselves in the 1860 Census because papa died? In 1840 there is Joseph Reese and his wife and four girls. Must be the ones that show up in 1850. I didn't have them listed before I started working on this response. I see they are Nancy, Lyda, Polly and Rebecca. Isham wasn't born until 1841 so didn't show up yet. The Census would seem to give the age of Joseph as being between thirty and forty years old in 1840 so birthdate would be 1800 to 1810. His wife lists herself as being between the ages of twenty and thirty or 1810 to 1820. She does give her age as 42 in the 1850 census though so she probably was just guessing. I see in the marriage records that a fellow by the name of Isham Reese got a license to marry a gal by the name of Mahala Thompson, Dec. 15, 1830 and then on Dec 16 solomized the same, by the blessings of the Honorable James Swan, Justice of the Peach of Rhea County, Tennessee, with Bondsman Isaac H. Eddington providing the Security for the marriage. Now this is a curious thing. A Fellow by the name of Joseph married to a gal named Sally has their first boy in 1841 and name him Isham. They had their first child in the year 1834. Now I don't see any mention of an Isham in the 1840 census in Rhea County but I do see a Joseph. Makes you wonder a bit eh? Joseph Isham Reese and Mahala Sally Thompson???????? Also: Isham Reece was a bondsman for a fellar named William Thompson, when he marreid a gal named Cynthia Cooper on May 9, 1833. Probably related to old Mahala eh? Also Malinda H. Thompson married Isaac Eddington March 12, 1839, with Squire L. Thompson posting bond. William Thompson was also bondsman for Squire Thompson when he married Serena Davis on Dec 12, 1831. So it seems we have Reese, Eddington, and Thompson tied together here. I don't know how closely yet. Just looking a one book on the crew. I just looked up Mahalia in the Black Rhea Co. Book and it gives her parents as Moses F. and Mary Martin Thompson. she was teh first known child of that marriage. The person who wrote the article in the book also lost track of the family in the 1850 census. 1880 Census Reuben Lemons and Mary Jane Reese have a couple of Nephews living with them. I don't know if the James and Sophia Brock family hung around in Hamilton Co. or not but I might have info on it if I check around. Fred Mary, I have been trying to determine a marriage date for my g-grandparents (James Brock and Sarah Elizabeth Ivey). It appears that both were born in or around Bledsoe County, TN. They later were in Rhea and Campbell County, TN; however, no records of their marriage in either county. From the 1900 Campbell County census, I can ascertain that they were married in 1875/76. I hadn't thought about they're possibly going to the Chattanooga area for the ceremony, but maybe they might have. I would certainly appreciate your checking to see if they might appear in the document you have. Much thanks, Donna (Brock) Strong

    3. Hi I have gotten a copy of "Hamilton County Pioneers" (Wilson, 1998) on inter-library loan and have it for only this week. If you would like a lookup for someone in early Hamilton County (Chattanooga), I'll let you know if they are included and will try to send as much info as possible. The book is apparently a compilation of articles from the Chattanooga Free Press (not sure of publication dates). It is interesting reading but not sure how factual - however it may supply "clues" -- it has 1-3 page stories on the various families; each story contains many quotations but no references as to where the information or quotations came from originally. if you have someone you'd like me to check on for you, send me an email at mel1@cdc.gov

    3. Woodchippy, Don't know if this your James Preston or not. >From History of Rhea County, TN: page 125 --Chapter 21 --Towns and Communities ..."The first recorded postmaster in Rhea County was Daniel Rawlings, who served in the Town of Washington from 1811 through 1818. During this same period, post offices also were in operation at Whites Creek and Prestonville. James Preston was postmaster at Whites Creek in 1814 (name changed to Valley Forge in 1823 and at Prestonville in 1816."... page 138 PRESTONVILLE (RODDY) "Prestonville, now known as Roddy, was one of the earliest group settlements in the upper end of Rhea County. It is only two or three miles from White's Creek, the county's northern boundary, and seems to have inherited the name of Senator George Preston, author of the county enabling act. A fine type of citizenship has lived in that community at every period of its century and a quarter of history, but, since no industry of consequence has ever been developed there, Roddy is still just a village. It is the site of a post office and a railroad station."(Campbell 1940:35 According to the list of post offices in Rhea County, Prestonville became Louella before being renamed Roddy in 1880. James Preston, the first Postmaster at Prestonville, had previously served as Postmaster at the Whites Creek office (1814-1816). It's exact location is unknown. James Preston was Postmaster from Apr 27, 1816 to May 27, 1823. page 148 -Tow String Valley "In the early 1800's, part of the valley was owned by Cumberland Rector. The northern part, near White's Creek, belonged to Colonel James Preston, who bought it from Richard Waterhouse for $300. Waterhouse had 250 acres here and later Col. Preston bought an additional 26 acres. This had earlier been owned by William York. Preston built a large two-story log house with a separate log kitchen. When Col. Preston died, his son inherited the land. page 251 ..."During the war of 1812 William Goad's sone, William Jr. and Edward, served from Rhea County in Captain James Preston's Company of East Tennessee Infantry." page 377 "William H. Stockton" ..."James T. Stockton (born in 1769) was an older brother of William Hayden Stockton. He also was included on the 1820 Rhea County Tax List, and evidently was living in the Hiwassee District, since he was listed as a School Commissioner in Meigs County in 1838. On Sep 5, 1833(Rhea County), James married Nancy Preston, daughter of James and Charlotte Preston. Nancy was deceased by 1840 when her father died, but James and their four children (William, Manda, Preston, and Rector) were mentioned in the will. Prior to 1850, James moved to Missouri (probably with his step-father, James Wilson), where he re-married. The children by Nancy Preston most likely remained in Rhea County." Larry

I'm not a Preston descendant, just have a picture of the old house before it was torn down in 1841 to make way for Watts Bar Lake. My Clack ancestors bought the place from the Prestons and lived in it until TVA came along. Ironic as it may be, the water did not cover where the house was sitting but the house was gone anyway. In fact, there's other houses sitting on the exact same spot today. Edna Clack

Both these couples lived until their deaths in the area of Spring City (actually in the now flooded town of Rhea Springs) Both were children of Berry Abernathy and Almirah Cobb. John Clayton died in 1911, Martha in 1906. I would like to obtain photographs of these folks. I can trade photos of their parents, Berry and Mirah Abernathy. Regina Roper

    1. Preston descendants
    2. Are there any descendants of Col. Preston on this list? I think it was Col. James Preston, veteran of the Rev. War, had a son named Rector Preston. If so, just wanted to share a picture of the house he built in Rhea Co in 1817. Edna Clack

    3. Hi Anita, Moses Greer states on the 1900 census at age 70, that he was born in VA, his father also born in Va and his mother in Ireland. I am also sure that he is the same Moses Greer that is listed in Bledsoe County in 1880 at age 50. Do you need those?
