    3. As the year, and this century draw to a close, we all should reflect on what has been and what will be. 3. Subject: Windows 95 & 98 Y2K Computer tip You may think your PC is "Y2K" compliant and some little tests may have actually affirmed that your hardware is compliant, but you'll be surprised that Windows may still crash unless you do the simple exercise below. Easy fix, but something Microsoft seems to have missed in certifying their software as Y2K compliant. This is simple to do, and VERY important. Click "START" Click on "SETTINGS" Double click on "CONTROL PANEL" Double click on "Regional settings icon (look for the little world globe) Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page (last tab on the top right) Where it says "Short Date Sample" look and see if it shows a two digit year format: "YY" Unless you have previously changed it will be set incorrectly with just 2 Y's. It NEEDS to be 4 Y's. That's because Microsoft made the 2 digits setting the Default setting for Windows 95 and Windows 98. This date format selected is the date that Windows feeds ALL application software and will not rollover into the year 2000. It will roll over into the year "00" Click on the little arrow button in the window across from "Short Date Style" and select the option that shows "mm/DD/yyyy" or "m/d/yyyy". Be sure your selection has four Y's and not just mm/DD/yy. Then click "Apply" Then click "OK" at the bottom. Pass this info on to your PC buddies. No matter how much of a computer guru they think they are this might be a welcome bit of information! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. [TNPOLK] Archived Messages on the List?
    2. To: Tim Stowell, Are the messages on the list archived and how can a user access them? Is there some kind of database that would list the surnames being searched of these older, previous messages? Saw your message about the alternate search engine for the Hamilton Co. Genweb site. Will try it out later today. Searching for parents of Joseph W. HANCOCK and his brothers: James C. HANCOCK, Clark HANCOCK, and Leroy HANCOCK who were in Hamilton Co. and Bradley Co. up until 1857 when they went to Southern IL. Joseph W. HANCOCK was born 27 Jan 1837 in the Chattanooga area, or so we believe. Where were the parents and earlier generations before they moved into East Tenn? How were these Hancocks related to those who were in Polk Co? Any and all help and tips welcomed, and very much appreciated! Darrell Hancock ddhanc1@aol.com _______________

    3. My ADAMS line has been at a standstill for yrs and I WANT to move it forward!! Following is what I have or believe is connected to my line. I truly will appreciate any input or assistance from those reading this. My line as known is: Calvin b 1828, Celia b 1830, Telitha b 1832 and Levi b 1833. 1838 Bradley CO TN (area that became Polk CO TN) - Record of school matters in the district, number of children. William Adams was listed with 2 children. I believe they were Calvin age 10 and Celia age 8. Most likely Telitha and Levi were not attending school due to their ages (6 and 5). 1840 Polk Co TN census William Adams household: 1 male age 70 - 80 (himself) 1 male age 10 - 15 (Calvin, age 12) 1 male age 5 - 10 (Levi, age 7) 1 female age 40 - 50 (possibly Sarah?) 1 female age 10 - 15 (Celia, age 10) 1 female age 5 - 10 (Telitha, age 8) 1841 - September William Adams died. Riley Horn and George Dalyrimple took his will to the courthouse ( it has been lost and no one knows the contents of the will). 1850 Polk CO TN census Sarah Samples household age 62 ( is it possible she was the woman on the 1840 census, remarried and widowed again?) Calvin Adams, age 22 Celia Adams, age 20 Telitha Adams, age 18 Levi Adams, age 17 no other residents in the household. 1851, Aug 15 Calvin Adams m. Sarah Jane Carver in Monroe Co TN. He served in the Civil War, came home, left to go after something (family lore) and was never heard from again. Sarah Jane lived out her life in Monroe CO TN. Their children were: Amanda m. Thomas R. Bledsoe, Sarah Anne m. Wm H H Branum/Brannon, Washington Levi m. Emma Powell, John Andrew m. Sarah Jane Roburn, Malinda, Mary E., and Nancy Jane. m. James B. 'Dick' Blanton. abt 1851 - Celia Adams m. David Cross. They lived in Polk Co TN then removed to Cherokee Co NC where they were listed in the Hot House twp on the 1870 census. Their known to me children were: Sarah, Nancy, William, Calvin, Levi, Daniel J., Millie, and Polly. abt 1859 - Telitha Adams m. Joshua Franklin Cole. They were on the 1860 & 1870 Polk Co Tn censuses but did not l find them on the1880 census. Their children were: Columbus, William, Eliza A. Missouria 1860 - Levi Adams was a hired hand of Ephriam Prince and living on his property. I next found him on the 1880 Polk CO Tn census in Ducktown with a wife, named Elizabeth age 37 and children: John, James, Sarah, Sarah, Mary E, and Cinthia. To my knowledge I have not found anyone else claiming 'Wm Adams d 1841 Polk CO TN" as their ancestor. I would really appreciate input and clues as to where to look next as I am at a standstill on this line. If there are other Polk CO TN school records from the 1840s then someone should be listed with at least Telitha and Levi as school age children. Bettye

    1. [TNPOLK] Genealogy-Sharing Information
    2. Hi Folks, In a recent issue of the Polk County quarterly, a very good question was ask.. Have you shared your info with the Polk County Historical & Genealogical Society, or any area Historical Society that your ancestors were from??? People are constantly walking in to these places, looking for info on their families. Imagine the thrill they would get if there was a family file already at the Genealogical/Historical Society, regardless how big, or small.. It would not only help these people, but could be a way for you to find new relatives. I personally have been contacted by several people regarding info I have sent to PCHGS. I try to always include my name, snail-mail address, and e-mail address on the sheets I send. That way, the person can reach me whether they are online or not. You do not have to be a member to provide your info, nor to research the files at a lot of the Genealogy/Historical Societies. Just a thought..:):):) Connie Baumann Asst. 3. I have a copy of wht was written of this school list It was taken from "Scraps and Things, and ___ of Local History By. J.D. Clemmer" It states "At the administrators sale of the houshold goods of Rev. W.C. Lee, at the brick house near the Benton Springs road about fifteen years ago an old record of school matters in this district before Polk County was discovered. On the first leaf is in large letters Record Book, the second leaf has State of Tennefsee, Bradley County December 16, 1838 and John Williams and below this name again and Absalom Selvidge and David Ragan on the third page the record begins: State of Tennefsee, Bradley County: December 16, 1838 Return of the children of the 5 district by the Commissioners is as fowlers to wit." In the district of A.R. Stephenson he has listed return 76 and has the following "Samuel Merit 1, Ephriam Prince 2, William Adams 2, Jacob Cross 3, Elizabeth C. Todd 1" and it continues with no other Adams listed in that district. The listing of three of these families; Ephriam Prince, William Adams & Jacob Cross in the same school district along with the info we have of Cecelia Adams who m. David Cross, son of Jacob Cross (listed above) and Levi Adams who was found living in 1860 with Ephriam Prince (above). The 1830 & 1840 census that match the ages of the children of Williams Adams would lead us to belive they were more than likely the children of this William Adams who d. in 1841 in Polk County, Tn. 3. Does anyone know if there are lists of students - even just the surnames - for the 18 40s in Polk CO TN? I am grasping at straws trying to find any link to my CALVIN Adams and his sisters, Celia & Telitha, and brother, Levi that were on the 1850 Polk Co TN census in the household of Sarah Samples. No other persons listed as living in that dwelling. Thanks, Bettye
