Hey folks! I am a librarian working in the field since 1976. Interlibrary loan (ILL for short) is a great tool for obtaining information. Most libraries will do an ILL transaction for you. Some will charge a small amount (often for postage). The rub is that it can take many weeks or sometimes months to get a book. The lending library sets the policies for the loan of materials and how long they can be kept. they also charge sometimes. The final drawback to ILL is that many libraries will not loan genealogy or local history materials. the reason is that genealogy and local history materials are often not replaceable. I sue ILl a great deal for my research and help people at the library where I work nearly every day get books on ILL.
