I am working on the four Langford's who were in Jackson-Overton County TN early on.( 1820-1830. 1.- Stephen (born 1788 S.C.) who we know was Eli's son 1820 Jackson Co TN (Lankford) ( Land deed dated 1814 Jackson Co between Eli sr and this Stephen) 2,-James ( born 1797S.C.), brother to Stephen a and assumed Eli's son. ( born 1797S.C.) 1820 Jackson County TN Lankford)( Land Deed dated 1814 between Stephen and Eli Sr, Josiah and James Langford witness) 3.Rufus Wiley-( born 1800 S.C.) who at this point and time seems to be from Henry Langford lineage. ( DNA results from descendant) 1820 somewhere in Texas as they and a son born 1820 in Texas) He came to Overton County or back to(?) about 1821-22. 4.Then there was John (Jack)( born 1787-88) who served in the War of 1812.. their family tradition says he was the son of a Rev. John Cranston. He married Mary Polly Crane ca 1811-1816 location unknown There was a book written about 1978 that sits in the Overton County public Library that says these four are brothers. ( great research for the era it was written in) That is not a fact, in fact not at all. Now the job is to finish clearing this up completely. We need to know who this John (Jack) family was ( parent sand siblings) and where was he is the 1820 Census? There was also another Langford who served in the War of 1812 who enlisted with this John= who shows in Overton County TN in the 1830 Census. If you look at the birth dates and look at the Will date of Rev. John Langford.. 1796 it is not possible for him to have been the father of James born 1797 or of Rufus Wiley born 1800. The Rev. J.J. langford named Campbell town as the community (in Goergia?) where his grandfather John ,Langford, Jr. lived. In those early days there was a Campbellton (not Campbelltown) in South Carolina just above Augusta, Ga. This would indicate John Langford, Jr. lived on the Georgia side of the Savannah River. Of interest--there was, in 1770, a Campbellton in Anson County, North Carolina. At least two Langfords, James and William, are named as signers of petitions there between 1770-1789. The Will of John Langford c.1728-l796 Copied from the Original The will of the above John Langford as given on page seven of this book (a reprint of the first edition) is, in part, in error. The son named as Jacob in that will should have been recorded as Joab. John Langford appears not to have had a son named Jacob. See comments on Jacob and Joab pages 9 to 11, this book. The source of the above version of the will was from the files of the South Carolina State Archives, labeled reference, Newberry County Wills (W.P.A.) Vol. 1, Bk A, page 147. It appears that the W.P.A. workers made an error when they prepared the typewritten copy. They used the name Jacob, when the name should have been Joab. After this writer published the above W.P.A. version of the will in 1977 Mrs. Fletcher Derrick, the former Lois Langford obtained xeroxed copies of both the original hand written will and the original Inventory of Estate. These were among loose papers, probate office, Newberry County. The Inventory of Estate was signed by John Langford's Executrix Winefred Langford (his wife) and Executor William Langford (a son). Mrs. Derrick made available to this writer xeroxed copies of both of the above named documents. The will has been copied word for word and line for line as in the original will and is attached. Spelling has been followed as in the original. John Langford - Baptist Minister Cloud Creek Baptist Church - 1790 Evidence at hand strongly indicates John Langford, c.1728-l796 was a Baptist Minister. A book entitled "South Carolina Baptists," pages 169-170 mentions Cloud Creek Baptist Church, later called West Creek Baptist Church. It names Rev. John Langford as minister in 1790. It also mentions that in 1791, Rev. John Langford was in the congregation but not preaching. We mention the age and health of John Langford c.1728-l796 of- Buffalo Creek, whose home appears to have been close by this church. This writer has estimated his birth as c.1728. Others have suggested it may have been 1725 or even five or more years earlier. This would indicate an age of from 62 to 65 years or more. The above John Langford made a will in 1791 saying he was sick and weak in body. This indicates his health was such that he could no longer preach, even though he lived some five years more. Cloud Creek Baptist Church was in old Edgefield County, now Saluda County. Its exact location has not been identified by this writer. Old maps (cont'd page 131) 131 of Edgefield County (1817) and Newberry County (1820) indicate that the area in which John Langford lived on Buffalo Creek, Newberry County was relatively close to the Cloud Creek in Edgefield County. The distance was probably within ten miles, but on opposite sides of the Saluda River. John Langford died in 1796 and the "Inventory of his Estate" indicates he may have preached. Listed in the Estate were his Bible, his Testament, his hymn book and his Practice of Piety. Mrs. Coleman Jeffcoat, the former Maude Langford of Lexington, S.C. whose mother was a member of the West Creek Baptist Church, was contacted for possible historic information. She stated, she had been unable to uncover local history on the Cloud Creek Church but sent some information about the West Creek Church. She mentioned that her sister Claudia Rebecca Langford Boatwright who died in September 1941 and her father Harry Lee Langford, who died in March 1957, had first been buried in that churchyard, but later their bodies were moved to the Batesburg Cemetery where her sister Virginia Langford Clements had been buried in 1971. She also sent information from a publication prepared in 1970 about Saluda County by the Saluda County Tri-centennial Commission. That publication entitled "Saluda County in Scene and Story" mentioned the Cloud Creek Church and briefly discussed the West Creek Church as follows. "The details surrounding the early days of the West Creek Baptist Church are obscure, except for the fact that the church was organized in 1790 by the Nathan Norris family. At that time a building for the purpose of worship was erected near Cloud's Creek and the church was first known as the Cloud's Creek Baptist Church. Later, a new building was erected on the site now known as "Crouch's Dairy." At this time the name of the body was changed from Cloud's Creek Baptist Church to West Creek Baptist Church. In the year 1882, after several families had separated themselves from the body to constitute the Batesburg Baptist Church, property was procured and a building was erected on the site where the church now stands. "As the church grew in numbers, Sunday School rooms were added. As needs for space continued to press, in 1952 a complete educational plant was constructed, and the auditorium (which is the original building on this site) vas enlarged and brick veneered." .Calk Family William and James Calk We mention Calk family because William Calk was the second husband of _cy Pressnel Langford, the mother of Asa and James Langford. It was the :wuse of William Calk in which the two above mentioned Langford boys grew up after their father's death. The two Calk men in the community were William (c.l756-l832) and James Calk (c.1754-l824) who came from the low country of South Carolina to the up country during the Revolutionary War. Both were ardent patriots and members of Capt. Philemon Waters Company Mounted Rifles during the Revolution. William was a sargeant and James a private. Accounts describe both as brave men but their behavior and personality habits have been indicated as opposite.
