Ron, Is that where "THE" Moses Phillips is buried? There were bunches of Moses, Levis and Johns born through the generations. One of the Moses' was buried way up around Wormingham, near Byrdstown. If that's where "THE" Moses Phillips is buried, I'd sure like to know. I amresearching the surname of McGee/McGhee/McGehee in Overton Co. Also Fanning and Dennis and McLin surnames.Pat
I was recently in Overton County and decided to go to Moses Phillips grave. My grandfather took me there years ago. The graveyard is about a quarter of a mile north of Harris Chapel on the Livingston - Monterey road. There are about 20 graves there. Some have inscriptions. Others do not. The graveyard sits on top a hill in the middle of a large field. There is a tree at the top of the hill right by the graves. The three tented graves at the uppermost point of the graveyard (in the northeast corner) are Moses Phillips and his two wives. I no longer recall which was his. They are marked with field stones and stone tents, but no inscriptions. Moses Phillips came into southeastern Overton County in the 1820's. It would be a shame to loose track of his burial site. I'm searching for Lourany Greenwood married to Isaac Allison. Isaac was from Smith Co.which is adjacent to Overton Co. They migrated to Tyler Co., Tx. via Lowndes Co. and Winston Counties, Ms. The 1850 census places them in Tyler Co. by at least that date. Could Lourany Greenwood's father have been James Greenwood? Any info would be appreciated. June
You can find the 1860 census for Overton as well as a lot of other Overton data on the below site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnoverto/overton.htm
Once again, could someone please post the 1860 census of all the Smiths of Overton Co. I checked the 1860 Fentress census and could not locate a Martha Jane Smith b. 1835. She is with William Gunter by 1870 in Fentress, so I'm checking the previous 1860 census for Overton and Fentress. Thanks JW Garrett

HELP! I am searching for information on Elizabeth Williams, born about 1814-1816 in Marshall Co. Tennessee. She was the first wife of Jerimiah W. Hendrix (his 2nd wife was Martha A. Lincoln). Elizabeth and Jerimiah had 6 children; twins Thomas N. and William J., Mary, twins Francis M. and George W., and Isabelle. (Thomas N. was my great-great Grandfather). I am looking for information on Elizabeth's parents and ancestors. She died in 1855, shortly after Isabelle was born. My Great Grandmother's memoirs state that Elizabeth was a Cherokee Indian, but I come up empty-handed everywhere I look for documentation on her existence and lineage. THANKS! One possibility might be that the Mary Garrett in the 1880 census could be the Polly in the earlier census. Polly was a common nickname for Mary in those days. Rex Phillips- Dallas
Thank you Wanda for the info!!!!! Vey much appreciated. As you know I am trying to find the parents of Martha Jane Smith b. 1835 TN, 1srt wife of William Gunter. I thought I had found her parents on the 1850 Overton Co. census as Daniel & Sarah Smith with Martha b. 1835. Then later I found out this family, including Martha, is in White Co.,TN 1860 census. Only way it could be this Martha is if she moved to Fentress Co. before 1864 as she had children with William by 1865. This is probably unlikely. So now im wondering if there is a connection with her and George W. Smith b. 1821 since his daugher also was a wife of William Gunter. JW Garrett

Wanda, I have a copy of the book. The George W. Smith I am researching b. 1821 is unidentified in the book. He md Judith Garrett. I am trying to connect him with Martha Jane Smith b. 1835, 1st wife of William Gunter. George Smiths daughter, Margaret, was Williams 2nd wife. So, I'm wondering if Martha Jane and Margaret were related. And if so, how? I am trying to find Martha Janes parents. JW Garrett

You need the book Smith-Garrett and Allied Families of Overton, Fentress and Pickett Counties, Tennessee by Oma Ivadell Smith. It has lots of wonderful details of the George Smith, Sr. (1760-1839) and George Smith, Jr. (ca 1800-1844) families and their allies. I highly recommend it. I looked on the Overton County Web Page and sent a request to Richard Pierce, email [email protected] -- the book is $60 as I recall. If you only need a name or two I will be happy to look it up for you. Wanda Gant _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8.
