    3. Karen, I have information for your Brackett line. Missouri (Zudie) Brackett's father was James K. Polk Brackett (1848-1884) He married Melissa Peierce(no further info). James K. Polk's parents were Mige Brackett(1812-1884c) and Cynthia Hubbard(1812-1848); his Grandparents were Thomas Brackett, b c1775(lived in Rutherford Co, NC) and Elizabeth "Betsey"(whose surname has not been determined); Cynthia Hubbard parents' were Riley and Nellie Wilkerson Hubbard; and was part Cherokee. Mige and family were enrolled in the Siler Roll of 1852. Two of Mige's brothers, Benjamin and Lewis, also married Hubbards. Cynthia Hubbard Brackett died in Gilmer Co, GA in 1848 and is buried at Ballcreek Cem., Elijay, GA. The above information was taken from a book, entitled, "Benjamin Brackett of the Carolinas" written by Shirley Adair, who lives in Texas. I am sending a copy of this message to her, as I know she would like to correspond with you and include your "Missouri" family. My GGGrandfather was Morgan and Mary Amanda Walker Brackett who moved from Rutherford Co, NC, to Union Co, GA, in 1840's. Morgan's father is also believed to be Thomas Brackett, but have not determined the relationship with the above family, although, I am certain there is one (possibly brothers or half/brothers. I would like to find the connection. I have always happy to meet another Brackett researcher. 3. Sonya, I'll look for you, but I'm working long hours today and tomorrow, so it'll be later this week before I can. BTW, if you or anyone is wanting to purchase the 1900 Polk County Census, send a check for $27.00 to PCHGS / POB. 636 / Benton, TN 37307 with a note asking for that particular Census to be mailed to you. If you're going there in person, you can pick it up a bit cheaper (since they wouldn't have to mail it to you). To find where the PCHGS is located to visit in person, write to Marian Presswood: <presswood@wingnet.net> and she'll be happy to let you know the location and hours. 1. [TNPOLK] Granny (Nicholson, Smith, Lee)
    2. While the discussion is on the Smith's of Polk County Granny had 15 children from notes of Willard Graham who lived at Hanging dog Nc. Granny Link as she was known lived to be 120 years old. The Knoxville newspaper did a write up on her and said that these facts were well documented in about 1920 or 1921. Family stories say that she lived close to Prospect church in the Hanging Dog Community and was buried at Pine Dexter Cemetary in NC. Some said she was affiliated with Coker Creek Baptist church. Someone else said they thought she was buried in Polk co NC. Some said she lived so long that she recieved her 2nd eyesight. She lived some of her latter years with her grandson Frank in Polk Co TN. She spoke "Dutch" German? and wore a little hat and cape. She lived in Cherokee Co, Violet, Hanging Dog Community NC before she went to live with her kids. Some of her children's or grandchildren's names were: Margaret-who lived to be 107. She was a certified midwife and went as far as Dayton Ohio to deliver babies. She is proably the oldest person living in the United States and the family records preserved for more than a century thoroughly authenticate the date of her birth. She was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina, December 16, 1802. In the early years of her life she married a man named Smith and after his death she was married to Link. All other members of the family are dedceased except one daughter, who is an octogenarian, according to Z. Y. Long, a traveling man of Heiskell, Tennl, who recently saw Mrs. Link. Mr. Long said the venerable woman enjoys the distinction of having never taken a dose of medicine in her life. About nine years ago her eyes failed, and she is now unable to see. Her hearing also became affected, and she is almost deaf. Otherwise she is said to be in good physical condition considering her age. She eats three meals every day and can walk with ease, but most of the time she needs assistance in walking any distance. While traveling in Monroe county, Mr. Long heard of Mrs. Link and traveled several miles out of his course to meet her. Mrs. Link is known to most people in the community where she lives as "Aunt Sallie Smith." She was the mother of seven children, but all of them have passed away except the daughter who is now nearly 90 years of age. Owing to defective hearing, Mr. Long said he could not ask the aged woman concerning the early events of her remarkable life.

    3. Thanks Clay.....the last ROBERTS you listed in Dist 8 [Ducktown, Isabella area] are mine.... This Leathy ROBERTS was...Alethia Cline STANDRIDGE b. 1824 Macon Co., NC, dtr/o John Bailus STANDRIDGE, Sr. of Cherokee Co., NC. I have the Standridges going way back...including Old Pendleton Dist., SC. Alethia "Leathy" married abt 1840, probably right after the 1840 census, to Elisha/Elijah/Eli/Elias ROBERTS b. 1810 SC. He fits in as a son of William ROBERTS & Ellender 'Nellie' MURRAY-ROBERTS who were in Union Co., GA by 1834 census. It appears that Wm. & Nellie were in SC until abt 1812 and then headed to TN in area now known as Sevier Co., TN before winding up in Union Co. GA. So far, no one is including my Elisha as a son of William & Nellie's because I believe he is hiding in the Richard ROBERTS household in 1840 Union Co., GA. Richard didn't come with his father William to Union Co. by 1834. He, nor did any of his older children....they didn't arrive in Union Co. until 1835-1840. I understand that Richard ROBERTS was in Carroll Co., TN by 1850. Richard's wife was Rachel HAYES/HAYNES...& they married abt 1825 in TN. 1. [TNPOLK] Burns Information
    2. Can anyone help me? I am lost, trying to find some information about my grandfather. I have the marriage papers where he married my grandmother in Polk County in August 1923. And I know he lived in Polk County, in the Ducktown (Buzzard's Roost) area. HIS grandparents on his father side was on the Trail of Tears and received a check from the government. His name was William McKinley Burns and he married Alwayne Brookshire, as I said. He worked for "the Copper Company", and came from Kentucky. He died in Kentucky in either 1931 or 1932 of TB. I don't know if it is because he was Cherokee or part Cherokee I can't find nothing. His mother was a Smith from Ducktown. I want to buy the 1900 census but I don't have the address to send my check, OR I will be in Polk county next week. Is there a place I can pick it up. Thank you for any help you might give me. Sincerly, Sonya Weaver Daniel

    3. Twanda, You may need to search some other Counties for your David and Sarah Smith, they are not found in the Polk County Census records for the years, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1900. The David Smiths that cycles through those Census years are married to: Rebecca and another to: Eliza J. There are, however, 2 David Smiths listed in the 1840 Polk County Census: David Smith 10001 / 20001 David Smith 10000001 / 00201 They are most likely the two David Smiths that appear in the 1850 Census married to the two women listed above. Your Joseph Christian marriage time frame may be off. The first (and only) mention of any Joseph Christian is in the 1870 Polk Census where he is a 13 year old Farm Hand living in the household of Erby Boyd and family. He is not listed in the 1900 Census. I could not find a Virgil Garrett in any of those Census records either. Again, you probably ought to check other counties. If your family oral tradition says they came from Polk County, but you have no records supporting that, those oral traditions could be off a little and maybe those folks came from an adjoining county. Or maybe they just hid out whenever the Census Taker would come by....afeared of the government man. Who knows? Good Luck! 2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Dino hunting is Hunting for Dinosaur bones. Joyce and I went to the field for a week with the Denver Museum of Natural History looking for dinosaurs. We were in Wyoming on a 113,000 acre private ranch. We found lots of neat stuff. Felt like a little kids that owned their own candy store. Guess this is the little kid in all of us that never has grown up. Don't expect to, it's too much fun. Except for the wind and heat, it was ok. Still prefer the Holiday Inn to a tent. I have posted a web page about what we found and you can view it here: http://www.noelm.com/dinodig/ The web site has lots of photos and takes several minutes to load so be patient. It is well worth it, at least we think so. Hope you enjoy it. Noel and Joyce

    3. Divorce is such an ugly word back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Perhaps the Ann that is living with son Jessey is Jesse C's first wife as you suppose and didn't want the social bother of claiming Divorced, so chose Widowed instead. That would make sense. Anyway, below is the information you requested. These are ALL the Allens I can find in this Census. Also, for those that don't know, you can now order a copy of the 1900 Polk County TN Census from the Polk County Genealogical and Historical Society for the small fee of $27.00 mailed! Not much, considering the hours it takes to do all that work of transcription. THANKS PCGHS!! 3. Lee-Ellen, On another look at the 1900 Polk County Census.......you may have two ALLEN families mixed up?! I say that because I also found the following. See what you think. Clay ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tenth District ~ Enumerator: W.H. Vaughn 135 ALLEN, Jessey Head/W/M/Aug. 1870/29/M-3/TN/SC/NC Avaline Wife/W/F/Apl. 1882/18/M-3/1-1/GA/GA/GA Lola Dau/W/F/Feb. 1899/1/S/TN/TN/TN Ann Mother/W/F/Nov. 1831/68/WD/7-6/NC/GA/GA The thing to note here is the Mother (Ann) of this fellow is living with him and is listed as a Widow! She had 7 children and 6 are still alive in 1900. There are other Allens listed on this District that could fit being this Ann's children: Freemont & family, Fillemore & family, Perry & family all living close to each other. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Lee-Ellen Van Voorhis wrote: > Looking for information on an ALLEN family from Polk county. > > Jesse C Allen (1835-1912) married Annie Tanner in 1855 and Nancy Hedden in > 1876. > Perhaps he was also married to a Jane - or perhaps Annie or Nancy was called > Jane. > > Jesse and Annie's children include: > David P > William J > Millard Filmore > Margaret > John C > Jesse E > > Jesse's possible other children (perhaps Nancy was the mother): > Sousan > James C > Phebe > Louisa > Fremont > Perry > Caroline > Laurie > Taylor > Clay > > Jesse and "Jane A." appear on 1860 Fannin County census > Jesse and Anna appear on 1870 Polk County census > Jesse and Nancy appear on 1880 Polk County census > > Jesse is buried at Wiregrass cemetary in Polk County. > Nancy is buried at Bear Paw Cemetary in Cherokee County, NC. > Nancy's parents were John Hedden and Sallie Brown. > > I don't know where Annie is buried or who her parents are - not sure about > Jesse's parents (perhaps his dad is William Jefferson Allen). > > Does anyone have any information on Jesse, Annie or Nancy or the children? > Can anyone explain Jane? > > Thanks, > Lee-Ellen
