Stan, I don't know if you have looked at Ancestry.com, I don't have a membership, but you can join if you think it is worth it. Also, FamilySearch.com has a free search engine. I did find several Arney's in counties in Tennessee other than Clay for 1880. I believe Grundy, Lincoln, Johnson were listed, and maybe some more. We are planning a trip to the Dakotas, Wyoming, Colorado, which may take us through Wichita in late June. Have been through there a couple of times and had a business meeting there several years ago. Nice town. Mr. Beaty, Yes, after all, since most of Peter Arney's decendants remained in Tennessee, the present day Arneys in both counties must be related to him in one way or another. So, in answer to your question, yes, if you could that would be great. Then I will try to contact them to see if any of them can give me their family information and together we could back track our families. That is a wonderful idea. Stan, Are you interested in the present day Arney's of Overton and Pickett Counties, or more in your earlier Arney family? I don't research this family, but if you need contacts with Overton-Pickett families I could send you the telephone directory of those listed in the book. Fellow researchers, I'm tracing Arneys in Overton County, TN. Peter Arney was born in 1772, in Tryon (now Lincoln) County, North Carolina. Peter Arney moved (around his 21st birthday) to Wythe County, VA where he married and began his family. Peter Arney moved (around 1800) to Overton County, Tennessee (putting his age around 28 when he arrived in TN). Peter Arney died in August 1845 (in Overton County, TN) at the age of 73. Peter Arney was the son of Jacob Arney and the brother of Christian Arney. Christian Arney was born in 1750, in York County, PA. Jacob Arney died in 1784, in Lincoln County, NC. Christian Arney died in 1834, in Lincoln County, NC. Peter Arney (born in 1772) to Matthew Arney, Sr (born 1818) to William Ervin (born 1841) to Otha Jouett (born 1875) to Stanley Goble (born 1909) to Jerry Kenneth (born 1938) to Stanley Allen (born 1961). The Arneys, from Peter to Jerry Kenneth (my father), stayed in Tennessee, in the Overton and Pickett County area. My grandmother, Bertha Claudine (Melton) Arney still lives in Tennessee as to many of my relatives. Many living in the Byrdstown and Livingston area. I'm researching this particular branch of the Arneys. Tracing Peter back through Wythe County, VA to Lincoln County, NC. Then going further tracing the family from Tryon (now Lincoln) County, NC back to York County, PA. It is believed that they originated in Switzerland, but tracing them has been a bit difficult. Finding Jacob Arney's siblings, parents, and the rest of the Arney family, solving the "Mystery of Jacob Arney" (over 250 years in the making), is my ultimate goal. Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Stan Arney Wichita, KS Stanley Arney Wichita, KS Researching my Arney heritage, looking for definitive tangible proof of each of their existence, so we KNOW the truth and can share it with others. Building a website that will make it easier for those who come after me to find their Arney lineage. --------------------------------- Relax. Yahoo! Mail virus scanning helps detect nasty viruses!

Please join us Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. (PLEASE NOTE TIME CHANGE) at the Edmondson Pike Branch of the Public Library, 5501 Edmondson Pike, Nashville, TN. Our speaker is Dr. Carole Bucy, professor of History at Volunteer State Community College. She will discuss her own experiences exploring her family history and her husband's, locating these families in the broader story of Tennessee and American history, including the Coal Miners Wars in East Tennessee and the Panic of 1893. The title of her talk is: "Historian Becomes a Genealogist: Putting a Face and Feelings on Facts" We look forward to seeing you. ******************************************* This past month I received the following email which I think will be of interest to our members: The Nashville Public Library is pleased to announce the acquisition of HeritageQuest Online, including remote access! Was Tryon County, North Carolina around Winston-Salem? If so, check the Moravian settlement there. They had good genealogical records and the Arneys might be of that group. Just a thought. Gary D. Jannie, Which Winney (Winnie) Holbert is it that married your William Stanon King? I am researching Holberts and have Winnie Holbert b. 1887, married J. C. Selby, b. 1879 d. 1951. However, I have lost Winnie, and don't have further information on her descendants and/or spouse(s). I have that Winnie Holbert, b. 1887 was the daughter of Joel "Joe" Holbert and Mary E. "Betsy" Adkins. I don't have her married to William Staton King, so would be interested to know if we are talking about the same Winnie (the only one I know of). Winnie, I have two Joel Holberts who lived in Pickett or Fentress Counties. There is Joel "Joe" Holbert, b. 1841 who married Mary E. "Betsy" Adkins, b. 1842. Both of them are buried in the Smyrna Church Cemetery, according to my information. I have not seen the gravestones, and don't have the death dates. However, tis could not be the Joel and Betsy that you reference, since they married much earlier and had several children by that time. The did have a son named Joel LaFayette Holbert, b. 1874 and died 1951, married Sarah Sally Manis, b. 1873. She died, and Joel L. married Minnie Belle Nation. Both, Joel LaFayette and Minnie Belle Nation are buried in the Allardt Cemetery, Fentress County TN, along with several of their children, and the children of Joel L. and his first wife. So it looks like the marriage you have in White County TN was not for the Fentress/Pickett County Holberts.
