I'm desperately looking for connections to my Brassell Ancestors. My gggrandfather was Egbert H. Brassell and the Dixon Springs, Smith County, TN enumeration on 1st Day of June 1860 shows: Egbert Brassell 44 M W Carpenter No. Carolina Mary P. Brassell 31 F W Housewife Tennessee Tennessee Brassell 12 F W Tennessee William Brassell 16 M W Farmer Tennessee Reuben J. Brassell 15 M W Tennessee Zachariah T. Brassell 9 M W Kentucky Luiza Brassell 7 F W Kentucky Joseph Brassell 7 M W Kentucky George A. Brassell 5 M W Kentucky Amanda Brassell 3 F W Tennessee The family later moved to Putnam County and the last son, Samuel Brassell, was obviously born there. The above listed Reuben J. Brassell (s/b James Reuben Brassell) was my great grandfather and he married Harriette Zeniera Dowell (father Reuben Hickman Dowell/mother Attaline Cooke, daughter of Richard Fielding Cooke) of Jackson/White County. I have much info on the Cooke line but am just beginning to dig up Dowell info and haven't been able to connect Egbert H. Brassell beyond the Smith County census. The family has a really sad history which I know many folks in that area are aware of and perhaps someone can help me track down records. Thanks so much for any and all info you might have. 1. [TNPUTNAM-L] Rootsweb Information
2. Putnam County List Subscribers - In response to my post a few days ago about Rootsweb's financial "crisis" and Rootsweb's value to us there have been many inquiries about how to "connect" with Rootsweb. Rather than trying to continue to reply personally and individually to these inquiries here's the site to obtain this Rootsweb "subscription/contribution" information: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html For AOL subscribers here's a clickable direct link: Rootsweb Subscription For us "into genealogy" the ancestor who, what, when and where is the core and bottom line of our task. Judging from the tone of responses to my post it appears many Rootsweb list subscribers have no idea of the Rootsweb who, what, when and where. It might be helpful and appropriate if our list owner/ moderat/facilitator could provide us a Rootsweb "resume/vita" (supplied by Rootsweb) with this information. Only with this information can we fully appreciate Rootsweb's immeasurable value to us "list subscribers." Thanks for your time and my best to all. John Tallman Lookout Mountain, TN Rootsweb Donor

1. [TNPUTNAM-L] Rootsweb Support
2. Hi Folks - I subscribe to about twenty other Rootsweb genealogical discussion lists and have at times subscribed to as many as thirty. The services provided by Rootsweb at no cost to its subscribers invaluable. If something happened to Rootsweb what would happen to us? Where would we be? What would we do? I was there with Maiser at Indiana University when the lists were killed and was there when Rootsweb saved the lists with resurrection. I've learned through a couple of other lists to which I subscribe that the financial situation with Rootsweb is precarious. Rootsweb is not a "corporate America" operation but a real "mom and pop living above the store" outfit. Mom and Pop support us in our genealogical search, research and networking. Isn't it time we supported Mom and Pop! I wonder how many users of Rootsweb services really understand and fully appreciate what's being done for us at no charge. Although there's no charge that certainly doesn't mean there's no cost. Who pays this cost? It seems no more than 2-4% of the users of Rootsweb services contribute to its operation. I don't see how Karen (Mom) and Brian (Pop) are able to do it. I understand they have just personally borrowed some $25,000.00 to keep Rootsweb operation going for us. It seems we have thousands and thousands dancing but few paying the fiddler. Folks, that's just not right! I have no connection with Rootsweb other than that of a very grateful user of its services who strongly and sincerely believes "if I want to dance you should pay the fiddler." I'd certainly appreciate an update from our listowner as to the situation at Rootsweb. John Tallman Lookout Mountain, Tennessee Rootsweb Donor

3. I must be working too hard, and/or getting too anxious for useful information. It is not a muster roll for Co. 3. At one time, many years ago, a man named A. W. Fox in Gainesboro, TN (RFD #3), owned some Civil War letters written to/from Capt. John A. Matheny, Andrew J. Lacy, and Jacob E. Matheny. I have a transcription of one of those letters, and do not know how it came to be in my possession. I would very much like to see the other letters, or transcriptions of them. Does anyone know who might have these letters? The Tennessee State Library & Archives does not have them in their collection. Mark E. Lacy [email protected]

1. [TNPUTNAM-L] 8th Tennessee Cavalry
2. Mark E. Lacy
3. The latest issue of the UCGA's "Upper Cumberland Researcher" includes a transcription of Capt. John S. Quarles' Muster Roll for Company "K" (afterwards Company "G") of the 8th Tennessee Cavalry during the Civil War. I have been trying to locate the notes/diary/journal of Col. George G. Dibrell, who commanded this regiment. (I'm guessing Dibrell referred to his notes when he wrote the entry for the 8th Cavalry for Lindsley's "Military Annals of Tennessee".) If anyone has any leads on where this information might be, I'd be very grateful. I have checked with the Tennessee State Library and found nothing. Even more importantly, I would like to find a muster roll, like the one printed in the UCGA issue, that covers Company C. Any leads for me, anybody? Mark Lacy [email protected] gggrandson of 2nd Lt. 3. Hi there! I am new to the mailing list and thought I would share my information... My gggrandfather is GEORGE WASHINGTON ALBERTSON born October 1839 in Tennessee. He married EMILY JANE MARSH (full blood Cherokee) in Smith County, Tennessee 21 June 1866. From the book that lists the people from Tennessee who fought in the Civil War, I have information on a G. W. Albertson who served in the 8th (Smith's) Cav. Co. I and there is also information on a George W. Albertson who fought in the 4th (Murray's) Cav. Co. F. From what I gathered - both of these regiments are men from Fentress County.. I was able to locate them on the 1870 Census living in Putnam County, TN.. Any information provided would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you, Angela Miller
