    3. There's a Mary West 50 living with her son James 20 In 1850. A good guess that it is his widowed wife and son?

    3. Kevin-- Thanks for your reply. Here's my story. According to a son of James West, J.C. West, interview given in the early 1900's, his father James was married twice. He had five children by the first wife (wife or children's names were not mentioned, only that they grew up in TN). His second wife who was also married twice had five children from her first marriage, and then she and James married and had five children of their own, one being J.C. West. James Sr. is found in the 1850 MS census with the second wife and several of the children from her first marriage and then their own children. Based on the age of James from census records, he was born abt. 1796-1798 in NC, but grew up in TN according to his son. Unless he was listed under another head of household, the James West in Overton has not been accounted for or linked to the other West listed in the Overton census. I feel very strongly that because no member of the Isaac West family can claim this James West in Overton 1820, that is my James West. His age would have been perfect to have a wife and one child. And, I believe it is possible that he is related to Isaac West family somehow. 1820 Overton Co. TN James West 19-26 (born 1794-1799) 1 female 0-10 (1st daughter-born 1810-1820) 1 female 26-45 (wife-born 1775-1794) I believe that he was next located in Wayne Co. TN by 1830 and by 1840 he was in MS. What happened to this first wife and children by this marriage is a mystery. It makes things especially hard since I have no names to work with, and of course marriage records from that error are vertually non-existant. If his first child was born by 1820 and the other four was born within a year or two of the other ones, they would have been grown by 1850 when he married just a few year before and started a new family. 1830 Wayne Co. MS James West age 30-40 born 1790-1800 1 M 0-5 born 1826-1830 2 F 5-10 born 1820-1825 1 F 10-15 born 1815-1820 1 F 40-50 born 1780-1790 1840 Lafayette Co. MS James West age 40-50 born 1790-1800 2 males 10-15 born 1825-1830 2 females 15-20 born 1820-1825 1 female 20-30 born 1810-1820 1 female 50-60 born 1780-1790 I suspect that his first wife died between 1840-1848. Looking at all the census, it is consistant and the wife appears to have been older. By 1848 he married his second wife. The only clue other than census records comes from a great-great grandson who has James father listed as Jacob. I suspect he got this name from J. C. West, who both are now deceased. Perhaps this report will spark a flame with someone who recognizes something. If anyone has information on James West from 1820 I would really appreciate any clues. 3. This Mary should be the widow of Isaac West. He died in 1836 and this Mary died in 1863. I have been to their graves. I have also been to the grave of the son, James West. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kevin Poore <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 24, 2003 2:19 PM Subject: [TNOVERTO] In re Wests in Overton > There's a Mary West 50 living with her son James 20 In 1850.
