    2. My apologies to the list. I don't understand exactly, but I will quietly unsubscribe, really didn't mean to cause an uproar........not my thing :). Bye to all and thanks for having me. Teri in TN

    3. I guess I don't understand either. The introduction by our new member, in my humble opinion, was totally appropriate. This seems to be no different than any other request or roll call. Possibly, the member who is offended (or whatever), thought he had enrolled in the digest mode. I normally do on some lists, but there isn't enough traffic on this list for it to be overwhelming to me. Maybe the single inquiry was the problem. Just guessing, and hope it doesn't offend anyone. We are all here to help each other. Laura Lynn dixiegirl@mindspring.com

Does anyone have that and does anyone know which book would cover Grandview. I think the first record may only cover the northern three quarters of the county. I'm not sure where Grandview lies. Let me know and I can check the book again. >> Volume 1 covered the North end of the county. Grandview is in the North end of the county. 2. Hi Terri, I have the Rhea County cemetery record, volume I, and didn't see any of the names you were looking for. I think, but am not sure, that there is another volume to the cemetery record. Does anyone have that and does anyone know which book would cover Grandview. I think the first record may only cover the northern three quarters of the county. I'm not sure where Grandview lies. Let me know and I can check the book again. I'd like to say something about Mr. Lowry's emails. First, I thought that this kind of question is what this list is for. This is a voluntary list, you don't have to participate if you don't want to or if you don't like the way it works. In regard to Mr. Lowry's second email, this list doesn't go to the entire net, and it is a bulletin board so to speak. It is "scoped" only to those who are concerned and have subscribed to the list. Obviously he isn't concerned. My question I guess is, why is he subscribed to the list? I think he has completely misunderstood the point. Gina Guinn

    3. Hey, I think the lady has a very legitimate question. There just might be a chance someone could be related to her line of people. That is what this web is all about. Finding information from other people and helping people in return. Finding out what she wants to know only educates us, and helps us and othere in their research. I appreciated the question and will help if I can. Your friends in genealogy, Larry and Sue Reeves lands@apex.net

    3. I think it's nice to have the ability to search for information on the net, but does it have to go to EVERYONE EVERYWHERE AND BECOME A PIECE OF .... WHATEVER? And this is NOT aimed at the lady that wrote this, but at TNRHEA for allowing it to happen. -----Original Message----- From: TERINITA@aol.com <TERINITA@aol.com> To: TNRHEA-L@rootsweb.com <TNRHEA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, January 15, 2000 10:45 AM Subject: Grandview, TN >My name is Terri and I'm new to the list. 2. I never thought I would see this on the Rhea list, but the man objecting to Teri's request reminds me of some of the people on a list I resigned from because it became like a playground of squabbling children. Teri's request is perfectly valid and I hope she finds some answers through it. Nancy

    3. Am I missing something here? The information below seems pretty typical of the type of information you find everyday in a multitude of genealogical sites. What, specifically, is the problem with the information below being put on the internet? If my ignorance is not allowing me to grasp the problem, please educate me so I don't make the same type of mistake.--Ken Parks Chuck Lowry wrote: > I think it's nice to have the ability to search for information on the > net, but does it have to go to EVERYONE EVERYWHERE AND BECOME A PIECE OF > .... 3. Donna, Also in the Churches and Schools of Rhea Co. (another big black book) on page 87-89 it mentions from the minutes of the Session of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Dayton, Tennessee: 4 September 1892--J.R. Cunningham of Chattanooga Congregation received by letter. Mrs. H.G. King of Tunnell Hill Congregation and E.A. Ashburn of Whitwell Congregation received by transfer. Mrs. M.F. Brock granted a letter of dismission. 6 April 1902--"On motion opportunity was extended for church membership when Mrs. Sarah Applewhite, Miss Anna Shalliday, Miss Agnes Shalliday, Miss Clark E. Haggard, Miss Elfie Bell Haggard, Miss Addie Brock, and Mrs. Nannie Kelvie McDonald presented themselves, the latter one by letter from Whitwell Congregation and the former ones on faith and experience." The former also were baptized. Miss Addie Brock was listed as being baptized on April 6 1902 by the Reverend J. Waller Haggard. Fred and Mary Salter Eagle River, Alaska Does anyone happen to know of an 1890 Rhea County, TN telephone directory that is available for lookups? Many in my BROCK line were born in the 1880s and without the 1890 TN censuses I am having a difficult time finding where some of them were in that 20-year gap. One relative married in Rhea County in 1885 and might possibly have been living there because the family doesn't show again until the early 1900s in Campbell Co., TN. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated, Donna (Brock) Strong

    3. Donna, According to the Big Black Book of Rhea Co. on page 147, Telephone Service was established during the early 1900's by the Rhea Springs Telephone Service. A line ran from Spring City through Rhea Springs and to the Iron Hill area. It featured the old hand-cranked party-line telephones. Good try though. Keep your thinking cap on. There are lots of list available, like the oldest known list of jurors summoned for the Circuit Court was found in the minutes of the County Court for 24 April 1810, and included a fellow named Pierson Brock. Related???? Keep searching.... Fred and Mary Salter Eagle River, Alaska Does anyone happen to know of an 1890 Rhea County, TN telephone directory that is available for lookups? 1. Early Telephones
    2. Finally found the letter written by my grandfather, Raleigh Micajah Clack, while he was attending school in Evensville (between Dayton and Spring City). March 26, 1898, he wrote to his sister, Bettie: ".......Well this is a time for everything to be done in a hurry and anything that can't keep up with electricity "isn't in it". A person can go to Dayton now and talk with people in almost any of the neighbouring towns such as; Chattanooga, Athens, Decatur, Charleston and many other places on the long range "phone". They intend to extend it to Kingston. They have commenced to dig the holes between here and Dayton. I guess they will have an office here before school is out........." Edna Clack

    2. Just ran across this tidbit and thought I'd pass it on to anyone interested. In 1820, James and Mary NAIL changed their surname to SWANSON. This was found in the TN Legislative Acts, Edna Clack

    2. Donna, Somehow I doubt a phone book for Rhea County exists for 1890. If there is one, I'd also sure like to see it. My grandfather wrote a letter talking about them stringing the wires through Rhea County and best I remember, that was 1899-1901 era. Edna

    3. I have just started researching my ancestor: Margaret Roddy b. 28 Sep 1785 in NC, married David Haston on 5 May 1800 in Knox Co. TN. I have been in contact with several Roddy descendants and one of them told me that some people on this list may have info on Col. James Roddy and his brother Col. William Marion Roddy of the Rev War. If anyone can give me any info on the children of these two Roddy brothers, I would appreciate it.
