There is a Martha E. Irwin (b. April 1868), which may well be the one and the same as the Mattie who was married to James T. Knight since the birth month and years are the same and Mattie is a nickname for Martha. This Martha Irwin's father, John H. Irwin (b. November 27, 1833, d. April 29, 1905) is buried at the Smyrna Cemetery in Pickett County, which is also the same cemetery that Mattie and James Tobias Knight are buried in. This is the info I have on the John H. Jo Thanks so much. All I have for a connection was the Pickett County History book that stated Mary Gunnells married JE Gilpatrick. They had 4 children one was my grandfather James William Gilpatrick. I found a notice in Livingston that JE had to apply for legal guardian for the children because there was $14.00 inhertiance from her. She died around 1900 the best I can come up with. Her father and mother were WILLIAM HENRY GUNNELLS married MELISSA OGLETREE his parents were JAMES GUNNELS married SAMATHA HILL his parents were WILLIAM POSEY wife not known his father was WILLIAM NATHAN wife unknow his father was NICHOLAS GUNNELLS married ROSHANNA from SOUTH CAROLINA. I would love to know more about her and the family. Any information would be appreciated. Not sure where he was born. Do know that he came to Overton Co. TN from NC sometime shortly after 1820. I have no knowledge of him being an indian. He married Mary Polly STORIE abt 1815/18 probably in NC. She was b. abt 1798 Wilkes Co.,NC. There is a question abt Mary Polly being a SHAVER or a STORIE. A John Angel of Sumner Co.TN md a Polly SHAVER in 1819. Squire Angel md Mary Polly STORIE, d/o Josha and catherine Lewis Storie of Wilkes Co.NC. Problem is that I cannot locate a marrage record for them. "Squire Angelea" was a witness in court in Overton Co Jan 21 1822. He was 22 yrs of age, thus b. abt 1899. He is in Fentress in 1830 as "Angel", 1840 as "Angla". His death is Oct 11, 1846. Children were: William, Louisa, Martha 1829, Polly 1836, Martin 1833, Alexander, Margaret 1839, Ambrose, Allen, Catherine 1820, Alfred 1822, Amanda Melvina 1825 (my ggggrandmother md to James Thomas Garrett), Elizabeth 1838, and Rhuama 1828,Thomas 1848, Sarah 1846, and Mary 1850. It is in quetion wether this Squire Angel was a "Thomas" or a "Martin" Squire Angel. A Betty Garrett researched a Martin Angel recorded in two deeds in Carter Co.,TN in 1811. Carter co. partly formed from Washington Co NC in 1796. Because "Sqiure" Angel had a son "Martin," the Martin of Carter Co could be our Squire Angel. There is a Thomas Angel that did exist, but he was md to Nancy Elswic 1839. She states there is a possibility that Martin Angel could be our Squire Angel or quetions if there existed two Thomas Angels in TN. I too am searching for clues as to the identity of this Suire Angel of Overton/Fentress Co.,TN
