    1. Re: [TNOVERTO] John Brown

    3. Vicky, John Brown and Judea Stout married in the late 1840's. They had about 6 children before John left Judy for Mahala Carr around 1860. Mahala and John were supposed to have moved "up North". John and Mahala had one son, Frank. Frank is buried at Old Union Cemetery and I think Mahala is buried either beside him or at his feet. John Brown came back to stay with his children in the Alpine area when he was an old man. He was homeless and filthy. Whomever he stayed with, he left them with body lice. John Brown was sitting on the porch listing to a Tom Norris play a fiddle when John died of what was probably a stroke. He was buried in the John Vaughn Cemetery at Brown's Chapel. His grave was not marked. Years later two of my uncles were told to go to the John Vaughn Cemetery and dig a grave for Judea Brown in 1913. They dug into a coffin in an unexpected grave. After checking around the community, it was decided that the boys dug into their grandpa's grave. They hurriedly filled the grave back in and buried Judea Stout Brown in another spot. To this day the grave of John Brown is still unmarked. I guess his body is truly "moldering in the grave"! Gary D.
