A new Veteran's book has just been released for Pickett County veterans. It is available from the Pickett County Library, 106 S. Main, Byrdstown, TN 38549. Phone is 931-864-6281. This book has been in the making for several years and was compiled and edited by John David Hassler (who unfortunately died before seeing the fruit of his labor), W. Howard Groce, and Ronald Gene Maiwald. This is a very well done book, and is well worth the $50, the proceeds of which will go toward library programs, especially in the new library. Veterans from the Revolutionary War to the 2001 and 2003 Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqui Freedom, are included, and also a long list of Cold War and other Peacetime Veterans. Geneologists will find this book a helpful and interesting resource. A three page list and description of medals and commendations awarded to servicemen during these periods is helpful. And a copy of the Constitution of the United States is printed in the back of the book along with all the various amendments to the Constitution and their dates of adoption. Finally, a listing of the sources used for the compilation of the various records is given. I recommend this book if you have veterans or family members of veterans who have lived in Pickett County. What's also great is that the book will be updated in case there are veterans who were missed in the first printing. Willie Beaty L-2
Willie, My husband's Revolutionary War ancestor, George SHELTON, lived in the part of Fentress County that became Pickett County. Is he in the book? And the other Fentress Co., TN soldiers who lived in the part that is now Pickett? Thanks! Anna Bertram abertram@heartofn.net
