Helen, Boy, you sure know how to open a can of worms. I have Beatty Phillips as the son of William Phillips Sr. William Sr lived up near Wirmingham. There is no proof that Old Mose was a son of William Phillips Sr. However, the same surnames run through both families (both had sons named Reuben, Thomas, William). William Sr was the son of Reuben and had brothers named Levi and Jonas, Moses used both names. They both came From Rowan County about the same time. and both ended up in Overton County. And Moses was the right age to be one of William Phillips Sr. sons. Lots of amateur genealogists believe they are kin. I do too. But I cant prove it. I welcome any discussion on this point. When the McGee's moved to Livingston they ran the Livingston Enterprise. One daughter, Callis McGee, was a basketball star at Livingston Academy in the 1930's. She played some college basketball and made a teacher. I think she married a Fivash from Kentucky. She is buried in Memorial Gardens or Good Hope in Livingston. Some of the other McGee's moved to Cookeville as I recall. I think they ran a newspaper there. Gary D. Betty, Yep, that is the right Moses. You are right about Moses' land. He had a lot of land. Unfortunately, most of it was vertical. Hard to farm on the sides of a mountain. I still own some of his original farm that was passed from son to son. The name Laborn is seen spelled a variety of ways. It appears to originate as Laban in the bible, since Moses seemed to use the good book as a source for names for his many children, but I suspect a hill-country North Carolina accent would turn it in to Laborn. In any case, to get to Columbia Hill from Monterey requires driving on a ridge called Laborn's Backbone. On both sides of the back bone was Moses Phillips land. Fortunately, Laborn is a rare name, so searching for him on-line helps me find my Moses Phillips line quickly. I'd love to hear the story of how John Calvin Brown was really a Phillips. I have a similar situation on my mother's side. You can email me direct if you'd prefer at [email protected] BTW, my grandfather once said that the Sisco's were indian. Have you ever heard that? Finally, I remember the following from when I was a child. Moses did have a second wife but I heard her name was Linda. Ely was their only child. Supposedly Linda was Cherokee. I could be wrong. Thanks for posting Moses' & Levi's will. Note: This not OLD Mose or Black Mose. Rather it is two brothers who lived together and never married. We need more of this kind of documentation. There are names in here that may solve other researcher's mysteries. For those of us who don't have the opportunity to go search the original documents, this could be a Godsend. Ron Phillips.
Ron, Wish more folks would report their knowledge of "missing" graves and/or locations of cemeteries out in the woods and fields. I'm not related to those folks but thought you were nice to share that information. Barbara W

Dale, I am also related thru Jasper on my grandmother's side. Moses produced a large crop. When I am very tired, I enjoy listening to tapes of my grandfather Elvin talking about the family. It takes me home to the hills and I can smell woodburning stoves, bacon and coffee, and hear June bugs whirring. Sigh. In a message about the Moses Phillips grave it mentioned three "tented graves". I assume this refers to a tent shape concrete type cover over the grave. I have noticed several graves with this type of covering in the Overton County area including my great-great grandparents Andrew Jackson Walker and his wife Clementine Verbel Walker. Does anyone know the significance of the "tented" covering? Dale, I know the one you want, but I cannot say I ever found his grave. I found some of the old Phillips out past the old Hanging Limb School. Others were in the hollow to the south of Wilson Elementary. Moses is truly as old as the real Moses as I remember. Gary D. Betty, While I was there I took pictures of the graves. Unfortunately, while I was there, my son installed a newer operating system on my computer so I can no longer use my scanner. Dale, Yes, that is THE Moses Phillips. My grandfather was Elvin C. Phillips of Columbia Hill. He was born in 1899 and had a phenomenal memory. He was the family historian and could point out all the cabin sites and graves of the family members. He is the one who got me started in genealogy. He love to tell stories about family members. Every time we drove to Monterey from Columbia Hill, he'd stop and tell us about Bear Rock where Moses Phillips killed the bear when he first entered Overton County. He told me that Moses Phillips grave was one of the two graves with the tent stones still intact. Alas, all are now broken. He called THE Moses Phillips, "Old Mose". I also descended from old Mose's grandson Moses Phillips. (son of George Phillips). This one he called "Black Mose" because he had a swarthy complexion. Black Mose rode with the Alvin and Moses Phillips Gang during the Civil War. But that's another story.
