    3. Hi List, With your permission I would like to discuss genealogy software. For a number of years now I have been using FTM "Family Tree Maker" and until lately I have reasonably satisfied with it, but recently I have been considering trying some of the other genealogy software on the market. I would most appreciative for some of the pros & cons on some of the other programs out there. * Joey S Crabtree Sterling Heights, MI joeycrabtree@comcast.net

    3. Joey, I highly recommend The Master Genealogist. I am a professional genealogist and this is the best program available. Data entry is a little confusing to people at first but believe me you can catch on quickly. You will be prompted to document every bit of information you enter (this is good!) It creates a master source list which you can choose from or add to as you go along. This feature creates your documentation which is so vital. Another useful feature is that you can add "tasks" to individuals (things you want to do next regarding this person). You can then print your tasks list for your next research trip, internet search, or whatever. You can print the list for one individual or several. There are so many great features that I can't describe them all, but if you have any questions just send me a message. You can visit my Wright Families of Overton Co, Tennessee website and see how detailed your information can be. The URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nataletne/Overton/index.htm Now this website was created by another software, Second Site, which takes the data directly from The Master Genealogist and create the website, but look at the entries and you can get an idea of what you can do. There is a mailing list on rootsweb and strong support from not only the creator of the program but from longtime users. I really think you would be pleased with it. 3. I haven't had much experience with many genealogy software programs except FTM, but I have been impressed with it. The newer versions are greatly improved. Family Tree Maker 2006 really does well when you want to convert it to a book. You can add pictures, index, genealogy reports all into a book. Each section will be added to a table of contents in the front of the book. And most impressive, it will create an index and list all of the names and the page or pages they are in the report, no matter how many sections you create. That book can be exported to a abode file (pdf file) and carried to a publisher to print. So at any time you have the capability of producing a book on any family that is in the book without any additional effort than entering the information into Family Tree Maker initially. So no matter how many families you have in your tree you can create a book on just one family. I create a list from my family tree maker of all the people that I have in the FTM and carry it with me when I am searching for my ancestors. (A portable PC would be nice) Recently when I went to a cemetery I printed out all my ancestors that were suppose to be at that cemetery. So as you can see, I think FTM is a good tool. If you have an older version you may want to consider updating it. I have over 22,000 names in my FTM and it keeps rolling along. It creates a backup every time you close it and various times during input. But it still resides on your hard drive, so it is good to backup often. -------Original Message------- From: Joey Crabtree Date: 02/15/07 08:48:55 To: CRABTREE-L@rootsweb.com; tnfentre@rootsweb.com; tnoverto@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNOVERTO] genealogy software Hi List, With your permission I would like to discuss genealogy software.
