    1. Re: [TNOVERTO] Overton County Records
    2. Helen - Great story - thanks for sharing. My biggest problem is that I have severe allergies and the thing I'm most allergic to is - mold. And old books are full of that. So when I'm working with the old books I must take frequent breaks and blow my nose a lot. The biggest problem with searching in the old records is that you don't know exactly where to look. You know someone died about 1850, but his estate may not have been settled for 50+ years later so you must look in the indexes of all the books. Speaking of which, does anyone have the will of Lewis Stover, Sr.? I never found the will, but I found the court case between the brothers over his land, and in that case it says my 2Grgrandfather James Stover filed a will with the court. So near and yet so far...... Thanks. Louanne ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    2. Louanne, Your experience reminds me of one I had. One hot summer day, long ago I decided to go to the Morgan Co, TN courthouse to do some research. The folks there were very helpful and showed me where the books were that I needed to start with. But it was summer, with no air conditioning. And no index at all in the book I was using. On a page very near the end I finally found what I was looking for and I was as hot and sticky as I have ever been. Helen ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    1. [TNOVERTO] Overton County Records
    2. It typically isn't as simple as looking in a will book. So many didn't have wills or the wills were lost. What we do have lots of in Overton County is court minutes and deeds. When I was in Livingston in October I spent some time at the Registrar of Deeds office looking for proof of the father of Creed Garrett, my ancestor (supposedly Joshua, but I've seen no proof). I was looking for Elijah, Joshua & Creed. I found court minutes in a case where the defendant was indexed as "Joshua Garrett's Heirs", so I was hoping that would have my answer. Unfortunately, it was Creed's brother Joshua, BUT for anyone researching that line it would be very helpful - gives his year of death, name of his wife and children, most of whom were minors. Researching in the old documents is tedious. This particular document was not in the book and page listed in the Index, which meant I had to go through that entire book and then another to find it. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. Hello, I just know I have found a few records that were in town courthouses when the other courthouses have burnt. I was told in the 1800s almost all towns had there own courthouse then there became county ones then state ones and the county lines change and some towns just became part of the bigger ones as county lines changed and when this did happen old marraige, birth, divorces, wills and such were not taken it was really land records war records and such that were moved to the main courhouse. That was why I was asking about Oveton as I live in CA. am never going to be able to come there I was wanting to know if anyone knew about Overton.I have been looking for my gg-grandmother for many years. 3. > I have been unable to find much info of my grandfather Andy Horner. I know he was born abt 1865 probably in Overton Co. He is shown in the 1880 census but not able to find in 1870. He married my grdmother Rosa Bruton in 1888 ,Marriage records are in Livingston record books. They had 4 children all born in disrict 3 "Hilham", Andy died of fever in 1895. I was told by my mother that his father was Spencer Marion "Mape" Horner. The 188o census shows Andy 15 yrs old living at John Hamlin Horner, Mapes brothers home, and listed as Nephew.Mape came home from CAS in fall of 1864 and could be Andys father however he and his recorded wife maintaned all their life that they had no kids.Last record I found was 1890 voter list showing A. F. Horner. Pleasant Horner, and John Horner. These last two are Andys uncles and brothers to Mape. Any help or suggestions to find Andy's mother would be appreciated. As a boy my father says they were told they were related to the Bilyues, who lived in the same area. Thanks for any help. Jim Horner

Barbara Yes the courthouse did burn but all records did not and is very miss leading to a lot of people we have original deeds records back to 1806 and other early court records and various county records that survived pre dating 1865 also you just have know what to look for. I have been researching over 30 years now and have helped many people and found records that even professional genealogist have overlooked. You just have to learn from trial and error and it is an advantage to live in the area you are researching in as well. Im specifically looking for info on Jeramiah Gray who may have dies in 1849. I belive he had a son who was born around 1825. Any info on any Grays from this time period would be appreciated. I am not a Gray researcher; but I do have access to Ancestry.com. What is particular are you looking for? There is a Jeremiah Gray in the 1840 Overton County census. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
