No as there are more than one, land transaction between Stephen and Eli SRand also with some of the other siblings in that family. Most are in South Carolina a few in southern North Carolina. John Langford and Patsy Duke of Warren County North Carolina are NOT the parents. This John died June 09 1828 in Warren Co NC. He was Married to Martha "Patsy"Duke June 27 1787 in Warren Co N.C. who died at a later date. Their children were According to the Will he left. ( my mistake) two years and volumes of film, books I found his Will. also a early land deed. They never lived in South Carolina, the family had moved down from Landenberg VA. His father was George Langford and mother was Judith. Threw it all in a tote box and started searching again. All was not wasted as about last Dec. I went to share bits of it with the Langford list. Hence a book is forth coming from descendants of that family, the research I had was the pieces they were missing to connect their family. So I do feel great about that! Yep I sent all my notes/research to them! In about another two years, a trip to the TN Archives I found what was my first was the first hint that Eli Sr may be the father.. of James and Stephen. ( James oldest son is named Eli Holman Langford born ca 1818 Jackson Co TN. In fact in the 1820 census James Lankford is listed as head of household, he shows himself, his wife, their young son and Male over 45 years of age living with them.. It is thought it was Eli sr, who certainly passed away shortly there after. he would have been now about 875-80 years of age. Digging deeper and have now for three years and nothing has told me it is otherwise. I can tell you volumes about Eli sr and all his children. James was the youngest. born 1797 As for this John (Jack) Langford I have no idea. While I was on this search trying to find James daddy (our lineage) I did run into a John Langford in Rowan County N.C. he did marry a Martha Whitehead. he shows in the 1790 census and in about 1794, there is a land transaction for them, they sold their land in Rowan County N.C. and I have never located him again. My thoughts are that John (Jack) who turns up in Overton Co 1830 Census is very possible lived in that northwest corner of S.C as he served under Hodges and Nash. with out looking one of the two families owned the post-office/store at Merrittsville S.C. (Greenv ille Co ( the town is no more but is under the lake /town water supply) Not far from this Post Office there also lived a Charley Crane.. could that have been Mary Polly Crane Langford's family? Source: old map of Greenville Co. If so that places this John in Greenville Co., sort of.. Who ever the other Langford is who served with in the same unit as John (jack) died in the War of 1812. I feel sure was related to him. I need to look who it was. ( I will get back to you with that.) Please feel free to ask me questions.. And I will dig out my notes and shrew what other Langford's were in that area in that time period. It would be nice to find something that is solid as to where and who his family was.., is! At least that is my goal. The son named as Jacob in that will should have been recorded as Joab. John Langford appears not to have had a son named Jacob. See comments on Jacob and Joab pages 9 to 11, this book. The source of the above version of the will was from the files of the South Carolina State Archives, labeled reference, Newberry County Wills (W.P.A.) Vol. 1, Bk A, page 147. It appears that the W.P.A. workers made an error when they prepared the typewritten copy. They used the name Jacob, when the name should have been Joab. After this writer published the above W.P.A. version of the will in 1977 Mrs. Fletcher Derrick, the former Lois Langford obtained xeroxed copies of both the original hand written will and the original Inventory of Estate. These were among loose papers, probate office, Newberry County. The Inventory of Estate was signed by John Langford's Executrix Winefred Langford (his wife) and Executor William Langford (a son). Mrs. Derrick made available to this writer xeroxed copies of both of the above named documents. The will has been copied word for word and line for line as in the original will and is attached. Spelling has been followed as in the original. John Langford - Baptist Minister Cloud Creek Baptist Church - 1790 Evidence at hand strongly indicates John Langford, c.1728-l796 was a Baptist Minister. A book entitled "South Carolina Baptists," pages 169-170 mentions Cloud Creek Baptist Church, later called West Creek Baptist Church. It names Rev. John Langford as minister in 1790. It also mentions that in 1791, Rev. John Langford was in the congregation but not preaching. We mention the age and health of John Langford c.1728-l796 of- Buffalo Creek, whose home appears to have been close by this church. This writer has estimated his birth as c.1728. Others have suggested it may have been 1725 or even five or more years earlier. This would indicate an age of from 62 to 65 years or more. The above John Langford made a will in 1791 saying he was sick and weak in body. This indicates his health was such that he could no longer preach, even though he lived some five years more. Cloud Creek Baptist Church was in old Edgefield County, now Saluda County. Its exact location has not been identified by this writer. Old maps (cont'd page 131) 131 of Edgefield County (1817) and Newberry County (1820) indicate that the area in which John Langford lived on Buffalo Creek, Newberry County was relatively close to the Cloud Creek in Edgefield County. The distance was probably within ten miles, but on opposite sides of the Saluda River. John Langford died in 1796 and the "Inventory of his Estate" indicates he may have preached. Listed in the Estate were his Bible, his Testament, his hymn book and his Practice of Piety. Mrs. Coleman Jeffcoat, the former Maude Langford of Lexington, S.C. whose mother was a member of the West Creek Baptist Church, was contacted for possible historic information. She stated, she had been unable to uncover local history on the Cloud Creek Church but sent some information about the West Creek Church. She mentioned that her sister Claudia Rebecca Langford Boatwright who died in September 1941 and her father Harry Lee Langford, who died in March 1957, had first been buried in that churchyard, but later their bodies were moved to the Batesburg Cemetery where her sister Virginia Langford Clements had been buried in 1971. She also sent information from a publication prepared in 1970 about Saluda County by the Saluda County Tri-centennial Commission. That publication entitled "Saluda County in Scene and Story" mentioned the Cloud Creek Church and briefly discussed the West Creek Church as follows. "The details surrounding the early days of the West Creek Baptist Church are obscure, except for the fact that the church was organized in 1790 by the Nathan Norris family. At that time a building for the purpose of worship was erected near Cloud's Creek and the church was first known as the Cloud's Creek Baptist Church. Later, a new building was erected on the site now known as "Crouch's Dairy." At this time the name of the body was changed from Cloud's Creek Baptist Church to West Creek Baptist Church. In the year 1882, after several families had separated themselves from the body to constitute the Batesburg Baptist Church, property was procured and a building was erected on the site where the church now stands. "As the church grew in numbers, Sunday School rooms were added. As needs for space continued to press, in 1952 a complete educational plant was constructed, and the auditorium (which is the original building on this site) vas enlarged and brick veneered." .Calk Family William and James Calk We mention Calk family because William Calk was the second husband of _cy Pressnel Langford, the mother of Asa and James Langford. It was the :wuse of William Calk in which the two above mentioned Langford boys grew up after their father's death. The two Calk men in the community were William (c.l756-l832) and James Calk (c.1754-l824) who came from the low country of South Carolina to the up country during the Revolutionary War. Both were ardent patriots and members of Capt. Philemon Waters Company Mounted Rifles during the Revolution. William was a sargeant and James a private. Accounts describe both as brave men but their behavior and personality habits have been indicated as opposite.

! will have to go back and check on the names of their children. there were 11-12 of them who were all named when the estate was settled. The mom lived out her life with one of their children.. Can you tell it has been a while since I worked on this line lineage? Josiah B. and Mahulda were married in the home of her father. I think they had actually getting ready for the trip to MO when her father died, hence the Monroe Co Census. Some of her Smith family also moved to MO. Dade County ( Springfield area) and went back and forth between TN and MO. I also know some one in that Smith family was a Methodist preacher circuit rider ministry. in Miss. ( I could be wrong that it was Methodist, but that is how I recall it right now.) If any one wants that data let me know and I will dig it out. and give tot you with the sources: Rose C I just never could figure out where William Smith parents were. The Holman & Pinchbeck families came from Rowan County NO.C. ca 1810 to middle TN. several brothers who had married sisters (Pinchbeck) I even searched there but could not see anything that connected this Wm to them. Any ideas? In the earlier census for Overton/ Jackson county there are several Smith families. I have no idea if there is a family connection or not.
