    1. MOORE, William and family, 1900
    2. William Moore was born in Lebanon Co., PA ca 1830. He moved with his parents to Westmoreland Co., PA prior to 1838, then moved to IL pre Civil War. He married Charlotte Staples in Tazewell Co. IL, Feb. 1851. William was in the civil war from Decatur, Macon Co., IL. His name is on the monument there and I have some of his enlistment records...the POW records have not been purchased yet. He and Charlotte moved around quite a bit, from IL to WI, back to IL. He and Charlotte had marital problems and on the 1900 Macon Co., IL census, she stated she was a widow. I know from other sources, however, that he was alive and living in Benton, Polk Co., TN at the time. I found him on the 1900 census. His wife was Sarah, born in Oct. 1849 in TN. They had 3 children. Willie Moore, born March 1883 in TN. Benjamin Moore born March 1886 in TN. Scholott Moore born April 1888 in TN. I haven't found them since the 1900 census. Shirley Maynard

    1. Barker researchers
    2. I am seeking information about an early 1800's TN court case involving Barkers. Would love to see everything in the case file. An abstract of the case appeared in the Tennessee Gazette in 1804 with just enough information to be enticing. Would very much like to communicate with persons working on the Barker family in eastern TN, and especially regarding this court case. Mike Barker Richmond, VA mbarker7@aol.com

Some sank deep roots and others moved on, scattering our ancestors from coast to coast. Our purpose is to have fun, get acquainted, and swap genealogical information. The above is a list of the families which we know for sure had ties in early East Tennessee and the ones we have some information on. However, (Sorry all surnames are CLOSED Now) Contact Carl at <CousinsCom2@hotmail.com> or Terri at <CousinsCom1@hotmail.com>. All we ask is that you be willing to act as host or hostess/greeter for your surname and to share whatever info you have available. ALL surnames are welcome to attend whether your name is listed here or not! There will be a wealth of information to share. Plan on attending please! We Do Need A Head Count, To, NOT over book, However. (Numbers of persons coming) is needed. We would love to have volunteers for all the names on the list (except Brown and Coffman, which we have well-covered) to act as co-hosts/co-hostesses to greet and help people with their surname feel welcome and to help them meet researchers working on the same surname. To those of you with East TN roots who don't have much extended family and therefore don't have a reunion, this is your chance to bring your immediate family members and join ours. We want everyone to have fun, feel welcomed, and enjoy themselves. **That's What Tennessee Stands For: THE VOLUNTEER STATE ** "Where pride walks and the flag flies!"** We know that we have some college instructors attending who perhaps can be persuaded to speak. We also have experts and accredited genealogist who have been researching for 30 plus years. They are ready to share their information with us. ---------------------- Attendance is FREE . . . but we will have a "donation" jar to offset the cost for using the campground, tableware, entertainment, and clean up. PLEASE PLAN ON ATTENDING AND BRING: 1. First and foremost yourselves... 2. ALL BOOKS, BIBLES, PICTURES, FAMILY SHEETS, AND INFORMATION YOU HAVE AVAILABLE... 3. A covered dish to share. Drinks, ice chest 5. A chair or blanket to sit on...If you are serving as a host or hostess, you will also need a small table (card table size or larger) to display your family information on. -------------------------- Last year was our first attempt to pull all these early settlers' descendants together. As far as we knew, it had never been attempted before. It was a resounding success for a first attempt, and it was agreed that it should become an annual event. This area is so very rich in history, both as an Indian frontier and as an isolated jewel of Union sympathy during the Civil War. It also served as a departure point for westward movement and new settlement. Our ancestors left us a rich heritage, which we are striving to preserve and pass on to our children and grandchildren. This rich tapestry of ideals and values is what made us a great nation and what made each of us what we are today. And it began with our earliest immigrant ancestors who came here to start a new life and a new country. COME and SHARE that heritage with us on July 13-14. We are looking forward to making many new friends!! Sincerely, Terri Brown Jurca: <CousinsCom1@hotmail.com>, 5509 Paula Rd., Knoxville, Tn 37912 Carl Coffman: <CousinsCom2@hotmail.com> 1448 S. 1. Gail Shukait ~ Springtown Cemetery
    2. Hooper, R. Clayton
    3. Does anyone have a current email address for Gail Shukait? I paid her in February 2000 for 2 copies of a transcription of the Springtown Cemetery that she said she had. Shortly after that she had a death in her family and was "behind" on getting it to me. I've written her several times since then and get no reply. Her last known email address was: gshukait@tir.com, but that one no longer works. If you can send me her current email address or forward this message to her I'd appreciate it. I'm only looking for the material I paid for, nothing more. Thanks ~ Clay

Married Mary Wallace and had 6 children: Birtha Belle (1884), George (1886), Luther (1893), Sallie Dora (1895-1988, my grandmother), Lake (1898), and Richard (1903). 1. 2002 is almost here and so is the 1930 census
    2. Hi Polk Folk, Hope you all had a Happy Holiday, and were able to spend it with your loved ones. That is what the Holidays are about, time to be with your family & friends. Once again, we are about to embark on a New Year. A lot more data is put online everyday, and if any of you have Polk connections you would like to share, please e-mail me (Littletn@aol.com), or post it to our list. Speaking of sharing, in April 2002, the National Archives and Records Administration will finally make available the 1930 census microfilm. I don't know about you guys, but I am definitely looking forward to the 1930 census. For me personally, it will (hopefully) answer some questions on a few relatives that I am unsure of how they are connected. I am hoping it may also answer a question on a couple of marriages, but we shall see. Wouldn't it be nice to see it published as a CD set the way the LDS published the 1880? Well, maybe someday!! Anyway, I wish you all the best, and hope you will find all those ancestors in 2002!! 1. Dicy A. Howell, Polk Co., TN
    2. Whatever happened to Dicy A. Howell, b. abt 1867 in Polk Co., TN to parents: Edwin Wallace Howell and Mary unknown Womack. Did she grow to adulthood and marry or did she die young? I cannot find any early death records to support that, nor can I find any marriage records to support that theory either. Dicy had two half-siblings: JOHN N. HOWELL, b. Abt 1857; d. 1921. MARGARET J. HOWELL, b. Abt 1864, Polk County, TN. We also have no clue what happened with these two children. John N. maybe went to TX. Margaret J. we have no idea. Any help will be appreciated. 1. Recipe for washing clothes
    2. I borrowed this recipe from a MyFamily.com website. The submitter was Angela Steffke but I thought it was cute! Makes us count our blessings. Print and put above your automatic washing machine as a reminder, Laundry day could be worse! Years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave a bride the following recipe for washing clothes 1. Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. 2. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. 3. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in bilin water. 4. Sort things, make 3 piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags. 5. To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water. 6. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and then bile. Rub colored, don't bile, just rinch and starch. 7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rinch, and starch. 8. Hang old rags on fence. 9. Spread tea towels on grass. 10. Pore rinch water in flower bed. 11. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. 12. Turn tubs upside down. 13. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

    1. Good research tip
    2. Invest the time to research academic libraries' special collections. Often they will have materials of historical or genealogical value that may prove helpful in your research. These might include microfilmed newspaper, funeral home ledgers, obituary files, private or corporate papers, letters and diaries, vital records no longer wanted by government officials, maps and atlases, gazetteers, government document collections, unusual microfilmed records, photographs, and a variety of other materials. Not all of these materials are always included in the library's catalog, so seek out the person responsible for administering the library's special collection and make a new friend. - George G. 3. I am seeking information on the DUFF families living in Polk County after 1839 to about 1870. One of my relatives was County Sheriff, John Calvin DUFF. His mother is believed to have died while he was serving as sheriff of Polk Co. during that time. I particularly want to find her death date and burial site: Sarah (Sallie) Haynes DUFF, b.VA 1785, died in mid to late 1860s. They were Presbyterian. Any information on any DUFF appreciated. 1. I am the list moderator/owner
    2. Hi Polk Folks, A few weeks back I sent an e-mail stating I needed to resign as administrator/moderator of this list due to my workload, etc. Well, today some administrative changes were made at my place of employment, reducing my work load somewhat. SO...I have decided to stay on as administrator of this list. I know we are not a very active list, but Polk County is where all my relatives began their life in TN, therefore it is a place very close to my heart..I hated to give up the list, and now it seems I won't have to. I want to thank Teresa and Joyce for their offers to take over this list. I really appreciate the fact that they were willing to step right in..They are both wonderful people, and they would both be wonderful list administrators. However, thankfully, due to changes from my employer, I will be able to continue as list administrator/moderator, and as Assistant County Coordinator of the Polk County, TN site. Connie Baumann
