    3. Some left after the Civil War to settle in the Civil War and avoid Union authorities in Tennessee. These were the Confederates. Others left around 1889 to get the free land in the Oklahoma Territory land rush. A family can only divide its land so many generations before it runs out and the next generation has to leave. That is the case with most Tennesseans leaving for the promise lands. Gary D. 3. Gary It might be added that the a lot of the area around Overton, Jackson, Putnam, etc was probably devastated by the Union armies and their sympathizers. It was probably difficult to sustain a living. I can remember one my elementary school teachers in Cookeville [who incidently also taught my mother] relating stories of the hardships resulting from "Mr Lincoln's War". This was in the mid-1940's. I am sure that she had heard the stories from those who experienced them and stayed. I have researched other relatives of my ancestors who went first to Arkansas, then to Oklahoma, as you said probably of the opportunities there. Dave Masters
