1. URGENT: Fannin Co. Library may disappear for 2+ years!!!!!
    2. Carol Ann Tindell
    3. Everyone, take note.... If you live in the Blue Ridge, GA area and can attend the March 7 -- 1p.m. meeting at the Library, please do so. Our Fannin Co. library, which holds a lot of useful resources for us genealogy researchers, is in trouble. The following message was sent to me from Cece, one of our Fannin Co. Genealogy Society members. Unless a solution is found, we may not have our Fannin library for next 2 years.. or longer....!!!!!!! I can tell you from my personal research experience, you'll not find many of our Fannin Co. books, vertical files, etc. in any of the other surrounding county libraries. This will greatly hamper our ability to perform Fannin Co., GA research. 3. Fyi...Cathy Hello all, Family History Centers have installed the Freedman's Records on their computers.... FREEDMAN'S RECORDS RELEASED See http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/02/24 /MNE137934.DTL Link See http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/morm19.html Link The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a CD-ROM today that contains thousands of records from the Freedman's Bank, a national post-Civil-War-era bank for freed slaves. The announcement came during a teleconference this morning from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to the National Press Club and to other news organizations across the country. These records will be helpful for African Americans trying to trace their ancestry because the records often contain extensive information about the account-holder's family, military record, employer, and the names of their former slave owners. The Freedman's Bank was established by Congress in 1865 as a place for black Civil War soldiers and freed slaves to keep money. Judy **** TN-All mailing list, discussion list of TNGenWeb/TNGenNet. 3. Barbara Fagen (CGRS) has retyped the following pamphlet on some Bradley County history and sent to us for inclusion on the Bradley TNGenWeb site. "A Brief Sketch of a Country Neighborhood in Bradley County, Eight Miles South of Cleveland, Tennessee Including the First Settlers and Present Citizens: Their Mode of Living in the Past and the Present", by T.E. Thatch (1894). I added an index. I will be sending the file in 3 parts: 1. Thatch intro 2. Brief Sketch... 3. Thatch index. She has also created a name index! According to the introduction by Mr. Thatch the first residents included citizens from Rhea and Monroe County. The pamphlet is not yet linked from the main page, but can be viewed at http://www.tngenweb.org/bradley/thatch Thanks, again, Barbara! 3. Directions to Springtown/Servilla: Go North on US 411 from Benton. Just before you cross the Hiwassie River, turn right (East) on TN 30 to Reliance. At Reliance, turn left (North) on TN 315. Springtown/Servilla is just before you cross the Monroe Co. line. Hope this helps. 3. David Hughes wrote: > Is there a Springtown Cem in Polk Co. and can someone tell me how to find it? > David Hughes David, Many of the Cemeteries of old in Polk County were either 1) associated with a particular church and therefore located in some close proximity to that church or 2) associated with some particular family or families and located somewhere on or near their homesteads. The exception to this would be some Cemeteries located in or near a larger townsite, but the vast number of smaller communities buried their dead as above. I do seem to have in the back of my mind some Cemetery in or around Springtown called the Springtown Cemetery, but can't think of it right now. It may be associated with a family or a church. The best person to ask would be Marian Presswood <presswood@wingnet.net>. In the Polk County Historical and Genealogical Society Quarterly ~ August 1998 there are 2 Cemeteries listed that are associated with Springtown (Servilla). These were written by the WPA in 1940, so the information is not current. But to quote from them: 1) MARY SMITH GRAVE Location: 2 miles west of Servilla. Servilla is 18 miles NE of Benton. (10 x 10 ft) Established: Approximately 1906 by John Smith and discontinued same date. One grave. Remarks: Mary Smith was born on Greasy Creek. She was the daughter of Martin Bates who came from NC. She married John Smith, a son of John and Panthenia Childress Smith. Farm where cemetery is located is owned by Archie B. Sewell. Not cared for. 2) SMITH COMMUNITY Location: 1/4 mile south of Servilla or Springtown. Servilla is 18 miles east of Benton. Established: About close of Civil War by the Isaac Smith family at his death. Remarks: Isaac Smith was from SC. He married Tempy Wright. Members of the Smith family and others are buried here by James Burchfield on account being close to his spring and the Burchfield cemetery was established on his farm when this one was stopped. In bad condition. Number of Graves: 50 or more. Acreage: 1/2 acre approx. [Some of the people buried there are:] Carden, Jasper F. - July 28, 1828 / February 16, 1903 Davis, M.E. - May 22, 1895 / December 8, 1899; d/o W.H. & L.C. Davis Harris, Irma M. - October 28, 1891 / January 24, 1899; d/o S.H. & F. Harris Harris, James A. - August 14, 1895 / April 14, 1899; s/o S.H. & F. Harris Hood, John W. - November 22, 1852 / October 10, 1905; Mason Kirkland, C.C. - August 31, 1819 / September 31, 1903 (believed to be Chris Kirkland.) Kirkland, Mary Jane - August 17, 1864 / December 6, 1945 Shaw, Francis L. - (ca. 1840 to 43 /Nov. 30. 1902) Co. F. 25 Iowa Inf. (Govt. stone; pension #374010 and 560683) Fate and Mary Jane were married December 20, 1869. Shaw, Mary J. Lee - born August 18, 1845 / (died January 5, 1920) Smith, H.R. - October 12, 1903 / March 9, 1905; s/o W.H. & Grace Smith Those two cemeteries were established by relatives of mine. I know there are other Cemeteries in the area, but this is the best I can do to help you at this time. If you know of someone in particular that you're looking for, that may be easier to look for than a particular Cemetery. Best Regards ~ Clay

The little information I have on them shows Mary as being born about 1765 in North Carolina and Isaac Russell as being born around 1755. I am not sure that these dates are correct, but I have found who I think are Isaac and Mary on the 1850 Polk County TN census listed as 95 and 85 years old, which would make these dates at least close. Some time after their marriage they left North Carolina and went to Tennessee where they spent the rest of their lives. If anyone has any information about this family or knows where I could find a record of their marriage I would be very grateful. Thanks for your time Jaime JLeeV196@aol.com
