    1. [TNOVERTO] Benjamin Brown/Sarah Sevier Family
    2. Bob Brown
    3. I am researching the family of Benjamin and Sarah Sevier Brown in Overton County ca 1815-1840. Deeds to their land refer to "Obeds River". I am assuming that what is now "Obey River" is the same watercourse. If my assumption is correct can anyone tell me when and why the name was changed? If my assumption is not correct can anyone tell me the presnt name of what was "Obeds River"? The "Obed River" in the present counties of Cumberland and Morgan is apparantly a different stream altogether Thanks in advance to whoever can help me with this!.

    3. It is the Obey River. Many of the Browns lived and died in the Dale Hollow Lake Pool area which was formed by the Obey and Wolf Rivers. People still use the incorrect name today because they are so closely related. I think the Obey River was named in honor of an early explorer. Many early settlers referred to the river as Obey's River. The explorer may have been Obey Terrell if I remember correctly. The Obed River of Cumberland and Morgan Counties was named in honor of Chief Obed. That particular river flows eastward into the Tennessee River system while the Obey flows westward into the Cumberland River system. Gary D. 3. Those Hayters lived at what is now Alpine. The John Vaughn Cemetery was once called the Hayter Cemetery. Their farm was from Highway 52 to the top of the mountain to the south. There are a lot of old blank stone in that cemetery. Gary D. 3. Vickie, The children of John Brown and Judea Stout were: Louisa born about 1846. I know very little about this child. Susan Ann "Susann" born September 1, 1849. Albert Center "Center" born April 5, 1850. Simeon Eli "Sim" born November 1, 1852. Mary Ann "Pop" born December 23, 1852. Payton "Pate" born about 1854. William Harding "Billy" born about 1855. Please note that some of the birth dates were impossible. The dates were taken from their tombstones, but the dates had to be wrong for Simeon Eli and Mary Ann. Likewise, Susan Ann and Albert Center couldn't have been born that close to one another either. Payton and William Harding went to Seattle to live. They are buried there. Mahala Carr was buried at either beside Frank Brown or at the foot of his grave. The stone is not inscribed. This was told to me by a child of Frank some years ago. John Brown must have abandoned Mahala and Frank also because he was really alone with he died at Alpine. I hope this helps. Gary D. 3. Yes, that is the one. There is one tree at the top of the small hill and Moses and his wives are buried nearby. 3. Ron, Is the cemetery where Old Mose buried, the one on the opposite side of the road as Harris Chapel Cemetery? If so I know where it is. This small cemetery was covered in weeds, trees and vines until the last couple years when someone cut down the trees from it and cleared it of nicely. But, I still haven't took the time to stop and look at who might be there. Bobbie Ron <[email protected]> wrote: I was recently in Overton County and decided to go to Moses Phillips grave. My grandfather took me there years ago. The graveyard is about a quarter of a mile north of Harris Chapel on the Livingston - Monterey road. There are about 20 graves there. Some have inscriptions. Others do not. The graveyard sits on top a hill in the middle of a large field. There is a tree at the top of the hill right by the graves. The three tented graves at the uppermost point of the graveyard (in the northeast corner) are Moses Phillips and his two wives. I no longer recall which was his. They are marked with field stones and stone tents, but no inscriptions. Moses Phillips came into southeastern Overton County in the 1820's. It would be a shame to loose track of his burial site. 2. Gary, Thank you so much. Frank Brown was my husbands great grandfather. The family thinks that John Brown and Mahaly were never married. I found Mahaly Brown on the 1860 census with Lorenzo and Frank but no John. In fact I haven't found John Brown on any census in Overton Co. Can you give me the names of John and Judea Browns children? I found in one of the Roll Call books that Frank was half brother to Simeon. I have been to Old Union where Frank was buried and did not find Mahaly's grave. Any clues on the parents of John Brown? Thanking you again for your help. 3. Vicky, John Brown and Judea Stout married in the late 1840's. They had about 6 children before John left Judy for Mahala Carr around 1860. Mahala and John were supposed to have moved "up North". John and Mahala had one son, Frank. Frank is buried at Old Union Cemetery and I think Mahala is buried either beside him or at his feet. John Brown came back to stay with his children in the Alpine area when he was an old man. He was homeless and filthy. Whomever he stayed with, he left them with body lice. John Brown was sitting on the porch listing to a Tom Norris play a fiddle when John died of what was probably a stroke. He was buried in the John Vaughn Cemetery at Brown's Chapel. His grave was not marked. Years later two of my uncles were told to go to the John Vaughn Cemetery and dig a grave for Judea Brown in 1913. They dug into a coffin in an unexpected grave. After checking around the community, it was decided that the boys dug into their grandpa's grave. They hurriedly filled the grave back in and buried Judea Stout Brown in another spot. To this day the grave of John Brown is still unmarked. I guess his body is truly "moldering in the grave"! Gary D. 3. My 2nd ggrandfather is John S. Brown. He and his wife Ann were living in Overton County When my ggrandfather, Austin Curtis Brown, was born on 5 Aug 1820. My John S. Brown and his brother Jacob Brown were in Caldwell County, KY, by 1825 where they appear on a tax list. Jacob was dead by 1828 as John S. was administrator of his estate. The only John S. Brown I find in the 1820 Overton County census is listed next to Sarah S.(Sevier?) Brown. Sarah was the widow of Judge Benjamin Brown and their children include a John S. Brown and a Jacob Brown. I feel that my John S. Brown and the John S. Brown, son of Benjamin and Sarah, are the same person but have found no direct evidence. Can anyone help me? Bob Brown

    3. I am also enjoying the discussion about Overton folks. Presently, I am researching Hughes, Adams, and Thurman's from Overton & Clay County. Specifically, I am interested in finding out how to confirm burial sites in the Fiske Cemetary, outside of Hilham. I have located my Great Grandfather Blue C. Adams there. And am told that My GG Grandfather Joseph Leander and his wife are also buried there. But the stones are weathered and illegible. Suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. She married Hiram Stover. One of their children is my husbands greatgrandmother, Sarah Amanda Sells who was married to David Leander Sells.
