Some of the Mulkey family came over the mountain and settled in the Watauga Settlement area. Jonathan Mulkey was a minister in the Sinking Springs Baptist Association in NC. He followed Tidus Lane as minister of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church at Gray, Washington County, TN. He is buried there. His descendants and other relatives migrated to middle TN, Kentucky, and later Missouri. In the late 1840s and early 1850's they traveled over the Oregon Trail and settled in Benton County and other places in Oregon. Of course some of the family remained in the east. I am not a Mulkey descendant but I cross paths with the family every where I turn in my research. At one point a distant cousin did marry a Mulkey while living in Missouri before they went to Oregon.
