    3. Also, TB was a big killer of veterans, during and after the war. My great great grandfather's pension file describes his illness, and I am pretty sure that he died of TB. He died in 1867, but had been ill since before he was let out of the service.     3. It was truly amazing how few men could take care of themselves when the war started. The army did not help when cooks were provided. There were no sanitary codes and the men simply either poisoned themselves with human wastes or strained themselves with poor quality cooking. Either way dysentery and piles were the most common ailment of the veterans after the war. Gary D.
