    3. Michele, We have one Austin that married into the family of William Wolford McDonald. His name was Henry and he would have been born in the 1880s as he married a woman who was born in 1889. Any chance that he shows up somewhere in yours? Sorry I could offer no more help. R. 3. There were Austins who lived at a place called Hickory Flat. The Austin Cemetery is there today. However, there are no marked Austin graves there. I have heard my kin folks talk of Aunt Mary Austin. I think the oldest Austin in the area was a widow who raised two or three girls. Ruhama Austin married a Stout in my family. I never got to know this family very well in my researching because the marriages always seemed to end in an early death of the men. (No pun intended!) Also, all the children tended to be girls. I know people have brick walls and with so much information and documents I felt it was worth putting out there. I never ment to cause any snide remarks on this or any list as I am very greatful to him and all the others that have so much and are so willing to share with me and others. I sure wish I could have connected to those on his site. Sometimes we may not like who or how the information comes to us but as I think we are all just so very greatful to people like James and all the others that share and help us all. I guess when I replied to James it didn't sound like that and that is my fault. Please if you have any remarks please send them to me and not the list. I do try very hard not to let anything people say or do become personal and try to remember why I started research and who much fun and joy it has brought to me and to always be greatful for any and all help that comes my way no matter how it comes. If I my e-mail upset anyone in anyway the I am really sorry, as it was sent for information as not to long ago this list was about people posting wrong information and this e-mail gave us a good bit of informaiton on that as well. We can see we as researchers need to be kinder to other researchers. The link to James site is on the bottom of the page on the first e-mail. Barbara [email protected]

    1. [TNOVERTO] Request for Overton County MAINORD info
    2. Guille Tuttle
    3. We have been working on a genealogical book about the MAINARD, MAINORD, MAYNARD, MAYNORD, MANORD, MAINYARD, ( among other spellings ) of Overton County. We have mostly concentrated on descendants of William Mainord ( 1740-1880, North Carolina ). There are some Mainords ( the spelling that I will use for all of the above for this letter ) that we have not been able to connect due to incomplete information or nicknames used. We believe that we have sorted everyone and have placed him or her in the proper family branch. We used the spelling of the name found on their headstones. We used census records ( up to 1920 ), marriage records, death records, cemetery records, and information submitted to us by other researchers. We have tried to verify and document all information used. Credit will be given to those who have submitted their data and sources. At the moment we are working on veterans of the Civil War and tying in last minute lines. We are planning to publish summer of 2004. We are inviting any Mainord descendant of William Mainord ( 1740-1880, NC ) with information to contribute to contact us. I connect to the William Mainord line through his son Silas and daughter Nancy Jane Mainord. THANKS GUILLE TUTTLE Email: [email protected]

    3. TB is still an active disease today. It is often treatable, however newer strains are popping up and immediate treatment is necessary. Some professions screen for TB others do not. In the early days, unpastorized milk was one of the biggest ways of transmission. An almost silent killer. X-ray machines were transported across the State of TN by the Tennessee Department of Public Health in a specially equipped bus until just a few years ago. Now the new scratch test is used. Note: After World War I, many returning medics were given permission by the State of Tennessee as Department of Public Health Doctors. This helped rebuild the medical personal shortage. Their primary purpose was to set up screening for contagious disease including TB. They also gave immunization shots, and preschool screening. These men provided a very needed service during and after World War II when medical personal were on the front. Today the public health professionals must be qualified like other health care professionals. 3. It was truly amazing how few men could take care of themselves when the war started. The army did not help when cooks were provided. There were no sanitary codes and the men simply either poisoned themselves with human wastes or strained themselves with poor quality cooking. Either way dysentery and piles were the most common ailment of the veterans after the war. Gary D. 2. Your right here..And in some cases a person was put in an institution where they were sometimes buried in a cemetery without a marker..This happened to an ancestor of mine. 3. Also, TB was a big killer of veterans, during and after the war. My great great grandfather's pension file describes his illness, and I am pretty sure that he died of TB. He died in 1867, but had been ill since before he was let out of the service. 3. Add 4. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome 5. Depression to your list. They saw terrible sites during and after battle. Their homes had been ravaged. General Blackburn did not spare anyone in Overton County or the surrounding area. He took every horse, food item, blanket, etc. for his men. He even took every male over 10 years, he could find at any home to increase the unit. Henry Verble had a conch shell that had come with his family from Holland. He used it as a horn to call his cattle, family, and to sound alarm, etc. During the Civil War his daughter Clemetine Verbel Walker had the conk shell. The shell had the pointed tip cut off so air could be blown through it. It had a large pale pink ruffled rim on the top of the shell which allowed the sound to be carried long distance. Clementine's family tried to remain neutral during the war. General Blackburn would raid the farms. When she would hear them coming she would blow the horn into the hollow where the men were working and then hid the horn. After several unsuccessful attempts to find the horn. He was able to sneak up and the horn was found. He ordered his men to take an ax and break the horn up. After they began hacking away, he rode off. The horn was very hard and after breaking only the beautiful pink ruffled rim on top, the men stopped and followed their General. The horn still worked but its beauty had been marred. When I saw the horn is was a pale gray shell, and still made the sound of a horn. Maybe not as pretty but just as useful.
