The announcement came during a teleconference this morning from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to the National Press Club and to other news organizations across the country. These records will be helpful for African Americans trying to trace their ancestry because the records often contain extensive information about the account-holder's family, military record, employer, and the names of their former slave owners. The Freedman's Bank was established by Congress in 1865 as a place for black Civil War soldiers and freed slaves to keep money. Judy **** TN-All mailing list, discussion list of TNGenWeb/TNGenNet.
